Lot 126 - Collection of figurative gold appliqués. Bactria, 1st century A.D. Molded from bitumen matrix, covered with gold foil, round and semi-plastic, partly front and back different, partly identical on both sides, vertically pierced for sewing onto a fabric (?). Underneath: 6 cockerels (h 2.5cm, w 3.5cm), 6 bees (l 3.5cm), 2 bees (l 2cm), 9 acorns (l 2.7cm), 8 oblong oval medallions with zebu cattle with their heads lowered (w 3.8cm, h 2.8cm), 5 oblong oval medallions with griffins (w 3.5cm, h 2.6cm, not pierced), a woman's head with two lateral, wide eyelets (H 4cm) and flat back, two women's heads with upper eyelet (H 3.8cm) and flat back, a woman's bust on a trapezoidal plate (H 3.6cm) with flat back, three women's busts (H 2.5cm) with flat back, 9 diamond-shaped appliqués with a bearded man's head on both sides, 5 kneeling erotic figures (H 2.6-3cm), two of which have different front and back views and three of which have the front view on both sides, three standing, naked men with their hands clasped together in front of their stomachs, forming a bowl (H 4.3cm), 6 spindle-shaped appliqués depicting a naked standing man with a mudra on both sides (H 4cm) and six male robed figures with their arms folded in front of their bodies on both sides (H 5.2cm). 72 pieces! Gold! Cf. the Eros figures on earrings: V. Sarianidi, Bactrian Gold. From the excavations of the Tillya-Tepe Necropolis in northern Afghanistan (1985) p. 89, no. 36. Mostly intact, some gold foil chipped. Provenance: Ex collection Dr. Klaus Marquardt, North Rhine-Westphalia, 1980s to 2009.
