Masque mbangu Pende, République Démocratique du Congo Bois mi-dur, pigments noirs et blancs, fibres végétales H. : 30 cm. Masque Pende dit « de maladie », la bouche oblique, le nez asymétrique, et la division bipartite en blanc et noir, traduisant un combat intérieur contre la maladie, ou une forme de démence. Le porteur du masque, par sa gestuelle syncopée, en renforçait l’aspect satyrique. L’esthétique de ce type d’œuvre, connue très tôt au début du XXe siècle par l’élite intellectuelle, a profondément influencé la peinture moderne, cubiste notamment.
