At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Augu. Carache in. Cab. du Roy". Upper left numbered in the printing plate: "105". Date: 18th century Description: Reclining cat, to the right. Etching, after Agostino Carracci (1557 Bologna-Parma 1602). The depiction shows an old cat that has been tested in fights, the mutilated ear bears witness to this. Comte de Caylus was an art collector and theorist, patron and etcher (dilettante).... Above all, he deserves credit for spreading the appreciation of old master drawings in countless etchings, which he became familiar with through his friendship with connoisseurs and artists such as Mariette, Crozat, Coypel and his drawing teacher Watteau. He published large series after drawings by Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, Carracci, after the 10 Louvre drawings on the History of Joseph previously attributed to Rembrandt, etc." (Thieme-Becker, vol.
