BENES EDVARD: (1884-1948)

BENES EDVARD: (1884-1948) Czech statesman who served as President of Czechoslovakia 1935-38, 1945-48 and also led the Czechoslovak government-in-exile from 1939-45 during World War II. A lengthy A.L.S., Dr Benes, eight pages (two bifolia), 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Klein, in Czech. The statesman replies to his correspondent´s letter and states, in part, ´First: About the celebrations with C.B. of which I have already written to you. I have also heard, that not too many guests have been there. As I read his invitation, I was not at all in agreement. Also considering your letter, one would have to be very careful. He writes that he belongs to the school of positive views, but does not precisely mention how he means it. In reality C.B. is very insecure and I have found he writes sometimes positively, but also negatively. Actually his position is rather negative. Well, in his last chapter he quotes his views to Science and Philosophy in a negative way. What he mentions about the positive German Radl is the truth. Today's positive views are dominated by the German philsophers Laas, Riehl, Jodl, Tönnis, Ziegler (by the way be careful of Uhlir, he makes propaganda for Jodl). Comparitively he is very different to the French. In France there is Neo-Positivism compared to Courtea (?) dominated by Robertyn (?). Else Durkes and his school Robertyn. This is again a totally different view. Even Simmel is committed to this view. Be aware, that especially Positivism is very different. In some views one thinks of confessional metaphysics. Krejci' feels the most for this positive view......´ Much of the letter remains untranslated. A couple of very minor, neat splits at the edges of a couple of folds, VG
