Late 19th century French school after Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1838), "Louise Brongniart (1772-1845)". White marble bust. Dimensions: total height 47 cm on a beige marble pedestal. The model for this charming bust of Louise Brongniart at the age of five, presented at the Salon of 1777 as a counterpart to that of her brother Alexandre Brongniart, is part of a body of work by Houdon on the theme of the child's face. The artist's models included his three daughters, Sabine, Anne-Ange and Claudine. Following the success of this type of portrait at the Salon, Houdon had several copies made in his studio in plaster, terracotta and marble, with variations in cut, costume and hairstyle. GREEK APULIAN RED-FIGURE BELL KRATER - Ca. Late 4th century BC. A red-figure bell krater, a vessel for mixing wine and water during symposium, crafted from terracotta and decorated with white and yellow details over black glaze. It features a large, deep body with a flared rim, supported by a stemmed round foot. Two upturned handles facilitate ease of handling. On Side A of the krater, a maenad takes centre stage, draped in a chiton fastened below her breasts by a belt. She holds a casket in her left hand and a mirror in her right. Adorned with a stephane in her hair, large earrings, a beaded necklace, and bracelets, the maenad stands facing a nude man. The latter, with a mantle thrown over his left arm, holds a tambourine in his outstretched right hand and a short staff or stick in his left. A wreath adorns his head. Side B features a pair of draped ephebi engaged in conversation. A laurel leaf wreath runs beneath the rim, stylised palmettes are below the handles framed by tongues and rays, and a wave pattern encircling the bottom of the vessel. This piece is accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, an international Cultural Heritage expert based in Florence, Italy. GREEK CANOSAN POTTERY VOLUTE KRATER DEPICTING THE LADY OF FASHION - Magna Graecia, South Italy, Ca. 300 BC. A volute krater crafted from terracotta, characterized by an egg-shaped body that tapers onto a stem, ultimately resting upon a flared foot. The vessel features two handles positioned on the sides. These handles take the distinctive form of volutes, with decorative details painted in white and red hues. The obverse of the krater reveals elaborate depictions of the "Lady of Fashion" on the main body and the neck. Each female head is illustrated facing left, adorned with a radiate stephane, a ribbon sakkos, earrings, and a necklace. On the reverse side, the representation of the "Lady of Fashion" is confined to the body, while the neck features a horizontal stylised motif. Head of Medusa by Carl ("Carlo") Kornhaas Relief sculptured ceramic (earthenware) tondo with colored painting and lustre glazes. Unique piece, shown in 1897 at the VII. International Art Exhibition in Munich. Original frame, label of the art exhibition in Munich 1897 with handwritten inscription, description and signature. Relief d. approx. 31.5 cm; frame approx. 46 cm x 46 cm. Kornhaas (1857 - 1931) lived and worked in Italy 1880/81-1895. In 1895 Kornhaas became a teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Karlsruhe, where he led a ceramics department and modeling class, 1898-1922 as professor. He participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, specializing in lustre glazes. Cited in: "Official catalog of the VII. Internationale Kunstausstellung im Kgl. Glaspalaste zu München 1897", p. 198, no. 115a-115k. A unique ceramic relief roundel with head of Medusa by Carl ("Carlo") Kornhaas. Painted earthenware with lustre glazes. Original frame.
