Lot 321 - AUBUSSON FABRICS, late 17th-early 18th century Esther presents herself to King Ahasuerus In wool and silk; Esther, followed by two maids, is shown on the right, kneeling at the foot of the richly ornamented throne on which Ahasuerus sits, holding out to her the golden scepter; the imitation frame border has probably been added; wear, old restorations and reweaving, reduced in height and probably in width. An Aubusson Biblical tapestry, late 17th-early 18th century By imploring the king's help, Esther succeeds in thwarting Haman's plan to have the Jews of Ahasuerus' kingdom murdered. The subject, taken from the Old Testament book of Esther, was a great success with private clients, and the hanging was woven several times in the workshops of the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson. The chosen model re-uses the composition of Esther before Ahasuerus engraved by Jean Le Clerc (late 16th-early 17th century). This original composition simultaneously depicts Esther's supplication and the illness of the king, depicted on the left in the background.

A pair of Louis XV carved walnut fauteuils a la reine, attributed to Pierre Nogaret This pair of armchairs is characteristic both in technique and style of the production of Lyon's best-known carpenter: Pierre Nogaret (1718-1771). The walnut is natural and simply waxed, the moldings sinuous, strongly marked and nicely softened by the use of naturalistic flowers. The wide-open, highly curved arm brackets are the master's trademark. Always of the highest quality, his work enabled him to rival the best craftsmen in the capital.

A Louis XV style gilt-bronze mounted and satinwood bureau plat, after the model by Nicolas Pierre Severin Our elegant flat desk, with its monumental proportions, is a replica of the famous Abbé Terray desk, kept at the Musée du Louvre since 1924 (inv. OA 7805). The original was made around 1760 for Louis XV's last Controller General of Finances, and is stamped by Nicolas Pierre Severin, Master in 1757. Better known for his work as a restorer, some authors have speculated that he acted as restorer and that the desk is the work of Joseph Baumhauer. This model enjoyed great success in the 19th century, as evidenced by the stamped examples produced by the leading cabinetmakers of the day, including Henri Dasson, Alfred Beurdeley, Paul Sormani and Gervais Durand. Rare on the market, among the latest examples to come up for sale in recent years: - Christie's Paris, April 23, 2013, lot 575 (signed Sormani and dated 1881) ; - Sotheby's New York, April 22, 2010, lot 128 (signed Beurdeley); - Sotheby's New York, April 14, 2016, lot 614 (signed E. Laurent Rue Charonne). It should be noted that all these copies are smaller than ours, which is the same size as the original copy in the Louvre.

The composition is enlivened by the intersecting vertical and oblique planes of the tree trunks, to which the parallel obliques formed by the flute and shepherd's crook respond. A terracotta group depicting a Chinese man playing music, Jean Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808), 1786 From the end of the 17th century, the taste for the Far East (India, China and Japan) was highly developed in Europe, and the passion for chinoiserie spread to all the great interiors. It was certainly Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808), one of the most prolific artists of the Chinese manner, with his book of Chinese ornaments published in 1755, who facilitated the creation and artistic development of the Chinese taste in Europe. The artist combined familiar domestic scenes with foreign exoticism. As the motifs were quite simple, they could easily be applied to decorative art objects. During his lifetime and after his death, his designs were used to create ceramics, silverware, sculptures, tapestries and textiles. The sculpture shown here is a rare one, signed and dated by Jean-Baptiste Pillement. We are aware of another terracotta group (apparently unsigned) featuring a Chinese man sitting on a bench and singing, which is artistically and stylistically very similar to our terracotta (Koller Auktionen, Zürich, lot 1094, 22.09.2022).

In addition to the influence of antiquity, Julliard was also influenced by the Nordic painters he had discovered in the studio of his master François Boucher. The young shepherd reclining in the foreground is strikingly similar to some of Abraham Bloemaert's figures. Several known weavings, including one in the Hermitage Museum, one in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (Cologne), one on display at the Charlieu town hall, and a fragment in the Musée Magnin (Dijon).
