The two dates correspond to those of the Gregorian calendar for Russia and the Julian calendar for France. The imperial couple's visit to France in 1896 was a continuation of the Franco-Russian alliance ratified in 1893 by Alexander III, father of Nicholas II. The event was spectacularly organized, with a publicity campaign in the press contributing to the popular enthusiasm. Symbolic acts were multiplied, such as the laying of the first stone of the Alexander III Bridge, which spans the Seine. A few months later, Félix Faure went to Russia. He docked at Kronstadt on August 23, 1897 and stayed at the Peterhof Palace, near St Petersburg, where a grand dinner was served on August 25 in the Peter the Great Hall. The officers of the French squadron were honored, as the iconography of the menu reminds us, with a parallelism between the two state visits.
