Jacques GAMELIN was a French painter, draughtsman, engraver and etcher of early classicism. Gamelin first studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Toulouse under Jean-Pierre Rivalz. His artistic training continued in Paris and Rome, where he worked as a professor at the Accademia di San Luca from 1771. One year later, Pope Clement XIV appointed him court painter. Gamelin also met the painter Anton Raphael Mengs in Rome.
