JULIO BORRELL PLA (Barcelona, 1877 - 1957). "The letter". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower corner. Measurements: 181 x 103 cm. Two young women read a letter. The emotion is revealed in their pearly smiles and in the brightness of their eyes. Julio Borrell captures with ingenuity the vivacity of the expressions and describes with skill the pleats and laces of the folkloric garments. Son and disciple of Pere Borrell del Caso, Julio Borrell was trained at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona. From his father he was influenced by the Nazarenes Claudio Lorenzale and Pablo Milà i Fontanals. In 1888, at the age of eleven, he participated with a canvas in the Barcelona competition of the Universal Exposition, together with his brother Ramón, also a painter. From 1894 he took part in almost all the official exhibitions held in Barcelona and Madrid, being awarded with honorable mention in 1897. That same year he won a second medal at the exhibition in Arcachon, France. His name had a special resonance throughout his exhibitions at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, between 1915 and 1920. His wide production includes works in oil as well as in pastel, and covers a wide range of themes. The theme he most cultivated was that of the classic Spanish maja, the women with mantilla and comb, depicted in his personal sensorial style, with extraordinary skill and great mastery of drawing. Among his many paintings, some of which have been widely reproduced, it is worth mentioning "El viático al Liceo", "Lavapiés en Jueves Santo", "Bodas reales" (Royal Wedding), which he painted for King Alfonso XIII, "Luna de miel" (Honeymoon), "El triunfo del cristianismo" (The Triumph of Christianity), etc. He also dedicated himself to decorative painting, creating religious murals for the church of San Francisco in Buenos Aires and the dome of the Basilica de la Merced in Barcelona, which was destroyed in 1936. Throughout his career, Borrell held numerous solo exhibitions in various Barcelona galleries, and participated in group exhibitions and competitions. Many of his works are exhibited at the MACBA, as well as at the National Art Museum of Catalonia and others.

Parisian or Versailles work, circa 1743 Allegorical fan of Louis XV, the Beloved in gouache, decorated with allegorical figures featuring Louis XV, after his effigy "au bandeau" created in 1740 by Joseph Charles Roëttiers and following the work undertaken at the Cabinet Royal des Médailles by François Boucher. Two plumes and 20 strands , finely engraved and enhanced in color and gilding, decorated with conch shells and shells, with Watteau-style country figures surrounding a triton riding a sea monster. Length: 26 cm. (good condition, minor restoration) Paris or Versailles, ca. 1743. A hand-painted fan depicting French King Louis XV among allegorical figures. The golden age of fan design culminated in the early reign of Louis XV. Unlike many others, this one was not made to celebrate a wedding, but is an evocation of the work undertaken by the King at the Cabinet des Médailles around 1743, the start of his personal reign. François Boucher and Charles-Joseph Natoire depict the King as both protector of the muses and a part of history, thanks to the coinage representing him, created in 1740 by Joseph Charles Roëttiers, general engraver at the Hôtel de la Monnaie. The king's profile was inspired by antique medals, known as "au bandeau". At the age of 30, Louis XV le Bien-Aimé wished to be represented in the prime of life, his hair simply held back by a headband: a rare aesthetic choice. At the center of the fan is a figure of France, or Clio, writing history through medals. Louis XV, in the guise of Apollo, rushes towards her in an antique-style blue toga, garlanded with flowers, while a figure of Fortune pours out a cornucopia of gold coins at his feet, on which the King's profile will be stamped. On the left, two Lovers are busy engraving terracotta medallions, while an angel lights a brazier. On the right, muses lead a farandole of dancers. With its mother-of-pearl frame and rich rocaille vocabulary of conchs, tritons, dolphins and twirling draperies, this fan is a luxurious example destined for a prestigious clientele.

Circle of DIEGO DE VELÁZQUEZ (Seville, 1599 - Madrid, 1660), 17th century ‘Infanta Margarita Teresa of Austria". Oil on canvas. Relined. Frame from the 19th century, with faults and damage due to xylophagous. It conserves remains of a label of the Board of Seizure. Measurements: 152 x 105 cm; 183 x 135 x 8 cm (frame). Margaret Theresa of Austria is depicted as an adolescent in this magnificent painting from the Spanish Golden Age. In its composition, in the type of framing (with the use of the curtain with a cordon) and, above all, in the virtuoso work of goldsmithing to define the qualities and psychology of the character, the oil painting belongs to the courtly circle of Velázquez, whose teachings it inherited with great mastery. Velázquez immortalised the young Margarita Teresa in ‘Las Meninas’, where the Infanta is no more than seven or eight years old. Here Margarita is somewhat older, and her defiant gaze denotes a haughtiness that is not typical of maturity, but rather subtly conveys a certain nonconformity characteristic of puberty. When our anonymous artist portrayed Marguerite, daughter of Philip IV and Mariana of Austria, she was engaged to Emperor Leopold of Austria, whom she would marry in 1666. Perhaps one of the rings she is wearing is a wedding ring. In her right hand she holds a closed fan and in her left a compass, an instrument of undeniable symbolic value (linked, in this case, to her expected ability to command). A frothy ruff enhances her aristocratic bearing, and silver brocades sparkle on her brown velvet dress. A diamond-studded brooch adorns her bosom and a lush headdress covers her golden hair. Her mother-of-pearl skin is illuminated by the faint redness of the crimson lips.An audacious play of glazes manages to extract an unusual depth from the clear gaze.
