MANESSE (Georges-Henri) - FROMENTIN (Eugène). Les Maîtres d'autrefois. Belgium. Hollande. Paris: L. Carteret, 1914. - In-4, 276 x 189: portrait, (2 ff.), IV, 349 pp. illustrated cover. Red morocco, gilded and cold-stamped fillets and burgundy morocco listel framing the boards, ribbed spine decorated in the same spirit, gilded bold fillet between two gilded thin triple fillets inside, gilded edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, lined slipcase (Noulhac). A very handsome edition printed at 200 copies on wove paper, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author, 27 chapter headings and 27 culs-de-lampe, etched by the engraver and watercolorist Georges-Henri MANESSE (1854-1913). Nominative copy, specially printed for the poet André Sciama, including : - an original watercolor signed by Manesse, depicting the tower of the old church in Delft, also bearing an autograph dedication signed by Carteret ("to my friend A. Sciama. L. Carteret"), - all etchings in 3 states, including the portrait. A very fine copy bound by Noulhac. One freckle on page III. Provenance: André Sciama, with bookplate and dedication. - Robert Beauvillain, with bookplate engraved by Charles Jouas.
