Description

THOMAS (Auguste-Henri) - BARRÈS (Maurice). En Italie. Paris : Auguste Blaizot, René Kieffer, 1911. - Large in-8, 276 x 207: frontispiece, 136 pp, (2 ff.), 11 plates, illustrated cover. Havana morocco, boards decorated with rich, identical and symmetrical decoration by P. Soudée, comprising curved bands of havana, green, black and blue morocco, underlined by roulettes of gilded dots or fillets, bordered in the lower corner by a cold plate, and incorporating in the center an Italian landscape mosaic of black, orange, havana and old rose morocco, and on the upper part the design of a female bust in small vertical cold-stamped fillets on a gilt background, ornate smooth spine, printed silk lining, decorated with an illustration by Thomas, black and gold brocaded silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (René Kieffer et P. Soudée). Edition of 250 copies on Rives vellum in the "Collection éclectique", illustrated with 23 original color etchings by Belgian painter and engraver Auguste-Henri THOMAS (1878-1924), including 12 hors texte and 11 at the head of chapters, and numerous vignettes and ornaments by the same artist. ONE OF 20 FIRST EDITIONS containing 3 states of the etchings, the suite of vignettes in separate edition and ONE ORIGINAL AQUARELLE signed by the illustrator. The latter depicts an exterior view of the Villa Doria Pamphilj in Rome. A superb copy in a binding by René Kieffer, with mosaic decoration on the boards by Pierre Soudée. Signed bindings by Soudée are very rare. He took part in the book arts exhibition at the Musée Galliéra in February-March 1925, alongside such great bookbinders as René Kieffer, Blanchetière, Canape, Frany, Paul Bonet, Louise-Denise Germain and Marius Michel. He exhibited in the "Reliures" category in the section devoted to advertising. His bindings were described as "curious and original", and he usually signed them "artisan relieur, doreur, décorateur". A very well preserved copy, despite a scratch on the gilt on the top of the first cover. Scattered foxing.
