Lot 102 - DUNOYER DE SEGONZAC (André) - VIRGILE. Les Géorgiques. Translated by Michel de Marolles. Paris: chez l'artiste, 1947. - 3 volumes in-folio, 449 x 335: (2 blank ff.), 201 pp. (3 ff. last 2 blank), printed cover; (2 blank ff.), 213 pp. (7 ff. last 2 blank), printed cover. Dark green morocco, boards richly decorated with a large distinct motif representing a kind of stylized tree, "whose broad decorative arabesques may give the impression of branches", mosaiced with calfskin in five shades graded from pink to dark red for volume 1, from brown to yellow for the second volume, and from orange to brown for the third, all parts remaining in green morocco are adorned with gilded arabesques, smooth spine, edge-to-edge lining and light green box endpapers decorated with gilded, palladium and box mosaic irons in the same tones as the decoration on the boards, gilded edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, dark green morocco spine and flap edge folder, lined slipcase (Paul Bonet 1956). Lioré et Cailler, V, pp. 11-13. - Paul Bonet, Carnets 1924-1971, no. 1133, 1137 and 1150. A remarkable publication with an edition of 250 copies, all on Arches wove paper, watermarked with an ear of wheat and a bee. This is the most important illustrated work by André DUNOYER DE SEGONZAC (1884-1974), his masterpiece, and one of the great illustrated books of the 20th century. It includes 119 original etchings, 99 of them full-page, engraved between 1933 and 1946. Lioré and Cailler, in the Catalogue de l'œuvre gravé de Dunoyer de Segonzac, reported what the artist wrote about this book: "If I chose the theme of the Georgics, it was to try to accompany with etchings the scenes of rural life that have remained almost the same since Antiquity. Nowadays, with motorization having taken over the fields, it would no longer be possible to illustrate Virgil's text by observing peasant life as it has become. It was the poet Roger Allard who, around 1920, first had the idea of having me engrave etchings on Virgilian themes. Later, when the great publisher Ambroise Vollard asked me to illustrate a book with etchings, he suggested a text by Colette, but, remembering Roger Allard's advice, I steered him towards Virgil's Georgics, and he agreed... I engraved all the plates in Les Géorgiques in front of the eternal theme of rural life: the ploughing of wheat and vines, sowing, harvesting, grape-picking, bees... For Chant III, devoted to livestock, I set up with my coppers in the pastures, among the herds of cows and oxen, engraving directly and striving to express their powerful and peaceful plastic beauty..." (Lioré and Cailler, 2005, p. 3). (Lioré et Cailler, Catalogue de l'œuvre gravé de Dunoyer de Segonzac, V, pp. 11-13). ONE OF THE FIRST 50 COPIES (NO. 25) WITH A SUITE OF 25 ETCHINGS ON WATERMARKED VELLUM IN THE SHAPE OF A BUNCH OF GRAPES AND AN OX HEAD, NUMBERED AND SIGNED AT THE HEAD BY THE ARTIST. It is preceded by a second, unsigned suite of 199 etchings on the same paper, bound separately and forming the third volume. This is undoubtedly one of the finest copies of this edition, in sumptuous triplicate bindings produced by Paul Bonet in 1956. The decorations, which are in the same style, are distinct and in different colors. In his notebooks, the bookbinder tells us that he began these bindings in November 1955 and completed them in January 1956 for the first volume, in April 56 for the second and in July of the same year for the last. René Desmules for the binding and Robert Cochet for the gilding, were entrusted with the execution of this work. Despite the sumptuousness of these bindings, Paul Bonet admitted that he found them "too rich". The first volume of this copy was the seventh binding he had done for this work, and despite this, he admitted that he had not yet managed to find the right binding for this work, which he otherwise greatly appreciated. A perfectly preserved copy.

Lot 123 - PICASSO (Pablo) - ARAGON (Louis). Five sonnets by Petrarch. S.l. À la fontaine de Vaucluse, 1947. - In-4, 330 x 254: (26 ff. first and last two blank), printed cover. Paperback, lined cover. Cramer, no. 47. Bilingual edition of this selection of 5 sonnets by Petrarch. The anonymous French translation is by Louis Aragon. "This book, published "A la Fontaine de Vaucluse" in 1947, includes 5 sonnets from the Canzoniere, nos. I, CLXXVI, CLXXXVII, CII, CCLXXXIII. They have been freely translated into French by a translator who wished to remain anonymous, but who, having left his mark in the epigraph, introduction and autograph proverb at the end of the book, is easily recognizable. It's Louis Aragon, paying tribute to Elsa Triolet, his companion from Russia, whom he met in 1928, after a suicide attempt, and who changed his life in so many ways" (Cramer). Only 110 copies of this edition were printed on Arches vellum, illustrated with a full-page ORIGINAL EAU-FORTE BY PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973), dated on the copperplate "9 janvier 45" (138 x 188 mm), unsigned. "Picasso's engraving shows a beautiful oval face surrounded by abundant hair. There's nothing to prevent us from seeing in it an idealized portrait of Laure-Elsa, who, on that January 9th, was already taking on, for Picasso, the features of Françoise Gilot. It remains to be noted that, on the same January day, Picasso made the engraving for Le Marteau sans maître, showing the surrealist transformation of the same face" (Cramer). All copies bear a different autograph proverb by Louis Aragon. In this one, number 45, he wrote: "45 - Il n'est ombre // que d'étendards." A copy by the French-Tunisian writer and essayist Albert Memmi (1920-2020), enriched with this autograph letter signed by Louis Aragon on the false title: to Albert Memmi // for his patience // and my concern // Aragon Dusty cover, two traces of wetness on the lower edge of both covers, small tears at the bottom of the spine. Perfect condition inside. Also included: - ROY (Claude). Élégie des lieux communs, story-poem with a portrait of the author and Claire by Picasso. S.l. Rougerie, [1952]. - In-4, 319 x 240 : 31 pp. in sheets, filled cover. First edition printed in an edition of 865 copies, illustrated with a full-page drawing by Pablo Picasso, depicting a portrait of Claude Roy accompanied by Claire Vervin. One of 600 copies on 125-gram afnor VII vellum, this one given to Albert and Germaine Memmi, bearing this autograph signed letter from the author on Picasso's drawing, in Claude Roy's hand: For Albert and Germaine // Memmi // the hand of their friend // Claude Roy Soiling to cover.

Barcelona: Gustavo Gili, 1959. - Oblong folio, 350 x 500: (2 blank ff.), 142 pp. (3 last blank ff.), 26 plates, illustrated cover. In sheets, parchment-covered cardboard folder and case with yellow cloth boards and parchment edges. Cramer, no. 100. Beautiful and highly sought-after edition of the famous and monumental treatise on bullfighting by 18th-century Spanish bullfighter José Delgado y Gálvez (1754-1801), known as Pepe Illo or Hillo, illustrated with a drypoint on the cover and 26 original, unsigned out-of-text sugar aquatints by Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973). "This book had been commissioned by Gustavo Gili père in 1927 for his bibliophile collection "Ediciones de la Cometa" (...) Picasso had done some engravings (...); Henry de Montherlant wrote a preface; then the wars, in Spain and elsewhere, put an end to the project. Then, in 1956, Gustavo Gili fils reminded Picasso of the project. In the spring of 1957, in Cannes, a few days after the Easter bullfight he had attended in Arles, Picasso drew this light-and-shadow shorthand of a bullfight in copper, creating a modern counterpart to Goya's "La Tauromaquia" (1815). The 26 aquatints accompany the text of what was, in 1796, the first manual for bullfighters and "aficionados"; its author, the famous bullfighter Pepe Illo" (Cramer). This edition was printed in an edition of 263 numbered copies on Guarro vellum, watermarked with a bull's head motif designed by Picasso. This is one of 200 numbered from 31 to 250, and does not bear the artist's signature, but as Cramer explains: "The "achever d'imprimer" mistakenly states that all copies are signed in pencil by the artist, whereas a certain number are not. Copy complete with the two brochures announcing the publication of the work, one containing reproductions of the 26 aquatints, the second, entitled La Cometa, with an introductory text in Spanish. A perfectly preserved copy, in spite of a few rare foxing marks, as is almost always the case, notably on the false title. Some foxing to the plate entitled La Cometa.
