Lot 4 - Anton Vincentius von Lyon (16th century) - A. LYON (16th), Shroud of Veronica, Woodcut Anton Vincentius von Lyon (16th century): St Peter and St Paul with Veronica's sweatcloth, 16th century, Woodcut Technique: Woodcut on Paper, mounted on Paper Date: 16th century Description: Woodcut published by A. Vincentius in Lyon; monogrammed "AV" in the image. "Brulliot II. No. 163 draws attention to a woodcut depicting the apostles Peter and Paul with a scarf, labelled with the letters AV in the first of the given panels. It hangs at the bottom centre on a small vine. The aforementioned author assumes that this is the vignette of the bookseller Anton Vincentius von Leyden, who ran his business around 1543. It is correct that this vignette appears in Vincentius' publishing works, but it is not Leyden but Lyon where the bookseller lived. A. Zanetti describes a similar vignette in the Cabinet Cicognare, which is very well drawn and produced with little use of lines. The copy from the Cabinet Cicognara comes from a book with Questiones theologicae, which were printed towards the end of the 15th century. Labelled on the verso in an unknown hand in lead "CB XVIII 306, 312 / Vincentius / Nagler I 1424". Keywords: 16th century, Renaissance, Religious, France, Size: Paper: 21,3 cm x 19,3 cm (8,4 x 7,6 in), additional specification: 21.3 x 19.3 cm, base: 29.5 x 26.5 cm

Date: c. 1744 Description: This portrait shows Johann Georg Bergmüller, one of the most influential Baroque painters in southern Germany, who portrayed himself here and provided the model for this mezzotint. Born into a Swabian family of carpenters, Bergmüller learnt his father's trade and was already involved in the construction of the electoral residence in Türkheim as a boy. Impressed by his artistic talent, Duke Maximilian Philipp took the young Bergmüller in and recommended him for training with the Munich court painter Johann Andreas Wolff. After his first major commissions and a study trip to the Netherlands, he settled in Augsburg in 1712, from where he produced numerous Baroque altarpiece designs and coordinated the fresco painting of many southern German churches as well as secular house façades. In addition, the versatile artist was involved in art theoretical studies and published his own work on the theory of human proportions. In order to advertise widely and earn additional income, he worked as a draughtsman for graphic prints, including the self-portrait engraved by the renowned mezzotint artist Johann Jakob Haid. The composition of the portrait combines the depiction of the artist with important attributes of his character, such as the references to faith and church service, his proportion-theoretical work and individual painting tools, with Bergmüller's own way of constellating figures, emphasising important people and aspects through eye relationships and gestures. Lot 55 - Georg Philipp Rugendas (1666 Augsburg - 1742 ibid.) - G. RUGENDAS (1666-1742), Nine soldier studies, around 1700, Pencil Georg Philipp Rugendas (1666 Augsburg - 1742 ibid.): Nine soldier studies, c. 1700, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Watermark: Partially visible. Undeterminable watermark Date: Inscription: Upper left inscribed by another person: "ax". Date: c. 1700 Description: Georg Philipp Rugendas from Augsburg presents nine soldiers in various poses and performing a variety of tasks, carefully arranged next to each other in two rows of five and four soldiers. They stand with their legs apart, lean against a wall or have their rifles shouldered. These are delicate graphite studies of remarkable presence, which derive their significance from the fact that they are studies from nature. Rugendas, who in Augsburg - the city was occupied in 1703/04 - directly experienced the military conflicts during the War of the Spanish Succession, observed soldiers at work in the various camps. Rugendas' later biographer Johann Caspar Füssli reports that he "had the advantage" of "now seeing with his own eyes what had previously been merely idealised."The sheet impressively illustrates that it is a prerequisite for what Füssli described as "the ideal", which "gradually became an idea from the true visible of nature".The "true visibility of nature" is revealed in the studies that Rugendas used to prepare his paintings: "He made a large number of regular drawings based on real examples, which he often incorporated into his paintings," writes Füssli. The sheet belongs to a whole series of such "regular drawings" with depictions of soldiers, which are mainly in the art collections of the city of Augsburg, but also in Nuremberg, Washington and Sacramento. The Augsburg drawings are labelled "ax" at the top left, suggesting that they were once part of the same collection - probably the artist's estate. Our sheet also belongs to this group and is also labelled "ax" at the top left. The sheets served Rugendas as a kind of stock of ideas for his battle scenes and depictions of soldiers' lives; he used them for elaborate drawings, prints and paintings. For many of these studies, a link to paintings and prints has been established - although this has yet to be proven for the sheet on offer. The regularity in which the soldiers are arranged on the sheet also suggests a graphic realisation, which Rugendas had obviously already planned, but which was only tackled by his great-grandson Johann Lorenz Rugendas the Younger at the beginning of the 19th century: In two series - Etude des Attidudes et Postures de l'Homme and Zerschiedene Vorstellungen oder Actionen, Rugendas presented a total of eleven of his great-grandfather's sketch sheets in etchings. (Text: Peter Prange) Keywords: Soldiers, rifles, figure study, positions, emplacements, study sheet., 18th century, Baroque, Military, Germany, Size: Paper: 14,5 cm x 21,6 cm (5,7 x 8,5 in)

Lot 69 - Louis François Cassas (1756 Azay-le-Ferron - 1827 Versailles) - L. CASSAS (1756-1827), Ruins at the Macellum of Pozzuoli, 1784, Etching Louis François Cassas (1756 Azay-le-Ferron - 1827 Versailles): Architectural fragments at the Macellum of Pozzuoli, 1784, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "L. F. Cassas 1784". Lower middle inscribed in the printing plate: "Vue pres de Pouzzoles.". Date: 1784 Description: Following the example of many famous contemporaries, the French draughtsman Louis François Cassas also embarked on an educational journey to Italy from 1779. For around four years, he travelled to the classic destinations of an artistic and scholarly Grand Tour, which he was one of the first to extend beyond Italy. During this time, he captured the picturesque landscapes, the remarkable architecture and the lives of the people in these places in numerous drawings and sketches. In Naples, he met a group of like-minded artists who were commissioned by Jean-Claude Richard, Abbé de Saint-Non, to produce drawings to illustrate the multi-volume work Voyage pittoresque ou description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile. Cassas was then also asked to travel to Sicily and produce sketches that were to be engraved for the Abbé's work. In the Voyage pittoresque, however, only eight of Cassas' drawings are ultimately printed, although he must have submitted a significantly higher number. The present sheet, which shows signs of a provisional, as yet unfinished work without correct labelling, particularly in the lower section, could have been created in this context, but was ultimately rejected. It is also known that Cassas gave some of his drawings to the Piranesi Chalcography in Paris around 1801, where similar depictions with romantic views of ruins were offered for sale engraved and coloured. In both cases, the present sheet can probably be regarded as a trial proof in the process of publishing Cassas' impressions of his first journey to Italy. Lot 85 - William Baillie (1723 Killbride (Carlow) - 1810 London) after Nathaniel Hone (1718 - 1730 ) - W. BAILLIE (*1723) after HONE (*1718), Self-portrait, 1783, Copper engraving William Baillie (1723 Killbride (Carlow) - 1810 London) after Nathaniel Hone (1718 - 1730 ): Self-portrait, after the painting by Nathaniel Hone, 1783, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on China paper, rolled-on on Paper Inscription: Signed in the printing plate: "William Baillie". Date: 1783 Description: During his lifetime, after his career in the army, William Baillie was particularly known for his expertise in the field of fine art. As an advisor and dealer, he looked after the collections of the Earl of Bute and Lord Liverpool. His enthusiasm for printmaking techniques, which he taught himself for the most part, probably helped him on his way to becoming a respected connoisseur. He was particularly fond of Rembrandt and copied many of the Dutchman's works, thus, together with his friend Nathaniel Hone, greatly increasing Rembrandt's fame, especially in England. Our self-portrait, engraved by Baillie after his friend Hone's painting, is not only an expression of friendship, but also of Rembrandt's enthusiasm. It reveals not only the highly skilful mastery of printmaking technique, but also Rembrandt's strong influence on both artists. For example, Hone quoted the hat and the fur-trimmed coat for the portrait almost verbatim from Rembrandt's etching Portrait of Cornelis Anslo. In his print, Baillie finally fitted the painting into an oval frame, whereby the hand still visible in the painting has disappeared and the effect becomes more gravitational. The integration of the curtain, which the two putti open in front of Baillie's quasi-immortalised portrait, is certainly to be understood as an homage to Rembrandt's Holy Family with the Curtain or Vermeer's Girl Reading a Letter.
