Angola, Congo Kinshasa. Beautiful Tchokwé face mask. H: 29 cm This PWO (woman) mask brings to life the first female ancestor in a matrilineal Tchokwé society. Beautiful scarification marks on the face, with a thin nasal wall. The half-open mouth reveals pointed teeth. The well-sculpted ears support two copper rings, and the headdress is made of walnut shell. This mask has a braided fiber net for fitting with the costume.

Ofika, statuette of the hanged man on his deathbed. 28 x 73 x 25 cm The Lilwa, an association of initiation rites, used to judge and sentence to hanging those guilty of breaking the imposed rules. These statues, presented lying on a litter, were displayed during initiation ceremonies.

Their content has changed, and they have become objects, natural or shaped, always surmounted by a statuette or effigy representing the ethnic group concerned. Pieces of leather, various amalgams surrounded by fabric, a representation of two small masks on the back, a goat's horn, etc.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Songye-Kiwebe ritual basket, 60 cm. Magic-religious basket featuring a beautiful Kiwébé-type male statuette with striated face and white kaolin. Two wooden sculptures, a rooster and a large bird with a missing beak, covered with a cloth amalgamated with a "magical" substance, two earthenware or wooden bottles also covered in the same way. A small monkey skull with cowrie shells inlaid in the eye sockets.

A RARE WHALE BONE MAORI TAIAHA 19TH CENTURY the slender tinana (body) flattened at one end with a smooth blade or rau, the finely carved upoko (head) with a face on each side both inlaid with pāua shell eyes and a protruding arero (tongue) carved in spirals, parrallel grooves and dog tooth pattern notches; unknown carver 147 cm long PROVENANCE:The Collection of the Late George Withers (1946-2023) NOTE: The taiaha is traditional Maori weapon most commonly found in wood but also more rarely in whale bone. Used ‘hand to hand’ it’s use as a parrying and striking weapon was synonymous with traditional forms of Maori combat. More commonly seen in whale bone is the kotiate (short hand club) Please note: if you are purchasing this lot it will require CITES certification to export it from the UK to a foreign country as it contains organic material.
