After studying violin in Bordeaux, he moved to Paris, where he entered the Conservatoire in 1830. A pupil of Reicha (composition) and Habenek (violin), he was awarded second prize in 1832, enabling him to become second violinist at the Opéra. This position, which he held until 1838, and his qualities as a melodist led him to turn to the opera stage. His grand opera Jeanne la Folle (1848) was unsuccessful, and he continued to compose mainly semi-characteristic music, writing over twenty comic operas in all. La Perruche (1840), la Promise (1854) and above all la Fanchonnette (1856) were highly successful, while Code noir (1842) and Gibby la Cornemuse (1846) were considered his best operatic works. Clapisson also made a name for himself with over two hundred songs, some of which were popularized by texts by Béranger, and with a collection of musical instruments that enriched the Conservatoire Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in Paris and London.
