MASARYK TOMAS: (1850-1937) Czechoslovak politician and statesman who served as the first President of Czechoslovakia 1918-35. A good A.L.S., T. G. Masaryk, three pages, 8vo, Prague, 26th December 1902, to Professor Wiener. Masaryk writes to offer a literary plan to his correspondent, explaining that he has completed the first volume of a work on Russia entitled Russia and Europe: Studies in Russian Philosophy of History and Religion, which is an enlarged part of his Chicago lectures, continuing ´Could you find a translator (from the German) & perhaps revise the translation? The Chicago University Press, I hope, will publish the book & pay the translation out of the Crane Fund; at least I asked them to do it & hope they will approve of my plan´ and further explaining ´I would send the Germ. sheets as soon as the printing will begin; this might be in about 2-3 months. The book gives sketches of all the leading thinkers......I try to see Russia & its Revolution from the inward souls......(The next volume will contain Dostoyevskiy & his fight against nihilism, the third a view of the Russ. literature from Pushkin down to Gorky).....I imagine you have some pupils & that one of them could do the work & that yourself are interested in Russia to that degree, that I can dare to ask your help´.
