Rahir, Catalogue d'une unique collection de volumes imprimés par les Elzevier, p. 369, no. 3131 - Willems, no. 2007. -Bergham, Supplément à l'ouvrage sur les Elzevier de M. Alphonse Willems, n° 549. Very fine edition from the presses of François Foppens of Brussels, annexed to the Elzevier collection, illustrated with a plate depicting the Ligue procession. La Satyre ménippée is the most famous libel of the late 16th century. It is a severe attack on the Estates General convened by the Duke of Mayenne, leader of the League, on January 26, 1593, to elect a Catholic king of France. It is considered one of the major events in Henri de Navarre's accession to the throne. This edition is rightly considered one of the most pleasing early editions of this text, due to the perfection of its printing. Foppens seems to have published three editions in 1664, and not two as Willems points out: two with errata, described by Bergham, and one without. The latter would correspond to the third edition, without the errata on page eight, with the buffalo head at the head of the notice to the reader, but including only the plate of the procession, without those of the charlatans. (A very fine copy in contemporary morocco. Some wear and tear. Slight light spotting)
