BEHAINE (René) 1880-1966 - Approx. 140 L.A.S. (one incomplete), 1914-1919, and 1930-1935, to publisher Bernard GRASSET or to ,his director Louis BRUN. Approx. 250 pages in various formats, numerous envelopes and addresses. IMPORTANT LITERARY CORRESPONDENCE, sometimes facetious, sometimes acrimonious, concerning "L'Histoire d'une société" and the writer's relationship with his publishing house: moods, manuscript promseses, publication schedule, proofs, advertising, remuneration, distribution, possibility of a Goncourt Prize, approaches for the Nobel Prize (thanks in particular to Pierre de Bénouville), etc....The letters are addressed first to Bernard Grasset, then increasingly and mostly to his "dauphin", the "prieur", the "hyper-director" of Editions Grasset Louis BRUN (one to Madame, one to Gabriel Brunet), with whom Béhaine developed a close friendship. Very rich correspondence, most of it written from his home in Les Rastines, Antibes, some illustrated with amusing drawings. Enclosed: a.s. manuscript of a "Avant-Propos", introduction to his "Histoire d'une société" (4p. in-4); autograph manuscript of a fanciful notice about him and his work: "René Béhaine, né en 1642...". (4 p. in-8); a heavily corrected and commented Grasset contract for "O peuple infortuné" (Grasset 1936); 15 pages of proofs of "Conquête de la vie" (Grasset, 1924); a Grasset publicity brochure devoted to the first 7 volumes of "Histoire d'une société" (1930); and 11 amateur photographs of Béhaine.

Ω A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF ITEMS RELATING TO ELIZABETH KEITH (1887-1956) 20TH CENTURY Comprising: 1. a woodblock print entitled 'Forbidden City, Peking', 1935, signed 'Elizabeth Keith' lower right corner, 29.5cm x 41cm; 2. the original wooden key block for the above print, hand-carved with the main structural elements of the composition; the reverse also carved with the brown and green features in the image, 28cm x 42.7cm x 1.7cm; 3. a copy of M C Salaman 'Masters of the colour print, vol.9, Elizabeth Keith', 1933, with a hand-written dedication by Elizabeth Keith inside reading: To Mr & Mrs de Jongh from Elizabeth Keith With Christmas Greetings. 1944 4. a typed letter by Elizabeth Keith, with hand-written corrections and signed 'Elizabeth Keith' in ink, the letter reading: ' Idbury Manor. Kingham. February 8th. Dear Mr de Jongh, I must apologise for the delay in answering you, I had to go to London yesterday, and I am always busy! No women ever take part on the Noh Stage, nor in the Kabuki either, but in the modern present day plays only. (I should not be surprised to hear that has been put a stop to now!) If you would like to get an insight into the psychology of the Japanese, read the 'Year of the Wild Boar' by Helen Mear, it is excellent. The gown worn by Kongo (red) in' Hagaromo' is of the stiffest gauze perhaps 100 years old (many of his robes were much older) it would stand by itself! He wears many garments underneath. I have seen him dressed. He is a very handsome and charming man, I could not associate him with the devils who are fighting our peoples. His son-in-law hates the Militarists. I daresay he has been executed ere this! To return to the robes, they are generally stiff. The green dress is linen, it hangs more softly. He is (Shigiyama) a comic actor, and rarely has as fine garments as Kongo. Green may fade, I do not think the red will fade much, as I have so many 'coats' or 'brushings' of red! As you will not avoid temptation I shall make you a reduction of 25% if you buy two. 'Returning from the Funeral' is almost exhausted, and ought to have gone up in price. You need not decide at once, I shall not be leaving England for some time to come - Alas! I daresay you have heard that Mr Taylor has not been well, shortage of paper and a still greater shortage of staff, make it impossible for them to undertake books for newcomers! I feel it is perhaps the Partner perhaps who is not keen on Korea. We shall go elsewhere when we are ready, I should have preferred having it done by someone we know about! I think I have answered all your questions, please forgive all the mistakes, I taught myself to type not so long ago! With kind regards to you and family, Yours sincerely Elizabeth Keith.' 5. a handwritten letter by a relative of Elizabeth Keith (possibly her sister), composed shortly after the artist's death, reading: 106. Randolph Avenue WG 24.4.56 Dear Daniel, We thank you deeply for your warm sympathy and true appreciation of Elizabeth. Her loss to us is almost unbearable as she was really the centre of much that is left of our family life. She is mourned - truly mourned- by hundreds of friends in all parts of the world! It is good to realise that so many rejoiced in her quality of generous service to all she could help in some way. We so regret that the last years were spent on only caring really for a household instead of pursuing her art!! If only she could have had any peace at the end, but it was all so painful and had she ever left her sick-room she would have had led an invalid's life and we are grateful that she was spared that entailment of liberty. One can't picture her as helpless and she remains in one's memory as bright anyway. My brother-in-law is terribly cut up and had to keep his 90th birthday celebrations arranged for him by staff with a sad heart. Thank you both again. Affectionately yours, Rachel?. G.A.'; And further newspaper cuttings relating to Elizabeth Keith. (a lot) Provenance: according to the owner, the print was purchased by his grandfather, Mr de Jongh, directly from the artist at the Beaux Arts Gallery in London in 1937, and the wood key block was gifted to him by the Keith's family after her death in 1956. By repute, many of the early wood key blocks Elizabeth Keith used were lost in the fire which destroyed the studio of her publisher Watanabe Shozaburo in the 1920s, making this one a rarity.

LA GESSÉE (Jean de). - Les Premières œuvres françoyses. Premier volume. Anvers, De l'Imprimerie de Christofle Plantin, 1583. 4 volumes in 3 volumes in-4, havana morocco, Du Seuil decoration framing the boards, ornate spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Binding of the second half of the 19th century). First and only extremely rare collective edition of the works of Protestant poet Jean de La Gessée. It was missing from the rich poetic collections of Nodier, Viollet-le-Duc and Herpin. According to J. P. Barbier-Mueller's meticulous count, this gigantic collection of over 1,500 pages comprises a total of 1,841 pieces, most of them previously unpublished. It is divided into four parts, grouped under the titles Jeunesses, Meslanges, Amours and Discours poétiques. The first is a collection of long poems, many of which evoke writers and poets of the period (such as Postel, Du Bartas, Pierre de Brach, Robert Garnier, Baïf, Ronsard, Belleau or Jean Dorat) or are dedicated to great personalities such as the King of Navarre, Henri III, Queen Elisabeth, the Duc de Joyeuse and others. The title is printed in a large woodcut architectural frame. A fine portrait of the author at the age of 31, finely engraved on copper by Jean Wierix, adorns the work: it was reused in the 17th century as a portrait of Ronsard and reproduced as such to this day (J. P. Barbier-Mueller). Along with Houwaert's Pegasides pleyn (1582), this is the finest collection of poems printed by Plantin (cf. Anvers, ville de Plantin et de Rubens, cat. Bibliothèque nationale, 1954, no. 284). Jean de La Gessée (whose name is sometimes spelt La Jessée) was secretary to François, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, and had accompanied his master to the Netherlands in the early 1580s, where the latter had been called to become the new sovereign. It was there, in Antwerp, on the presses of Plantin-Moretus that he had his works printed, no doubt thanks to the prince's protection. The mention Premier volume on the title page suggests that a sequel was planned, but it never saw the light of day; after the failure of his reign, Prince François and the French were expelled from the country, and Jean de La Gessée was unable to continue his publishing venture: It is even probable that the people of Antwerp, in their resentment against the French prince and the gentlemen who had surrounded him, destroyed most of the copies of volume one that had remained in the Plantin warehouse, which would explain their great rarity (Picot). The Rothschild copy contained a leaf printed in civil type, inserted after the title, which is not found here, nor in the copy in the Hector de Backer library (cf. cat. I, 1926, no. 380). A superb copy, perfectly established in the 19th century. The 15 leaves of table and privilege at the end of the fourth part are here in facsimile in a separate third volume bound identically to the other two. The absence of these leaves, noted after the acquisition of the copy at a sale in Troyes in 2000, hardly prevented J. P. Barbier-Mueller from fully enjoying his new poetic-bibliophilic treasure: [...] I considered my acquisition in a less gloomy light. I now owned all the poems contained in this enormous publication. The book was incredibly rare, and no doubt a bookseller would have charged me a huge price, even with a defect that I had to accept for the pleasure of reading "all of La Gessée". There are particular cases where one must accept a Venus de Milo without arms, or a Victory of Samothrace without a head. So my joy today is (almost) unmixed! The facsimile was made from the BnF copy, at the request of the collector who wrote this autograph note in pencil on the colophon of the new volume: "The extreme rarity of the book led me to consider that the text alone counted... I could never have owned it in its entirety, and the tables are not "text". The second volume, containing volumes III and IV, has been settled. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-3, n°2. - N. Ducimetière, Mignonne..., n°77. - Picot, Rothschild, n°750. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°418.

MURET (Marc-Antoine). - Juvenilia. Paris, Veuve Maurice de La Porte, 1553. In-8, black morocco, boards framed by a gilded fillet and decorated with a diamond-rectangle mosaic of fawn morocco, gilded numeral in the center, spine decorated with the same repeated numeral, chocolate moire lining and endpapers, smooth edges, case (Honegger). First edition of Juvenilia by Marc-Antoine Muret (1526-1585), an early collection including the tragedy Julius Caesar, 10 elegies, 2 satires, 107 epigrams, 3 epistles and 6 odes. It appeared in 1552-1553. Second state copy, dated 1553 (see Virginie Leroux's critical edition of the text, Droz, 2009, pp. 26-27 and p. 494). The humanist Marc-Antoine Muret counted among his pupils the young Michel de Montaigne, Remy Belleau, Jodelle and others. A friend of Paul Manutius, he was secretary to Hippolytus II d'Este and professor of moral philosophy at the University of Rome. It was during a stay in Paris from 1551 to 1553, where he forged deep friendships with Ronsard, Du Bellay, Dorat and their friends, that he wrote this work. A precious copy bearing the poet's handwritten ex-dono on the title page: Sexto Cal. Decemb. anno 1552 dabat Muretus Vivenotio. It belonged to Pierre Louÿs (autograph note in pencil on a flyleaf of the old binding), then was acquired by Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller, who had it bound in his cipher. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-4, n°30. - Oberlé, Poètes néo-latins, n°164. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°551.

John Lennon Signed Book - In His Own Write (Obtained in Memphis, Tennessee, During the Final Beatles Tour) - Rare signed book: In His Own Write. Eleventh printing. NY: Simon & Schuster, 1964. Pictorial hardcover, 5.75 x 7.25, 78 pages. Signed on an opening page above a printed sketch in ballpoint by John Lennon. Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG/None, with edgewear and worn spine corners. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a letter of provenance from a previous owner, who states that the signature was obtained when the Beatles played a concert at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee, on August 19, 1966. Published in London in 1964, Lennon's first literary effort is a thin volume comprised of nonsensical, disjointed short stories and line drawings. The first solo effort of any of the Beatles, In His Own Write remains a great showcase of Lennon's creative talent. The eighth date of the Beatles’ final tour took place at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee, where they performed two concerts. The tour, however, was mired in controversy arising from republished comments made by Lennon in a March 4th interview in the London Evening Standard newspaper, in which he stated that the Beatles were ‘more popular than Jesus.’ Although they had sought to downplay the statement in press conferences and interviews, there was much opposition to them, manifested in record-burning, radio boycotts, and protests outside venues. The anti-Beatles feelings were particularly strong in America’s Bible belt, and a local preacher, the Reverend Jimmy Stroad, staged a rally outside the Coliseum. Six members of the Ku Klux Klan picketed outside the venue wearing full robes and, during the second show, a cherry-bomb was thrown onstage during ‘If I Needed Someone.’ The group didn’t stop playing, but they all looked at each other to see who had been shot. ‘It was that bad,’ Lennon later remembered.

Jimi Hendrix Signed Program (London 1967) - Rare original 7.75 x 9.75 program from The Jimi Hendrix Experience's April 1967 UK Tour—the band's first first ever tour, opening for The Walker Brothers—neatly signed on the group's full-page portrait in blue ballpoint by Jimi Hendrix. The program has been folded open to the Hendrix-signed page, archivally corner-mounted, matted, and framed under Tru Vue Museum Glass to an overall size of 16 x 18. The inside of the program has also been signed by Cat Stevens, Engelbert Humperdinck, and John, Gary, and Scott Walker. Buried behind the chart-topping Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens, and Engelbert Humperdinck, the Jimi Hendrix Experience received modest billing at the start of the tour. By year's end they were one of the most sought-after tickets in live music, soaring high off the successful debut of Are You Experienced and their now-legendary performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks, indicating that the autographs were obtained at the Finsbury Park Astoria on March 31, 1967, the opening night of the UK tour, as well as a typed provenance statement from the original owner, in part: “I was given the signed programme by my eldest sister who worked for the ABC Cinema organisation for approximately five years the company had offices above our local cinema, the Granby in Reading. A perk of the job was that she often had the opportunity to attend pop concerts in London, this allowed her to go backstage where she could meet a few of the performers, so that she was able to get signed programmes which were given to me.” In fine condition, with light handling wear; the piece has not been examined outside of the frame.

Brian Jones Autograph Letter Signed, Sent to the First Secretary of the Rolling Stones Fan Club - ALS signed “Brian,” penned in black ballpoint on both sides of a 5 x 5 section of a very rare handbill promoting the Rolling Stones’ Sunday residency at the Ken Colyer Jazz Club (Studio 51) in London in June 1963. The handwritten letter, which is addressed to Doreen Pettifer, the first secretary of the Rolling Stones Fan Club, reads: “Sorry, no photos of us - but I’m sending a few others for you to go on with plus a few other items which may be of interest to you.” Interestingly, Jones has crossed out the ‘Studio 51’ club name and address and replaced them with “Palladium” and “Argyll St. W.1.” Jones continues on the reverse: “With compliments, the Stones. All completed love. The things we do for you! (The things we’d like to do for you!!) Can I open an account at you bank?” In very good to fine condition, with paper loss to the bottom, a tape stain, and central horizontal fold. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and the original hand-addressed mailing envelope, which was postmarked in Chelsea on June 25, 1963. The consignor notes that the letter originates from the collection of Doreen Pettifer, the Surrey-based teenager who would go on to set up The Rolling Stones Fan Club and become the group’s first-ever fan club secretary after meeting them at the Wooden Bridge Jazz Club in Surrey, England on March 29, 1963. Pettifer was so impressed by the Stones's performance that she approached Mick Jagger and mentioned that she could put the group in touch with the disc jockey David Jacobs and get them an audition to be on television. Pettifer had previously been on the panel of Juke Box Jury and was still in contact with the presenter, Jacobs. After returning home on the evening of March 29th she immediately typed her first letter to Jacobs to promote her discovery. In the coming months, Pettifer would selflessly write to almost every television station, radio station, and music-related magazine to let them know about The Rolling Stones; she even approached the BBC to try to get the group an audition. During this period she was constantly in direct contact with the members of the group keeping them informed about her promotional activities. In early June 1963 Pettifer approached Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham to request that she be allowed to set up the first official Rolling Stones Fan Club. Oldham passed the request on to Eric Easton who handled the Rolling Stones business matters. On June 14, 1963, Easton replied to Pettifer to give her the go-ahead to set up the fan club and offered her any help necessary to start the club. In July 1963 the first ever Rolling Stones fan club newsletter was mailed out. Wishing to remain anonymous, Pettifer adopted the pseudonym Diane Nelson in her position as fan club secretary. Doreen Pettifer pioneered the Stones and their music throughout 1963 and 1964 and wrote an authorized and still unpublished manuscript documenting the genesis of the group. In the second half of the sixties, she became involved in fan club work for a host of groups including Eric Clapton and John Mayall’s Bluebreakers.

Prince Handwritten Rehearsal Notes from the 1988 Lovesexy Tour - From the Collection of Prince's Former Guitar Tech - Exceptionally rare handwritten rehearsal notes by Prince from his 1988 Lovesexy Tour, which were almost certainly used by Prince for his performance at the Palatrussardi in Milan, Italy, on July 16, 1988. The notes, unsigned and penned in blue ballpoint on an off-white 6 x 8.25 sheet of Hilton International Milano guest stationery, provide detailed stage production and musical arrangements for the songs ‘Alphabet Street,’ ‘Positivity,’ and ‘Let’s Go Crazy,’ three songs from two of Prince's most popular albums of the 1980s: Lovesexy and Purple Rain. Given the inclusion of the chart-topping hit ‘Let's Go Crazy,’ this was likely towards the end of the show, as part of the encore. Prince begins with instructions regarding the end of “Alphabet Street,” writing “V, W, X, Y, Z,” “confusion,” and an elaborate doodle with musical notes, stars, an exclamation point, and a question mark. He writes “on the 1—whoosh > water sound,” and then segues with a direction to “End Positivity chords with sax while stage pumping dry ice, Yes signs flicker.” Prince concludes with a “Positivity edit,” clarifying lyrical queues “Raise yo hand 4 Pos[itivity]” and “Hold on 2 your soul.” “That would be the end,” he writes, and then closes with “Water sound and chords / NO sax as usual — water segues into LET'S GO CRAZY.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from REAL, and a letter of authenticity from Jeff Gold, the owner of Recordmecca and a former executive vice president/general manager of Warner Bros. Records, who worked closely with Prince during the 1990s and art directed numerous album covers for him, including Diamonds & Pearls, Love Symbol, and The Hits/The B-Sides. Gold affirms that he obtained these notes directly from Joel Bernstein, Prince’s former guitar technician, who also provides a signed letter of authenticity. Bernstein’s letter reads: “This letter is to authenticate Prince's handwritten rehearsal notes likely dating from his show at the Pala Trussardi in Milan, Italy, on July 16, 1988. On stationary from the Hilton International Milano hotel, Prince has noted the detailed changes he wanted to make during three songs: ‘Alphabet Street,’ ‘Positivity’ and ‘Let's Go Crazy.’ Prince only played ‘Positivity’ five times during the Lovesexy tour, and never with these other songs. As the set list for the July 16 show is undocumented, and he wrote these notes while in Milan, these notes almost certainly were for that show. I worked with Prince from 1987 through 1991, as his personal guitar technician for concerts and recording, and occasionally as his photographer. This period included, Sign O' The Times, Lovesexy, the Batman soundtrack, and My Name is Prince. This is from my personal collection." Rehearsal notes by Prince are virtually unobtainable, with this rare handwritten sheet offering a unique glimpse into Prince's artistry and hands-on approach as a live performer during the 1988-1989 Lovesexy Tour, widely regarded as one of his creative peaks. A museum-quality Prince collectible of exceptional appeal and significance.

Prince's Stage-Worn Scarf from a 'Secret Show' in Cincinnati (1984) - Large section of Prince's stage-worn black scarf from his 'secret show' at Bogart's in Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 23, 1984, during the iconic 'Purple Rain' era. The scarf segment measures approximately 25″ long by 7″ wide, and was tossed into the adoring crowd at the end of the show—where it was ripped to shreds by screaming fans, fighting over a relic worn by their idol. In fine condition, with fraying and small tears to either end. Accompanied by a handwritten letter of provenance from the fan who caught the scarf, in full: "In 1984 I was working in Middletown, Ohio. One of my closest friends was a student at a college in Cincinnati, Ohio. We heard a promo on the radio about this 'Hot-Red and Blue' band coming to play at Bogart's in Cincinnati. My friend was convinced it would be Prince. Red + Blue = Purple. Purple - Purple Rain - Prince. When we got there, we didn't know what to expect. Everyone was in shock and ecstatic when Prince appeared and began playing! There were a lot of screams and tears everywhere! My friend and I were standing on the floor, close to the middle of the stage. Toward the end of the concert, Prince grabbed his long, black silk scarf from his neck, and threw it off the front of the stage, into a swarm of fans. I, along with several other fans, grabbed and held on! It began tearing into pieces. I held onto my piece, as others held onto theirs. I ended up with a 2 foot piece of his scarf. It has been one of my prize possessions. (It also had the best scent/cologne for months!)."

Salvador DALI (1904-1989). Collection of unpublished correspondence from Salvador Dali to Josep Puig Pujades, leader of the Empordà Spanish Republicans. "La femme visible". Editions surréalistes, Paris. 1930. Copy no. "service de Presse". Signed and dedicated. Paperback, aluminium foil cover filled and covered with red crystal paper printed in black. With an original etching. "Métamorphose de Narcisse". Editions surréalistes. 1937. Unnumbered copy. Dedicated and signed. Four letters, dedications and postcards addressed by Dali to Puig Pujades are enclosed. Translation of the transcription of the letters: 1. Letter 1. My dear friend; Forgive me for not writing to you sooner, as you must know, of XXX's death. Within a few days I shall be sending him my last book. I hope it will have the [X] to give him a few pleasant or at least entertaining hours. Gala and I are [XXX] Your friend DALI 2. Letter 2. Friend Puig Pujades, By mail you will receive my latest book, in which is reproduced one of my last works. In the autumn, we'll see each other as we had decided XXX to make a big propaganda film for abroad, which we'd come to Barcelona and [on the coast?] "Montserrat" (big mountain with sanctuary), "Gaudi", the sardana "xiquets de valls" (troupe of castellers, surely), etc. etc.... Everything that makes up Catalonia's "originality phenomenon". Did you receive the package of newspapers I sent him from New York? And now a favor I want to ask of you. I'd like to send some money to the fishermen of Port Lligat, to help them a little in these difficult times, since they are (were?) all our friends. The mayor of Cadaquès already knows how to divide the amount, the problem being to get the money there, as the banks don't want to take responsibility for sending it and I lost the amount once in Perpignan, and you could take care of getting it to the mayor of Cadaquès. I would be very grateful in advance. I'd love to hear your impressions, and if you have them to hand, I'd love some weekly newspapers from Figueres. Salvador Dali Homage to your wife from me and Gala. 3. Comments to the visible woman: Distinguished friend, Forgive me for simply passing you a press copy but, in the contract I have with (the publisher?) I unfortunately do not have any copies. (xxx) in the copy I sent him and xxx everything is naturally quite inferior in terms of presentation (e.g.) a metal (strip?) is missing in front of Gala's habit, which makes it look like a mirror (xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx). If you're interested, I have a deluxe copy on xxx (marble?), (xx xxxx xx) (Costis?) the (least?) possible, (xxx xx, of the unit are already subscribed) I miss never hearing from you. XXX to your wife and friends, see you in two weeks. Best regards Dali Thanks to Mr. Tomas Bres Pintat for his version of the letters.

Pablo Picasso (Franco-Spanish, 1881-1973) Portrait of a Bearded Man, 1969 Black felt pen. Sent "Pour mon ami Brassaï", signed "Picasso" and dated "12.10.69". On the page of the Czechoslovak publisher Tatran's 1966 book devoted to the two artists. Height 19.5 Width 18.5 cm. Provenance: former Brassaï collection (1899-1984). Pablo Picasso, 1969. A black felt pen portrait of a faun. Signed and dedicated "to my friend Brassaï". On a page of a 1966 book about both artists. Picasso Committee certificate dated April 10, 2024. Exhibitions : - "Brassaï-Picasso Conversation with Light", Anne Baldassari, Musée Picasso, Paris, February-April 2000. - Brassaï, Paris et Picasso", Musée Picasso Málaga, Brassaï Picasso, November 2021-April 2022. Picasso's portrait of this virile man, with his straight nose, laughing eyes and full beard framing a slight smile, appears on the cover of the Czech edition of his conversations, published by Brassaï with Tatran in 1966. When "l'oeil de Paris" visited the sacred monster on rue de la Boétie in 1932 to portrait him, the friendship between the two expatriates was immediate. Brassaï transcribed Picasso's words at the time: "I like your photos because they're true. The ones you took on rue de la Boétie were like a blood test, allowing us to analyze and diagnose what I was like at that moment". Like graffiti nestled in the hollow of a page, Picasso's free, vivid line drawing recalls the artist's photographic work on fragments of Parisian walls adorned with notches and posters. Brassaï was fascinated by the contrasts and contradictions of Paris; he loved to depict the artistic and intellectual bohemia as well as its interloped corners and walls worn down by popular energy. In this autograph, Picasso pays him a friendly tribute.

CAULAINCOURT (ARMAND-LOUIS-AUGUSTIN DE). Autograph letter signed [to Marshal Lannes]. Moscow, October 11 [1812]. One p. in-4. RARE LETTER FROM MOSCOW by the Grand Écuyer, recounting in his Souvenirs his return from Russia by sleigh with the Emperor. "Madame la duchesse, the excellent chocolate arrived at a time when I was so overwhelmed that my gratitude was silent so as not to speak of my misfortunes to one who knows so well how to love her own. NOTHING CAN CONSOLER ME FOR THE LOSS OF MY BROTHER [AT THE BATTLE OF MOSKOVA], and the distance in which I live from all my family adds to it by the worry that my unfortunate mother's health gives me. She will only live through tears, as we have just lost M. d'Aubusson the younger near Drissa. The letter announcing this new misfortune is dated September 12. I am told that M. Guéheneuc is doing well [the marshal's father, François-Scholastique Guéheneuc, then a senator]. Behold my indiscretion, Madame la Duchesse, I speak only of my sorrow when all I wanted to offer you was my thanks. Please forgive my indiscretion and accept with kindness the homage of my respect..." The Grand-Écuyer's brother, cavalry general Auguste Jean Gabriel de CAULAINCOURT, led the 5th cuirassiers to capture the great redoubt at the battle of La Moskowa, but was killed in the action. He was married to Henriette Blanche d'AUBUSSON de La Feuillade, whose younger brother, a lieutenant in Sebastiani's corps, was wounded in Russia and for a time thought dead. - LA MARECHALE LANNES, née Louise Guéheneuc (1782-1856), was Joséphine's lady of the palace, then Marie-Louise's lady-in-waiting. Her father was made a senator and her brother an aide-de-camp to Napoleon I.

LANNES (JEAN). Set of 3 autograph letters signed to his wife Louise Guéheneuc. [Portugal, 1804 and n.d.]. Stationed in Lisbon from March to August 1802, then from March 1803 to July 1804, Jean Lannes served France's interests with vigor and sometimes naiveté, but managed to win the friendship of the Regent of Portugal - who initially tried to use him, but managed to negotiate a treaty of neutrality and subsidies. - "This Thursday" [probably April 1804]. "I am sending you... a statement of the people to whom you will distribute the five [c]erfs I am passing on to you; if you think you still understand the Marquis de Pombal, you will do so. WE HAD A VERY NICE HUNT YESTERDAY. THE PRINCE IS OF A KINDNESS ONE CANNOT IMAGINE... Today we're going to hunt hare, so tomorrow I'll send you some...". (one p. in-8, address on back). - "This Friday" [probably April 1804]. " ... Tomorrow we will finish our hunt and the day after tomorrow I will dine with you. THE PRINCE ABSOLUTELY WANTED TO SEND YOU A WILD BOAR AND THREE HARES..." (3/4 p. in-4, address on back). - This Saturday. " ... THE PRINCE ABSOLUTELY WANTED ME TO SEND YOU TWO WINES. YOU CAN SHARE THEM WITH THE MINISTERS OF VIENNA, RUSSIA, HOLLAND, THE AMBASSADOR AND THE NUNCIO. I'm not telling you... how much I'm worried here, it takes all this to make me stay so long away from you and my little Alfred [second son of Lannes, of whom the Regent was godfather]..." LANNES (JEAN). Set of 5 autograph letters signed to his wife Louise Guéheneuc. 1805. VICTORY OF DONAUWÖRTH - Donauwörth [in Bavarian Swabia, north of Augsburg], "le 16" [vendémiaire an XIV-8 octobre 1805]. "I am taking advantage of the departure of a courier that His Majesty is sending to Paris to tell you, my good friend, that I am still doing well. WE CROSSED THE DANUBE YESTERDAY, THE EN[NE]MI ARMY IS ABSOLUTELY CUT OFF. I hope that in two days we will have many prisoners..." (3/4 p. in-4, address on spine; tears to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). On October 6, 1805, the vanguard of Soult's corps took control of the Donauwörth bridge, while Murat and his cavalry captured the Rain-am-Lech bridge, supported by Colonel Wathier's dragoons. Napoleon I then personally led his troops across the Danube. VICTORIES AT WERTINGEN AND GÜNZBURG - Augsburg [in Bavaria], 17 vendémiaire an XIV [October 9, 1805], erroneously dated "18". "You see... we're marching fast and making good headway; THE ARMY CORPS I COMMAND MEET THE ENEMY YESTERDAY, we fought for about four hours, I TAKEN THREE THOUSAND PRISONERS AND ABOUT AS MANY KILLED. So it was I who opened the campaign. I received a very kind letter from the Emperor. THE EMPEROR'S LETTER. THE ENEMY ARMY IS MORE BLOCKED THAN IT WAS AT MARINGO. We hope that in eight days it will be all in our power. MARECHAL NAY HAS ALSO BEATEN THE ENEMY, taking many prisoners. Thus, the Austrians are in plain rout [and] no retreat; THE RUSSIANS WILL ARRIVE JUST TO BE ROSSED as soon as there is no Austrian army left... I receive orders to leave to camp an enemy corps...". (one p. 1/4 in-4; one margin and one tear restored). The battle of Wertingen, won on October 8, 1805 by the troops of Murat and Lannes over the Austrians under Baron Auffenberg, was the first serious engagement of the campaign. The battle of Günzburg was won on October 9, 1805 by the Walther division of Marshal Ney's corps, over General d'Aspre's Austrians, and enabled the French to regain control of the town's bridge over the Danube. ULM TAKEOVER - Nördlingen [in Bavarian Swabia, northwest of Donauwörth], Vendemiaire 29, Year XIV [October 21, 1805]. "I'm well, I'm tired, but FATIGUE IS NOTHING, WHEN WE ARE VICTORIOUS AS WE ARE. THERE IS NO MORE AUSTRIAN ARMY: we've taken over 50,000 prisoners, over 100 cannon and at least 800 cars. SO HERE WE ARE WITH THE RUSSIANS IN A FEW DAYS... Please see Princess MURAT and tell her that the Prince is doing well, HE HAS BEEN FIGHTING FOR THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS. He has taken ten thousand prisoners with more than thirty general officers and pri[s] all the enemy's park, MY ARMY CORPS WAS WITH HIM, WE OPENED THE BALL TOGETHER, and we are closing it with the Austrians. A BRAVER PRINCE COULD NOT BE SEEN. I beg you to tell your friend [Louise Guéheneuc's father] to go and see Prince Joseph for me, and to tell him that I am very upset that he is not with us. I think he is very useful where he is. Besides, he is well, and loved everywhere... [He then expresses his hope that the campaign will end soon, so that he can be reunited with his wife and children]. I wrote to you that I had received a letter informing you that YOU WERE ON DUTY TO THE IMPERATRISSE FOR THE CAMPAIGN IN HIS TRAVEL [Josephine was away from home from September 1805 to January 1806, in Strasbourg and then in various German cities]... P.S. Say a thousand friends to the good doctor [Jean-Nicolas Corvisart, Napoleon I's personal physician, and a great friend of Jean Lannes], tell him to kill all the rabbits at Maison [the Maisons estate, now Maisons-Laffitte, acquired by Marshal Lannes in October 1804, where Doctor Corvisart was a frequent guest, especially for hunting]. I like him, I will like him even more if it is possible" (3 pp. in-4, address on the back, remnant of the red wax seal of the General Staff of the V Corps of the Grande Armée; marginal tear with loss of a few words). Through a masterful encircling maneuver, Napoleon I was able to cut off General Mack's army from its rear and lock it in Ulm, forcing it to surrender on October 20, 1805. "J'ESPERE QUE NOUS SERONS DANS HUIT JOURS A VIENNE...". - Linz [in Austria], "14 [sic for 13]" brumaire an XIV [November 4, 1805]. Letter written shortly before the victory of Lannes and Murat in Am

LANNES (JEAN). Set of 5 autograph letters signed to his wife Louise Guéheneuc. 1806. - Probably Maisons, today Maisons-Laffitte], "this Thursday" [probably March 1806]. "I am very sorry not to see you, my good Louise. If it hadn't been for the bad weather, I could have gone to Paris on Monday and not come back without you... Give my love to our little children. I'm very happy that you tell me the little one will be pretty. Adieu ma belle, I can't tell you how much I love you..." (one p. in-4, address on spine; small tear to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). Louise Guéhenneuc had just given birth to their daughter Joséphine on March 4, 1806. - "Beurbourg" [probably for Würzburg], "le 5 8bre" [1806]. "I'm having deer driven by a [s]erg[en]t from Quiot's regiment. Tu verras... de les faire aller jusqu'à Étoge [property of Louise Guéhenneuc's parents, in the Marne département] et de là à Paris après quelques jours de repaux..." (3/4 p. in-4; address on spine; small tear in address leaf due to opening, but no damage to text). Marshal Lannes was a member of Empress Josephine's retinue, who was visiting Mainz at the time. The future general Joaquim-Jérôme Quiot Du Passage, Lannes' aide-de-camp during the Austerlitz campaign, had been colonel of the 100th infantry regiment in the V corps of the Grande Armée under the orders of the same Lannes since December 2, 1805. "WE ARE ON THE MARCH NIGHT AND DAY. MY CORPS IS CROSSING THE ELBE RIGHT NOW...". - Dessau [between Leipzig and Berlin], October 21 [1806]. "I can't give you my news... as I would like. We [are] on the march night and day. My corps is crossing the Elbe right now, and I hope we'll be in Berlin in five days. THE ENEMY ARMY SINCE THE LAST BATTLE [IENA] HAS DISAPPEARED. I don't see that we can have another battle...". (one p. in-4, address on spine; small tears to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). IN PURSUIT OF THE DEBRIS OF THE PRUSIAN ARMY - Löcknitz, "à dis lieux de la mer" [in Prussian Pomerania, now in Germany, east of Stettin today Szczecin in Poland], [November 1, 1806]. "I'm doing well,... WE ARE STILL MAKING A LOT OF PRISONERS, another six thousand this evening, here are 30 thousand prisoners we have made since yesterday. ALL WE HAVE TO DO NOW IS TAKE A SMALL CORPS THAT IS BLOCKED TO GET THE WHOLE PRUSSIAN ARMY...". (3/4 p. in-4, address on spine, vestige of red wax seal; tears to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). Napoleon I had sent five of his marshals in pursuit of the routed Prussian army. Murat and Lannes were to take charge of General de Hohenlohe, who was trying with his troops to rally his king in East Prussia: they caught up with him on October 28, 1806 at Prenzlau, where he was already fighting with General Lasalle, and defeated him completely, taking many prisoners. "WE TOOK THE WHOLE PRUSSIAN ARMY, THAT IS, OVER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND MEN...". - Stettin [Prussian Pomerania, now Szczecin in Poland], [early November 1806]. After the battle of Prenzlau, Marshal Lannes let the men rest for a few days, to reconstitute his army's logistics, while having his light cavalry beat the Prussian country between the Oder and Vistula rivers. "I write to you very often, my dear friend, and I don't understand why you don't receive my letters. I have received four of your letters by courier from my corps. I don't need to tell you, my dear friend, what a pleasure they were... I'm with my corps in Stettin, from the shores of the Baltic Sea. I DON'T KNOW IF THE EMPEROR WILL MAKE PEACE, all I can tell you [is] that we [have] taken the whole Prussian army, that is more than one hundred and twenty thousand men. Thus, there will not be another shot fired with this nation...." (folio, address on spine; address leaf almost detached with tears due to opening without affecting the text). The future general Jean Guillaume Barthélemy Thomières was then adjutant-commandant on the staff of the 5th corps under Marshal Lannes. COMPLETE CARD TO BE FOUND IN THE CATALOG

LANNES (JEAN). Set of 13 autograph letters signed to his wife Louise Guéheneuc. Present-day Poland, 1806-1808. - Stettin [then in Prussia, now Szczecin in Poland], November 4, 1806. "I thought... that everything was over and that I would be with you soon; we are leaving in two days for Poland [in fact his cavalry would leave on November 7 and his infantry on November 8], but you can rest easy, we won't be fighting anymore and this movement will only delay the pleasure of embracing you for a few days... I urge you, my dear friend, not to grieve. THIS IS OUR LAST CAMPAIGN. It is much better to end it now that we are underway, than to start again in two months[s]. So, my dear friend, once I am with you, it will be for life... Thomières and Louis are doing well..." (one p. in-4, address on spine with vestige of bronze wax seal; tear to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). Louis Guéheneuc, brother-in-law and future aide-de-camp to Marshal Lannes, would become a general and aide-de-camp to Napoleon I. The future general Jean Guillaume Barthélemy Thomières was then adjutant-commander of the 5th corps staff under Marshal Lannes. - Bromberg [then in Prussia, today Bydgoszcz in Poland], November 14 [1806]. "I haven't heard from you for several days... Why don't you write to me by the courier of the Empress? I AM WITH MY CORPS ON THE VISTULA. THE POLES ARE VERY FOND OF US. There's talk of peace. You have no doubt... of the pleasure it would give me. As soon as it's assured, I'll send you a letter to let you know. And in case we spend the winter in this country, I'll bring you to Berlin. You can be sure of that..." (one p. in-4, address on spine, vestige of red wax seal; tears to address leaf due to opening without affecting text). - Thorn [then in Prussia, now Toruń in Poland], November 24, 1806. "You see, my good friend, that I am keeping my word to you, and that I am sending you a lovely courier to accompany you to Berlin [Louis Guéheneuc, brother of the maréchale, future aide-de-camp to Jean Lannes, also a future general and future aide-de-camp to Napoleon I]. I advise Louis not to walk at night. I forbid you, you hear me, to come at short notice because of the strait. As soon as you get to Berlin, I'll leave to join you... A SU[S]PENSION OF ARMS HAS BEEN SIGNED IN BERLIN, Marshal Duroc has gone to see the King [of Prussia] for ratification, and there is no doubt about it. Je pence... que la paix s'en suivra bientôt, et que nous reviendrons ensenble près de nos petits enfans..." (one p. in-4, address on back). - "To the Imperial Quarter" [Finkenstein Castle in Prussia, now Kamienec in Poland], April 30, 1807. "Mr. Quioq has arrived, he took 13 days on the road, he gave me all your letters. I am very surprised, my good friend, that you are not hearing from me... I have received a letter from Monsieur Corvizard [Jean-Nicolas Corvisart, Napoleon I's personal physician, and a great friend of Jean Lannes], and I am jealous that my little girl is as much in love with him as he tells me she is...". (one p. in-4, address on spine; tears to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). The future general Joaquim-Jérôme Quiot Du Passage, aide-de-camp to Lannes during the Austerlitz campaign, had been colonel of the 100th infantry regiment in the V corps of the Grande Armée under the same Lannes since December 2, 1805. - In front of Danzig [in Prussia, now Gdańsk in Poland], May 20, 1807. " ... My health is still the same, THERE IS ONLY COURAGE THAT SUPPORTS ME. J'AURAI BIEN DE LA PEINE A BIEN REMETTER, MON CŒUR N'EST PAS CONTENT, tu sais mieux que personne que je ne suis pas heureux quand je ne fais pas les choses avec plaisir, et serte je ne suis pas payé pour cela; ON N'AIME ICI LES GENS QUE QUAND ON A BESOIN D'EUX, je m'en suis bien convincu, heureux si on ne cherche pas à attaquer votre honneur... I'm not writing to your friend [Louise's father], I'm on horseback night and day..." (one p. in-4, address on spine; marginal tears due to opening without damage to text). The marshal, wounded at Pułtusk in December 1806, had been ill and had had to leave his command to take convalescent leave in Warsaw, then had been placed at the head of the reserve corps of the Grande Armée in May 1807 to cover the operations of the siege of besieged Danzig: he enabled the Russian relief army to be repulsed. LANNES (JEAN). Set of 5 autograph letters signed to his wife Louise Guéheneuc. 1808-1809. TO TUDELA: "... I BEAT 50,000 MEN WITH DIS THOUSAND FRENCH...". - Tudela, November 28, 1808. " ... I LIVED A BATTLE ON THE 23rd AT CASTAGNOS, IT WAS COMPLAINTLY BEATEN, we took many prisoners and 45 cannon. We are pursuing CASTAGNOS and marching on SARAGOSSE, which will soon be in our power. I expect to be back with the Emperor in two or three days; I'm very tired... Louis had a horse killed under him and was [a little] scratched in the face [the future general Louis Guéheneuc, brother-in-law and aide-de-camp to Marshal Lannes, also a future aide-de-camp to Napoleon I]; I HAVE BEATEN 50 THOUSAND MEN WITH A THOUSAND FRENCH...". (one p. in-4, address on spine; tears to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). Three important victories enabled Napoleon I, who had come in person to supervise operations in Spain, to re-establish the military situation in his brother Joseph's kingdom: the present victory of Tudela won by Marshal Lannes against General Francisco Javier Castaños, the battle of Burgos won by Marshal Soult against the Marquis de Belveder on November 10, and on the same day the battle of Espinosa won by Marshals Lefebvre and Victor against Blake. "TUDELA. THIS BATTLE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL I HAVE YET SEEN...". - Burgos, December 4, 1808. "I only have time to tell you that I am well... I'm going to join the Emperor, who must be in Madrid. You will no doubt have received my letter from Tudela. This battle is the most beautiful I have yet seen. I will send you the report I made to the Emperor... Louis [Guéheneuc] is doing well..." (3/4 p. in-8, address on spine; tears to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). - Spain], December 14, 1808. " ... I am very angry with you that you write me only two words; you know, my dear Louise, that I like you to write me long letters; I think that much has been planted at Maison [the estate of his château de Maisons, now Maisons-Laffitte], and that our hotel is coming along [in accordance with the emperor's desire to see his marshals properly established in Paris, in December 1807 Marshal Lannes had bought the Hôtel de Rohan-Chabot, rue de Varenne]. Our children must be very kind, Joséphine must be a great lady, give them all a big kiss for me; I arrived yesterday evening quite tired, I think I'll stay eight days, I'll use them to take good care of my health, I HAVE SUFFERED A LITTLE FROM THIS DAMN HORSE FALL...". (one p. in-8, address on spine with remnants of red wax seal; tear to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). - Benavente, January 5, 1809 [erroneously dated 1808]. "I forgot to tell you... to have six months of my income in Vesphalia paid to you; for this you must contact Mr d'Arue who must be in Paris at the moment [Pierre Daru, who had been intendant general of the Grande Armée in Prussia and Poland]; you will tell Gaudin to continue to receive my salary as m[aréch]al and g[énéra]l en chef, I receive nothing here... The weather is horrible in this country... HERE, THEY ARE NOT STRONG, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND THERE IS MUD UP TO THE WAIST... (one p. 1/2 in-4, address on spine, remnants of red wax seal; tears to address leaf due to opening without affecting text). - Valladolid, January 8, 1809. "You will be very surprised... when you learn that mdame Frère has left her husband [General Bernard-Georges-François Frère, Marshal Lannes' chief of staff for the siege of Saragossa], to put herself in the hands of a little poliçon; this poor devil is sorry, he is sending an aide-de-camp to Paris to make sure she doesn't get the little money he has plastered, at least the children won't be ruined. We've been at Vailladoli[d] for two days; I'm leaving tomorrow to go to Sarragosse; I hope, once that city has been taken, to get to Paris [the siege would not end until February 21, 1809]; EVERYTHING ANONCES THAT HER MAJESTY WILL LEAVE SOON; THE ENGLISH HAVE LEAVE, ... LARREY (DOMINIQUE-JEAN). Set of 5 letters and pieces. A SYMBOL OF EMERGENCY SURGERY IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY, DOMINIQUE-JEAN LARREY (1766-1842) was Surgeon-in-Chief of the Consular and Imperial Guard, Surgeon-in-Chief of the Grande Armée, Inspector General of the Health Service, and member of the Académie des Sciences and the Académie de Médecine. He took part in all Napoleon's campaigns, from Italy (1796-1797) to Waterloo (1815). RARE PIECE WRITTEN DURING BONAPARTE'S VISIT TO MALTA - Signed as Surgeon-in-Chief of the Army of the East, addressed to Surgeon Jean-Baptiste Labrunie. MALTE, 28 prairial an VI [16 juin 1798]. "You will please, citizen, go immediately to the newly established hospital in Malta, to fulfill the functions of your rank, under the orders of the chief health off[icie]rs. Greetings and fraternity..." (3/4 p. in-4, printed "Military Hospitals" letterhead; stains due to prophylactic operations carried out in the lazaretto, marginal tear reaching 2 words without missing). On his way to Egypt, Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Malta: his troops landed on June 10 and the knights capitulated on June 12, 1798. He left the island on June 19, leaving behind a small occupying force. - Signed as surgeon-in-chief of the Armée d'Orient. Marseille, 25 frimaire [an X, 16 décembre 1801]. "D. J. Larrey [...] certifies that citizen Mainville, 3rd class surgeon, served in the Egyptian expedition throughout its duration, and that he constantly fulfilled the duties entrusted to him with zeal, activity and intelligence worthy of praise..." (1/2 p. folio, headed with his name and title, illustrated with a woodcut vignette depicting an allegory of Humanity). Dominique-Jean Larrey distinguished himself particularly during the Egyptian expedition, through his courage, activity and organizational skills: he founded a surgical school in Cairo, cared for a large number of wounded, bringing one of them back on his shoulders under enemy fire at the height of the battle of Canopé, provided care for all, including the Mamelukes, closely studied the pathological facts particular to this region (scurvy, dysentery, ophthalmia, etc.), had the sick taken on board in a ship with a view to their recovery. He was among the last to leave Egypt on October 17, 1801. Bonaparte made him surgeon-in-chief of the Consuls' Guard on his return. "THE RUSSIAN ARMY... WAS TERRIFIED ET S'EST DISPERSEE DANS LE FOND DE LA RUSSIE..." - Autograph letter signed to his wife Élisabeth-Charlotte Le Roux Delaville. VILNA [then in Russia, now Vilnius in Lithuania], July 1 [1812]. "Several unfortunate circumstances... have prevented me from writing to you since our departure from Eilsberg [now Lidsbark Warmiński in Poland] until our arrival in this city. Besides, OUR MARCHES HAVE BEEN SO STRONG THAT THE POST OFFICE HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO SEND ANY MAIL TO FRANCE. Oh what suffering...No sooner had I got rid of my ophthalmia than I developed an abscess on my right armpit, which I had to have incised, but you have to think of the pain I must have experienced during the work of inflammation and suppuration; I almost fell off my horse several times as a result of the extreme and HORRIBLE PAIN THAT I HID AS MUCH AS I COULD BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT THE EMPEROR TO KNOW THAT AT THE MOMENT OF A BATTLE I WOULD FIND MYSELF UNABLE TO DO MY DUTY, WHILE I WOULD PREFER TO DIE THAN TO LIE THERE. In the midst of these torments, I was informed that my crews, whom I had not seen for several days, were lost in the countryside. However, they found each other again, but a wheel on my caisson was watered by the artillery because Dubreil, in charge of driving it, had nonchalantly left it in the middle of the road. I was obliged, in the absence of any kind of help, to forge the irons myself to repair it and get the car back on its feet. To make matters worse, Mr Moreau de Danzik (your cousin), in order to oblige Mr de Menval [Napoleon I's secretary, Claude-François Méneval], whom he wanted to take... to the imperial quarter, lent him his carriage and, not knowing how to get it back, asked him to give it to me as a cadot on his behalf. I bought some bad horses, and wanted to get the two carriages on the road, but what misery, what pain and what difficulties!... COMPLETE SHEET TO BE FOUND IN THE CATALOG

I, the undersigned, certify that Mr. Guisse, Captain Adjutant of the place, has for fifteen months been employed under my orders in the fortress of Braunau, served with as much zeal as intelligence, and paying homage to the truth, I must say that the activity of this soldier has begged for a staff officer who would have been indispensable for the surveillance required by the war service of this place, if Captain Guisse had not devoted himself day and night to fulfilling his arduous duties. In addition to his wound (shrapnel in the right leg), he was shot in the left cheek on the day he was taken prisoner by the Prussians. He was shot again in the leg......... ". Historical background: Napoleon attached great importance to the possession of Braunau, "which can be considered one of the finest acquisitions of the army". He added in his correspondence: "I am delighted with the capture of Braunau, it is one of the keys to Austria". To lead this key position, he chose an energetic and prudent commander, General Merle. As soon as he was appointed governor of Braunau, General Merle had to complete his staff. Guisse played a major role in this organization, as an 1807 notice states that "general" Guisse, "commander of the Braunau position", had left the position on August 8, 1807, for Paris. BRAUNAU-BROUMOU BRÜNN-BRNO, Czechoslovak town in southern Moravia, 148 km northeast of Prague.

Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour (French, 1721-1764) Autograph, May 5, 1750 Bill giving orders to send a messenger to deliver a letter written by the Marquise de Pompadour to "M. d'Argenson" at the exit of the "Opéra", on the occasion of the premiere of Léandre et Héro, and to wait if there is a reply in return. One page in-12 oblong. (small lack, small tear). Framed. France, May 5, 1750. A handwritten note by Madame de Pompadour ordering a messenger to deliver a letter to Monsieur d'Argenson. Extremely rare handwritten bill written by the Marquise de Pompadour, favorite of King Louis XV, addressed to one of her "people" devoted to her service [Madame du Hausset, her chambermaid, Charles Jacques Collin, her confidant and first steward, or the Chevalier d'Hénin, her squire]: "Just now, send one of my people to deliver this letter to M. d'Argensson [sic]. Whomever you send need only go to one of the Opera gates. He will surely find M. d'Argensson's people waiting for their master. All he has to do is give the letter to M. d'Argensson on his way out of the Opéra, and he'll only stay there if M. d'Argensson tells him to." At the top of the bill a handwritten apostille probably from a member of his staff: "5 may 1750. Dépêché Lajamelle postillon". On May 5, 1750, "Léandre et Héro", an opera-tragédie composed by the Marquis de Brassac to a text by Le Franc de Pompignan, was performed for the first time at the Académie royale de musique, known "vulgarly" as the Opéra. The catalog of the Marquise de Pompadour's library mentions a copy of this opera, published on the occasion of this performance by Mme Boivin/M. Leclerc in Paris. Leclerc in Paris. René Louis de Voyer de Paulmy, Marquis d'Argenson, wrote a critical review of Brassac's tragic opera in his manuscript "Notices sur les œuvres de théâtre, depuis le théâtre grec jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle" [fol. 179], held by the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. In the spring of 1750, relations between the Marquise de Pompadour and de Voyer de Paulmy's brothers, René-Louis, Marquis d'Argenson, former Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and Marc-Pierre, Comte d'Argenson, Secretary of State for War, were detestable, even hateful. The Court was divided into two rival factions: on the one hand, the devout or "family party", around Queen Marie Leszczynska, several bishops, the king's children and a few minority government ministers, such as the comte d'Argenson, secretary of state for war; and on the other, the majority of the government, such as Saint Florentin (Maison du Roi), Machault (Garde des Sceaux), supported by the marquise de Pompadour, who exercised a veritable tutelage over the king's mind. Forced to resign his portfolio at Foreign Affairs in January 1747, René-Louis, Marquis d'Argenson wrote in his diary and memoirs: - "[March 1748] The marquise sells everything, even regiments.
