(...) Forgive me, dear Sir, for the poor spelling! Provenance: Archives of Denis Roche. ARCHIVES OF DENIS ROCHE (1868-1951) : Denis Roche (1868-1951) was a French writer and translator. Interested in the Russian language, he made a trip to St. Petersburg in 1898, where he met Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov and Ilya Repin. He translated the works of N. Leskov, I. Tourguéniev, I. Chmeliov, the young Vladimir Nabokov and others. In 1928, a 20-volume collection of Chekhov's translated works was published, and for one of them, Les Voisins, he was awarded the Prix Langlois by the Académie Française. Keen to introduce France to Russian culture and society, he wrote a number of short biographies, such as Un rtiste russe très expressif: .-. hmélkov or La Vie du Dr Haas, un bienfaiteur des prisonniers en Russie , and wrote numerous articles on Russian cultural events, just as relevant for Petersburg newspapers such as Starye Gody , which maintained his link with the country through the difficult times of war and civil war.
