VAN DONGEN (Kees) - VOLTAIRE. La Princesse de Babylone. Paris: Scripta et Picta, 1948. - In-folio, 333 x 238: 121 pp, (3 ff. last 2 blank), illustrated cover. Ivory morocco, boards richly decorated with interlaced and mosaic gilt loops in red and dark blue morocco, surrounding several dark green morocco lozenges, smooth spine decorated in the same spirit, edge-to-edge lining and green box endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, spine folder with dark blue morocco flap bands, lined slipcase (Georges Cretté). Superb edition prepared by Dr. A. Roudinesco for the "Scripta et Picta" group of bibliophiles and art lovers, in an edition of 198 copies. It is illustrated with 71 original color lithographs by the painter Kees VAN DONGEN (1877-1968), printed on the Mourlot frères presses, including 22 letterplates, a frontispiece, a title vignette and 47 compositions in the text. One of a few nominative copies reserved for key contributors, this one SPECIAL PRINT FOR DOCTOR ROUDINESCO, on Lana vellum, ENRICHED WITH A TRIPLE SUITE OF LITHOGRAPHS, in black, in color and in black on China paper. A superb copy in a triple binding by Georges Cretté. Spine of folder and book slightly faded, otherwise a perfectly preserved copy. Provenance : Docteur Roudinesco.
