I don't just paint the human body, I paint the human feelings covered in flesh' There is an engaging open-ended narrative in Brennan's paintings that allows the viewer to be suspended in a dreamlike reality. Lot 60 - Alfred Pierre Noël Cazaubon (1895-1979) Orpheus raising his lyre Circa 1940 Signed CAZAUBON on the terrace Large figure in painted plaster imitating bronze Getekend CAZAUBON op het terras Grote figuur in gips geschilderd in imitatie van brons Signed CAZAUBON on the terrace Large figure in plaster painted in imitation of bronze 287 x 75 x 58 cm (112.9 x 29.5 x 22.8 in) Footnotes: Provenance Acquired in Paris in the 1970s by the current owner We have little information on Pierre Cazaubon (1885-1979). He was born in Pau and trained in the studio of Joseph Alexandre and Ernest Gabard (1879-1957). He exhibited regularly at the Société des amis des Arts de Pau. He continued his training in Paris with Injalbert (1845-1933). Then, between 1927 and 1928, he spent some time in America, where he created the bas-reliefs for Saint John's Church in New York and the Palais des Congrès in Havana. On his return to Paris in 1929, he was made a member of the Salon d'Automne with the Bernheim de Villier prize, and exhibited there for the first time alongside artists such as Bugatti, Maillol, Pompom and Dejean. His sculpture 'Porteuse d'eau' (Water Bearer), placed at the entrance to Room IV, attracted considerable attention and was considered a revelation for its 'qualities of attentive simplicity and insinuating, gentle, but perfectly accurate modelling' (loc. cit., Le Temps, 5 November 1929). He then regularly exhibited sculptures in different materials, stone, bronze and plaster at the Salon d'Automne. He won awards at the 1930 and 1937 Universal Exhibitions, and in 1947 won a gold medal in the monumental art category at the Exposition internationale de l'habitation et de l'urbanisme at the Grand Palais. We are also aware of a monumental bronze sculpture representing Heraklès choking a snake that was sold at the Pau-Pyrénées auction house, Etude Gestas, on 17 June 2000. The French government commissioned several sculptures from him, so that he is relatively well represented in French public collections (Musée de Pau, Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, Théâtre National de Chaillot, Centre National des Arts Plastiques, etc). Pierre Cazaubon's works are typical of the 1930s period and are strongly inspired by Maillol and Bourdelle. Like Bourdelle, he sought to give his sculptures a monumental dimension. The figure shown here is a fine example of this, and is almost certainly the plaster design for the sumptuous bronze of the same dimensions cast by Attilio Valsuani (active 1927-1960) now in the Nicolas Bourriaud gallery in Paris Comparative literatures F. This terracotta of the River God is a reduction of a famous monumental ancient marble found in 1512, and sculpted in Hadrian's time (117-138) as a counterpart to the Nile. These much-admired marbles were included in the Roman antiquities ceded to Napoleon in 1803, to be displayed in the Salle des Fleuves in the Musée Central des Arts in Paris In seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France, there was a real craze for bronze, marble and terracotta reductions based on Antiquities Comparative literatures F. For this illustrated edition, Jean Cocteau appears here only as the illustrator of the work and not as its author. He acknowledges his authorship half-heartedly in a text reproduced in facsimile concerning the illustration: 'It has been said that Le Livre blanc was my work. I suppose that's why you asked me to illustrate it, and why I agreed [...] But whatever good I think of this book -- if it were mine -- I wouldn't want to sign it because it would take the form of an autobiography, and I reserve the right to write my own, which is even more singular. So I'm content to give my stamp of approval to this anonymous effort to clear a field that has remained too uncultivated. May 1930. At this time Orphée was being staged in Paris, he had an exhibition of artistic 'constructions', and Stravinsky's Oedipus rex with its Cocteau libretto would soon be premiered - all whilst he was suffering from an opium addiction The upper cover bears Cocteau's sketch of a book cover entitled 'Opéra - travail poétique de 1925-1926', whilst the notes inside include: apparent drafts of his poem 'L'Hôtel'; notes for 'Les Voleurs d'enfants' and 'Le Paquet rouge'; prose comments on the Revolution, Robespierre and the Ancien régime; his famous quip 'Victor Hugo était un fou qui se croyait Victor Hugo'; 'Etonnante découverte de Lord Carnaval'; mentions of Oscar Wilde, Picasso, Stravinsky, Rimbaud, and other subjects. Several of the poems present here were published as part of Cocteau's collection Opéra, oeuvres poétiques 1925-1927, in 1927. Also within the sketchbook are various drawings: a surreal neoclassical bust juxtaposed with cyclopic heads, a decapitated male nude (possibly John the Baptist with multiple Salomes), skeletons, a semi-clad figure holding an object at arm's length, several partial interiors (probably set designs), sailors alongside urinals, and two dissected figures labelled 'Les Atrides'. In 1949, whilst filming Les Enfants terribles, he met Francine Weisweiller who had recently bought the house in Cap Ferrat. She invited him to visit, and he almost immediately started decorating the home; by late July 1950, he writes 'Je termine les murs de Santo Sospir'. Cocteau returned to the villa every summer and stayed there for almost eleven years. Included in the lot are three photographs Cocteau sent to Lulu of Francine with his lover and adopted son Edouard Dermit ('Doudou') on a boat, jokingly described as an 'ideal couple'. In another letter he recounts an unsuccessful evening with Francine - 'nous avons perdu nos chemises au Casino de Nice'. By 1961, coinciding with the end of our correspondence, relations between Francine and Cocteau cooled as she began a relationship with the writer and screenwriter Henri Viard Elsewhere, the letters demonstrate Cocteau's sensitivity to the practice of translation: both of his work into English, where he favoured Mary Hoeck as translator and mocks someone trying to translate the name Heurtebise in parts ('c'est comme si on traduisait Coc- par le mot Coq, et -teau par le mot tôt'), as well as his translations of the work of others (describing in 1950 Un tramway nommé Désir as his only translation 'de l'américain' into French, but later touching on his French adaptation of Jerome Kilty's Dear Liar) On the subject of his films, Cocteau awaits the reaction to Les Enfants terribles (released 1950) - 'si le film n'a pas de succès ca ne sera la faute de personne' - and is relieved when 'le film a triomphé en Allemagne et marche à New York'. More than once, he complains about the quality of prints; he considers selling an option on La Machine infernale; he is excited about the prospect of an event in Berlin to celebrate the anniversary of Orphée; and he regrets not being able to find a cameo role, presumably in Le Testament d'Orphée, for Madeleine Sologne who had starred in L'eternal retour. Perhaps the main subject matter of the letters, however, is Cocteau's theatrical work. There is much on his play Bacchus, set during the Swiss Reformation: he asks Lulu to obtain a book to help in his research on the subject, and expresses many doubts about staging it at the Théâtre National Populaire. Its director Jean Vilar, he complains, has big dreams but does not have the right ideas for Bacchus. The theatre itself at the Palais de Chaillot is unsuitable

He also taught at the same school from 1993 to 1995. Since 1991, he has received several awards, including the Ludwig Collection prize, the Herrmann-Lipot prize in 1995 and the Salon d'Automne prize in 1996. An accomplished master with the materials of bronze and marble, Taubert's powerful, emblematic sculptures have a hauntingly epic form. He draws his inspiration from archaic Greek statuary, in particular the figures Kouros and Kore (from the ancient Greek κοῦρος, kouros 'young man' and 'young girl') from the sanctuary of Apollo at Delos. The two bronze figures presented here, Le Petit and Le Grand, are part of the Idole series he created in 1993 and produced in bronze in 1999 in a limited edition of just 5. They are a marvellous reflection of ancient inspiration, and are also stylistically imbued with a neo-Egyptian influence. The proportions are authentic, highly architectural and reveal a perfect mastery of the classical and modern idiom. An artist and sculptor of international renown, his works have been widely exhibited throughout the world. His monumental commissions and highly recognisable sculptural forms have been placed in numerous private and public collections, and a museum dedicated to his work can be found in his native Hungary in Budapest (Taubert Museum).
