Description

Parisian or Versailles work, circa 1743 Allegorical fan of Louis XV, the Beloved in gouache, decorated with allegorical figures featuring Louis XV, after his effigy "au bandeau" created in 1740 by Joseph Charles Roëttiers and following the work undertaken at the Cabinet Royal des Médailles by François Boucher. Two plumes and 20 strands , finely engraved and enhanced in color and gilding, decorated with conch shells and shells, with Watteau-style country figures surrounding a triton riding a sea monster. Length: 26 cm. (good condition, minor restoration) Paris or Versailles, ca. 1743. A hand-painted fan depicting French King Louis XV among allegorical figures. The golden age of fan design culminated in the early reign of Louis XV. Unlike many others, this one was not made to celebrate a wedding, but is an evocation of the work undertaken by the King at the Cabinet des Médailles around 1743, the start of his personal reign. François Boucher and Charles-Joseph Natoire depict the King as both protector of the muses and a part of history, thanks to the coinage representing him, created in 1740 by Joseph Charles Roëttiers, general engraver at the Hôtel de la Monnaie. The king's profile was inspired by antique medals, known as "au bandeau". At the age of 30, Louis XV le Bien-Aimé wished to be represented in the prime of life, his hair simply held back by a headband: a rare aesthetic choice. At the center of the fan is a figure of France, or Clio, writing history through medals. Louis XV, in the guise of Apollo, rushes towards her in an antique-style blue toga, garlanded with flowers, while a figure of Fortune pours out a cornucopia of gold coins at his feet, on which the King's profile will be stamped. On the left, two Lovers are busy engraving terracotta medallions, while an angel lights a brazier. On the right, muses lead a farandole of dancers. With its mother-of-pearl frame and rich rocaille vocabulary of conchs, tritons, dolphins and twirling draperies, this fan is a luxurious example destined for a prestigious clientele.
