Lot 101 - (1523). BIBLE. BIBLIA CUM SUMMARUM APPARATU PLENO... Paris, Jean Prevel, April 11, 1523. Fort in-8, [79]-1bl.-480 leaves, marbled basane, ornate ribbed spine (18th century binding). Fine 2-column printing in small Gothic type by the bookseller Jacques Prevel of Rouen, who moved to Paris and practiced until 1528. Text annotated by Alberto Castello. This unusual edition features a large hors-texte woodcut divided into six squares showing the days of the world's creation, and 3 vignettes (Letter of St. Jerome, Genesis and Proverbs). Stamp on title and a few pages, light rings, tear with a few letters missing from corner of folio 419, missing headpieces, spines split. (USTC 145577).

Lot 102 - (1523). ROLEWINCK (Werner). FASCICULUS TEMPORUM. Paris, Jehan Petit, 1523. In-8 of [6]-94 leaves, velin souple (contemporary binding). A German monk born in Laer (Westphalia) in 1425 and who died in Cologne in 1502, Rolewinck is the author of numerous theological writings. His Fasciculus Temporum is a manual of universal history that enjoyed extreme vogue for half a century; in this edition, historical events extend to 1521. It is illustrated with NUMEROUS CIRCULAR TABLES AND VARIOUS VIEWS, mainly of cities, engraved on wood (Noah's Ark, monsters, mermaids, Venice, Athens, Troy on fire, Jerusalem, Rome...); THESE WOOD ENGRAVINGS ARE THE EARLIEST OF THE GENRE. The last leaf with a little worm work is doubled (lacking the printer's mark?), scattered foxing a small tear without missing (USTC 181884, gives the date 1518).

Lot 103 - (1523). STRABON. GEOGRAPHICORUM COMMENTRARII. Basel, Valenti Curio, 1523. In-folio of [36]-566-[2] pages, brown calf, boards stamped with wide borders (contemporary binding). Strabon's famous geography, edited by Conrad Heresbach (1496-1576), one of the first and most important scientific treatises on historical geography, and the first attempt at a unified treatise on geographical knowledge. Illustrations include a large pictorial title, 2 superb frames by Jacob Faber and large initials by Hans Holbein showing putti or children at play. Minor damage to binding, lacking at top and bottom of spine, a good copy despite 2 circular cuts to title (replaced by 2 old photographs). (USTC 700257, title frame diff.). Bookplate with the arms of the House of Savoy and the motto FFRT and FERT.

Lot 104 - (1523). VINCENT FERRIER. DISTINCTIONES. AUREI SERMONES - EXPOSITIO DECEM PRECEPTORUM. Lyon, Denys de Harsy for Simon Vincent, October 8, 1523. 2 parts bound in 1 vol. in-8 of [12]-311-[1] leaves and [30] unencrypted leaves, vellum (period binding). Gothic Lyonnais edition of the sermons of Saint Vincent Ferrier (1350-1419), procured by Pierre de Tardito, a monk from Chambéry and confessor to the Duke of Savoy. The famous preacher from Valence owed his immense popularity to his simple, vivid and sometimes even trivial language, and crowds were fond of his almost anecdotal sermons. Vincent Ferrier knew several languages and delivered his sermons in France, Italy, Germany and Spain, always making a vivid impression on the masses by peppering his sermons with anecdotes taken from here and there. The reunion of the 2 parts is rare. The first part is adorned with a handsome title in red and black, a full-page woodcut on the verso depicting the birth of Eve by a pond (found in the second part), and on the last folio a compartmented woodcut of the creation of the world. Paris, Pierre Vidoue for François Regnault, January 1524. In-8 of 299 leaves, half black basane (19th century binding). Beautifully framed title with François Regnault's mark. Jean Clérée, a Dominican preacher born in Coutances in 1455, was confessor to Louis XIII. Recent handwritten annotations in pencil. Scattered light rings and stains. A modest copy (USTC 184388, no ex.).

Lot 106 - (1524). MONTE ROCHER (Guy de). MANIPULUS CURATORUM, 178. Paris, Nicolas de la Barre, 1524. In-16 of 128 (misc. 135)-(3] leaves, stiff vellum (19th century binding). Guy de Montrocher was a French priest and jurist active around 1331, best known for his often-copied Manipulus Curatorum (Curate's Manual) for parish priests, which only became obsolete when the Council of Trent created the Roman catechism in 1566. Edition not listed in the ICP. Small loss at the corner of one leaf, scattered rings.

Lyon, Sébastien Gryphe, 1524. 2 parts of 50 and 106 leaves, in one folio volume, muted boards (period binding). "FIRST DATE IMPRINT BY SEBASTIEN GRYPHE KNOWN TO THIS DAY" (Baudrier). It is impeccably printed on 2 columns in Gothic type with the typefaces, vignettes, ornate letters and framing of the Compagnie des libraires de Lyon. These 2 parts (out of 9 listed) are incomplete, namely: 1. Prima Panor, in secundum decret. 50 leaves numbered 179 to 228. 2. Secunda Panor. in secundum decret. 106 leaves numbered from 1 to 106. Some pages browned, rings, stamps (Baudrier VIII, 39).

(Rome, Ludovico degli Arrighi Vicentino, spring 1524) 4 unnumbered leaves in-8, modern blue cloth cover. Tribute to Clement VII, probably printed shortly after his election to the Holy See on November 18, 1523. Charming booklet, printed in the Sophonisba variant Sophonisba variant of the first Cancellaresca, may well have inaugurated Arrighi's Arrighi's association with Trissino. Light rings at the bottom of the leaves.

First edition of this translation by Franc. Lucio de Castel Durante and second illustrated edition in Italian. It is lavishly decorated with 136 REMARKABLE woodcut FIGURES; invention of fire, construction of huts or machines for pulling heavy loads, hydraulic machines, Roman theaters, signs of the zodiac and even Archimedes experimenting with his inescapable principle, all strongly inspired by the first illustrated Venetian edition of 1511. Beautiful engraved title printed in red and set in a rich Renaissance frame. Title doubled, 8th table leaf missing (USTC 863685, 37 copies) (Mortimer, Italian 545).

Venice, (Gregorio de Gregori), March 11, 1524. Small in-8 of [8]-71 leaves, covered vellum, gilt fillets, laces (modern pastiche binding). Second edition, published 3 years after the original, of this treatise on military art. The title is set in a frame of war scenes, followed by 10 FULL-PAGE ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS ON WOOD, 11 IN TEXT, another at the beginning showing fireworks, the others showing siege engines, bastions, mines, rams, bridges, bellows and diving equipment and 26 diagrams of battle formations. Lot 111 - (1525). ADRIEN VI. QUESTIONES IN QUARTUM SENTENTIARUM: PRESERTIM CIRCA SACRAMENTA, UBI SACRAMENTORUM MATERIA EXACTISSIME TRACTATUR. (Paris), Jean Cornillau and Hémon Le Fèvre, 1525. In-4° of 139-[1] leaves, cold-stamped calf (contemporary binding). Gothic printing on 2 columns with title framed by figures and animals. The commentaries of Adrian VI (1459-1523), the only pope from the Netherlands, on the 4 books of Pierre Lombard's sentences were first published in 1516 without the author's knowledge, as Badius explains in his preface to J. Dassonville. Rare work by Hémon Le Fèvre, a printer and bookseller active in Paris from 1509 to 1525. Light rings, a few browned pages, very damaged binding (USTC 145717, 2 copies).

Lot 112 - (1526). BIBLIA. TEXTUS BIBLIAE M.D.XXVI. BIBLIA CUM CONCORDANTIIS VETERIS ET NOVI TESTAMENTI ET SACRORUM CANONUM. Lyon, Jacques Maréchal, 1526. Large 2-column gothic folio of [14]-296-[24] leaves, brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated (18th century binding). Famous Bible known by the name of its publisher as the "Bible de Jacques Maréchal", with historical annotations by Alberto Castellano. Its splendid illustration includes a large woodcut of the creation of the world with Christ standing, drawn by Jean Siber, another of the Annunciation by Hans Sprenkdé and another depicting Solomon by G. Leroy. This is followed by more than 100 BOIS PLACES WITH FRAMES in the text, drawn by Guillaume II Le Roy. The title printed in red and black has unfortunately been amputated from the wood of Saint Jerome. Marginal rings on first and last leaves, stain on leaf 40, some repaired, numerous period annotations. Ex-libris Carolus Meurisse dated 1690 (USTC 158606, 21 copies) (Baudrier XI, 423).

Lot 113 - (1526). CHARTIER (Alain). LES FAICTZ ET DICTZ DE FEU DE BONNE MEMOIRE Maistre Alain Chartier en son vivant Secrétaire du feu roy Charles septième du nom... Paris, Galliot du Pré, 1526. Small gothic folio of [6]-126 (misc. 124) leaves-1 p., glazed fawn calf, triple gilt frame, gilt A.A. on the covers, gilt edges (19th century binding). VERY RARE EDITION, the first to feature the Débat du gras et du Maigre. It opens with a handsome historiated title letter and is decorated with a large woodcut on the first leaf showing the author at work in his library, and another, on leaf 59, of a reader in the pulpit. The latter is preceded by an out-of-text genealogical table on royal descent from Saint Louis to Edward of England. The Faitctz et dictz by Alain Chartier (1385-1430) include the Curial, which deals with courtly manners, the Quagrilogue, considered a masterpiece of medieval political literature, and several verse pieces, the réveille-matin, the bréviaire des nobles, the livre des quatre dames, the hospital d'amours, les demandes et réponses d'amours.... and lastly the Débat du Gras et du Maigre, a sort of joust between two knights who have had different successes in love: one is fat and the other thin and emaciated. Remarkable 2-column Gothic printing, with good margins. Dry stamp of the bookseller Gancia, Brighton, on the flyleaf. Last leaf appears to be facsimile, otherwise from another copy and excessively washed. Spine rebacked. Restorations to hinges perfectly executed at the time. From the A. Audenet library. In-folio of [20]-142 (misc. 124) pages, stiff vellum (19th century binding). Written at the request of Saint Augustine, this work is the first attempt at a history of the world. It is a census of human calamities, in date order from the creation of the world to 417 (famines, storms, fires, plagues...). The title is beautifully framed with 4 large woodcuts depicting the calamities, another with the figures of Agrippa and Agrippina at the head, and large pictorial lettering by Anton Woesam. Light rings (USTC 683274).

Lot 115 - (1526-1527). PEROTTUS (Nic.). CORNUCOPIAE SIVE LINGUAE LATINAE COMMENTARI... Venice, Aldus, 1526 and 1527. In-folio of [81]-1bl. leaves, 1436 columns-[14] leaves, havana half-basin, ribbed spine decorated with gilded Aldine irons (modern binding). Fine Aldine edition in accordance with Renouard's collation. Brought up in Bologna by the famous Vittorio de Feltré, Perroti went on to study Greek at the house of Cardinal Bessarion, and was appointed bishop of Siponto in 1458. His commentaries dedicated to the Duke of Urbino comprise 147 chapters of varying length on a wide variety of subjects (e.g., the book of spectacles or Martial's epigrams). The general index of all these writings has no fewer than 750 columns. 2 windows with soiled title, otherwise a fine, fresh copy. (Renouard, p. 103) (USTC, 847597).

In-12 gothic of 133 (badly chiffr)-[3] sheets, half-basane, decorated smooth back (binding of the XIX°). Rare edition of the Sunday sermons of Nicolas de Hacqueville, doctor of theology and Franciscan preacher active towards the end of the 13th century. The text was edited by theologians Jean Quentin and Louis Vasseur. Gothic printing in small type on 2 columns. The title is decorated with the decorative border of the printer Simon Vincent. Damage to spine (Ed. unknown in catalogs consulted).

In-folio of [16]-281-1bl. leaves, calf, gilt frames on boards with central gilt motif, ribbed spine, gilt edges (period binding). Beautifully printed first edition of the first French translation of Thucydides by Claude de Seyssel (1450-1520), edited by Jacques Colin. In this edition, the prologue by Laurent Valla is preceded by a short poem by Clément Marot. The title is beautifully framed. Lot 118 - (1527). THUCYDIDE. [L'HISTOIRE DE LA GUERRE, QUI FUT ENTRE LES PELOPONNESIENS ET ATHENIENS], translatée en langue francoyse par feu Messire Claude de Seyssel. Paris, Josse Bade, August 10, 1527. In-folio of [15 (of 16)]-281 leaves, half-velin with corners (19th century binding). ORIGINAL EDITION OF THE FIRST FRENCH TRANSLATION by Claude de Seyssel from the Latin text given by Laurent Valla. The famous bishop of Marseille offered his work to Louis XII, and the translation remained in manuscript in the royal library for a long time. It was by order of François 1er that his secretary Jacques Colin published it in 1527. Elegant publication by Josse Bade, printed in round letters and embellished with numerous sifted-ground initials. The title page is missing (we enclose a recent copy), a copy in fine condition with wide margins. (Brunet, V, 848).

Lot 119 - (1527-28). VERGILE. OPERA VERGILIANA. Lyon, Jacques Mareschal, August 19, 1527. Fort in-folio in 2 parts of [8]-161-1bl. and [6]-261 (mal chiffr. 262) leaves, half tan basane, spine ornate (modern binding). Superb and rare edition of Virgil's works printed in Lyon by Jacques Maréchal dit Roland in 1517. Edited by G. Pietro Valériano with notes by Béroalde and Bade, it features a handsome title printed in red and black in a large woodcut frame and numerous initials on a foliage background. It is also illustrated with some 200 VIGNETTES ENGRAVED ON WOOD after Sébastien Brandt. Abundant commentary surrounds the text. The collation is identical to that given by Adams, with the titles dated 1528. Half of folio 3 is missing. Numerous old handwritten annotations, scattered stains (Baudrier XI, 429/30, different coll.) (USTC 155738) (Adams V, 473).

Lot 120 - (1528). DATI (Agostino). ELEGANTIE AUGUSTINI DATHI SENENSIS OPUSCULUM IN ELEGANTIARUM PRECEPTA. CUM JODOCI CLICHTOVE. ET JODOCI BADII ASCENSII COMMENTARII. Lyon, Jacques Myt, February 25, 1508, colophon, title dated 1528. In-8 gothic folio of 112 leaves, brown calf, cold framing on the boards with gilded flowers at the corners (modern binding). Agostino Dati (1420-1478), philosopher, theologian, historian, linguist and professor in Siena, opened a school of rhetoric in Siena, where he gave lectures illustrating the works of the classical poets. His manual of rhetoric, first published in 1470, contains in this Lyon edition - which appears to be unknown - the commentaries of Josse Clichtove and Josse Badius, illustrated with 7 woodcuts in the text, 1 of which is repeated. Title consolidated with its red and green painted frame, st. leaves restored, marginal handwritten annotations.

Lot 121 - (1528). (BIBLE). PRECATIONES ALIQUOT CELEBRIORES...Ac in studiosorum gratiam lingua Hebraica, Graeca et Latina... Lyon, Sébastien Gryphe, 1528. In-16 of 88 uncounted leaves, stiff vellum (19th century binding). Extremely rare essay volume by Sébastien Gryphe, established in Lyon in the same year, said to be the first Lyonnais book printed in Greek (Cf. Vingtrinier, Histoire de l'imprimerie à Lyon p. 161-62). Printed in 2 columns, this curious little volume features 4 DIFFERENT, newly engraved CHARACTERS: Hebrew, Greek, Roman and Italic. As Renouard points out, "This little volume, which has become very rare, and its fine execution as the first production of a printing house... must be counted among those that distinguished themselves during the course of the XVI° century". Note the printed mention Germ. (germanicus) below Gryphe's name, which subsequently disappears. Title consolidated, copy entirely ruled in red ink. Very good condition. Of great importance and part of the Round Table cycle, it should not be confused with either the compilation by Rustician of Pisa or Girard of Amiens. The text, printed on 2 columns in fine Gothic script, is adorned with numerous rich historiated initials or initials with riddled backgrounds. The recto of the last leaf bears the large Galliot du Pré mark. Copious fragment of 188 leaves (out of 205), with 17 leaves missing, including the title. Circles on several leaves. Numerous handwritten annotations and ex-libris "Petrus Brolliodus" on title with motto "Quid sit numerus". A few minor defects, but a pure copy in its beautifully decorated first binding.

An apparently rare edition from Lyon, unknown in the inventories and bibliographies consulted. It contains comments by Josse Bade and is illustrated with 10 very naive, unsigned RECTANGULAR WOODWORKS. Title in red and black in a wood frame, the last leaf bears Bonnyn's mark on verso. Small gallery on first 3 and last leaf. Leaves 78 and 79 are misplaced. Circles, very worn binding.

Lot 125 - (1529) ALEXIS (Guillaume). LE GRANT BLAZON DES FAUSSES AMOURS. Composed by Brother Guillaume Alexis, religious of Lyre and prior of Bussi. Lyon, Claude Nourry dit le Prince, May 6, 1529. In-16 of 39-1bl. leaves, ochre morocco, triple gilt fillet with small iron in the corners, ornate spine, fillet and thin interior roulette, gilt edges (Koehler). Very rare edition of this facétie first published in 1486. Of all the works in verse written in the last quarter of the 15th century, none was more successful than Grant Blazon. This success is attested by over 25 editions printed between the date of the original and the very beginning of the 17th century. This blazon of false loves is a dialogue between a monk and a gentleman; the latter supports the party of love, of which the monk or author declares himself the opponent: following 10 leaves entitled: "S'ensuyvent les Ditz non notables Et speculez dung très rude engin Tant en veritez quen fables Composez par Maistre Jehan Drouin". Copy in a fine binding by Koehler, from the libraries of Coste (1854, no. 768) and Prince Alexander Galitzine, with his stamp in blue ink. Copy a little short at the head. Spine and edges faded. Paris, Antoine Cousteau, 1529-30 In gothic folio of [4]197 (mal chiffr. 207)-[1] leaves, brown calf, spine ribbed, red edges (18th century binding). First edition of this rare chronicle. The title, printed in red and black, is framed by Galliot du Pré, whose large mark is on the last leaf. The text, embellished with fine lettering and framed in black fillet, features a large woodcut depicting the author offering his book to Louise de Savoie, mother of François 1er, surrounded by prelates and barons in the manner of the compositions attributed to Pérréal; a smaller one shows the reconstruction of Angers. Very fine Gothic edition printed "Pour honnestes personnes Charles de Boigne et Clément Alexandre marchands libraires demeurant à Angiers". Copy with privilege dated December 3, 1529. This rare edition (Latin and Greek) reproduces the text of the 1499 edition and was edited by the Italian humanist Marcello Virgilio (1464-1521). Dioscorides describes the medical properties and uses of minerals, plants and animals. This book contains just over a thousand chapters with the following information: the most common name of the drug, a description of the natural element, the part used as a drug and therapeutic medicine, its properties, the diseases for which the medicine was used including preparation and administration, if any, counterfeits and methods of authenticating the medicine, as well as other uses such as cosmetics, veterinary products... Complete with index (with dated title) by the Italian humanist Ermolao Barbaro (1454-1493). One cover detached and spine missing. Handwritten bookplate on title "Theodori Galli Oeringensis". Lot 128 - (1529?). LE TRAICTE DES EAUX ARTIFICIELLES AVEC LES VERTUS ET PROPRIETEZ DICELLES. No place, name or date. Small gothic in-8, 36 (of 40) leaves with 27 lines, (19th century boards). This collection of medicines based on water mixed with plants, attributed to Jean Himbres, was first printed in Lyon in 1483 and reprinted throughout the 16th century. It is a precious testimony to Renaissance folk medicine. This edition appears to be part of Julien Hubert's production (see D. Hillard); it is decorated with 2 identical woodcuts, one on the title and the second on the verso of the last leaf. The collation of the 1538 edition digitized at the BNF is different. 4 leaves are missing (Bechtel V-80).

"A disciple of Alain de La Roche, Guillaume Pépin (Evreux?-1533), like Jean Nider and Saint Vincent Ferrier, arrived at preaching originalities that found him readers well into the 17th century. It's hardly surprising that Pépin enjoyed great fame. It was said that "Anyone who wants to form a good sermon must take a lesson from Pépin". Uncommon 2-column gothic printing by Nicolas Savetier; the 2 titles are printed in red and black within a vignette frame. Only the second part of this very beautiful Gothic Bible from Lyon, printed on 2 columns and illustrated with 2 LARGE WOODWORKS AND NUMEROUS VIGNETTES, a number of which are repeated. The title, printed in red and black, is remarkably well printed. At the end of the work, we note the presence of small woodcuts and large woodcut initials, certainly by Guilhem II Leroy (material already used in the missal à l'usage de Lyon edited by Claude Davoust for J. Very rare 2-column gothic printing, this is the third edition and the only one bearing the author's name. (the 1st in 1514). "The chronicles of Alain Bouchard, in which are summarized all the fabulous legends connected with the origin of the Bretons, and which, for the period of true history, contain a wealth of information of the highest interest..." (Rothschild). The title is set in a handsome frame by Galliot Du Pré, and the text is decorated with eleven large woodcuts specially engraved for his chronicles, showing the author at his desk, the siege of the Capitol by the Bretons, the seven saints of Brittany, the fight between Arthur and the giant Flolo in Paris, the great arms of Brittany (repeated), the Duke of Brittany and his council (repeated twice), Saint Yves, the battle of Auray and the small arms of Brittany. The lower part of the title has been redone by hand, small stain on the last few leaves. Modern binding in the style of the XVIIth century, on the boards of which a piece of old calf bearing the arms (rubbed) of Nicolas Chevalier, Intendant of Finances of France, who died in 1630, has been mounted (Bechtel, B-274) (Rothschild, n°2339) (USTC, 14469).

Small folio of 45 leaves, emerald half-chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt t. (19th century binding). RARE FIRST EDITION of this highly illustrated early work on perspective, intended for painters, sculptors, goldsmiths, embroiderers, masons and carpenters, making it the first of the "Livre artistique" or Kunstbüchlein. Although generally attributed to Rodler, this work may have been written and illustrated by his patron, Johan II de Spfalfz-Simmern, Count Palatine, whose name appears in the large initials of the 54 paragraphs. The illustration consists of a large woodcut on the title showing craftsmen at work, 57 WOODCUTTING AND DIAGRAMS including 3 small figures, 20 diagrams, (8 with perspectival tracings in red) and 27 remarkable figures, 17 of them full-page. All are monogrammed H.H., which could be Hans von Hunsrück. Light rings, mainly marginal. Scipio's Dream, an encyclopedia of the phenomena of heaven and earth, is one of the most important scientific texts of antiquity. This first edition from the Lyon press of Sébastien Gryphe includes 6 ASTRONOMIC IN-TEXT FIGURES AND THE MAPPEMONDE CELEBRE, first printed in 1493, which shows only 3 continents: Europa, India, Perusta Æthiopia, (the future America referred to only as "incognita"). Remarkable and very rare Gothic printing on 2 columns by Alexandro Paganini. Paganini, who had settled in Salo in 1517, chose the small village of Toscolano, a small port on Lake Garda, to found a lasting settlement (1521-1533). It was here that he made use of those bizarre Gothic characters that belong to him alone. Mattia Ugoni (1445-1535) bishop of Famagusta, Cyprus, describes the incorporation of a general council with its powers and jurisdiction, to discuss papal authority. Third edition of the famous work of military art by the Italian engineer Roberto Valturio. Remarkably illustrated with NUMEROUS woodcuts, including 22 full-page ones "executed with precision and elegance", depicting catapults, cannons, rams, hydraulic constructions... These unusual engravings, depicting the war machines used by the ancients, with picturesque and instructive medieval modifications, are a copy of those illustrating the Verona edition of 1483. The author of these woodcuts, Mercure Jollat, an excellent Parisian engraver, gave them, through the details, a great concern for representation in space; his monogram is found on 3 engravings (p. 191, 298 and 317). Copy dated 1534, with title page refreshed to 1535. They are respectively illustrated with 268 MEDAILLONS, many surrounded by ornamentation, some of which remain blank, and 88 MEDAILLONS for the Elenchus. The illustration is by Hans Weiditz, and the emperor medals end with Frederick III, Maximilian, Charles V and Ferdinand I; the title of the Elenchus is contained within a border depicting scenes from Homer. Jean Huttich, born in Mainz, archaeologist and numismatist, was canon of Saint-Thomes in Strasbourg. A fine copy (USTC, 665202) (Brunet III, 392).

This Swiss edition of Pindar's works contains the Latin translation and explanation of the poems. Cratander's typographical mark appears on the verso of the last leaf. Sannazar (1458-1530) was admitted to the Pontana Academy as Actius Sincerus. The first leaves contain his poem De Partu Virginis, the 5 eglogues are preceded by the title and a preface by P. Manuce Antonio Carloni, to whom Sannazar recommended his works on his deathbed. A false title follows for the elegies and epigrams. This edition is more complete than the previous ones. Spine entirely rebound (USTC, 854667) (Renouard, p. 204).

Gothic folio of [8]-159 leaves, brown calf, cold-stamped boards, ribbed spine (period binding). Title printed in red and black, followed by an epistle in verse: "A très illustre, très noble, très prudente, très redoutée dame, Madame Eléonor, de l'impérialle maison d'Autriche, Royne de France". Jehan Bouchet was born in Poitiers in 1476. In his book, he describes, allegorically and moralistically, the soul's struggle against sin and, in particular, against the temptations of the flesh. He mixes all this, with great frankness of expression, with advice to young girls and women on how to behave in life: there are anatomical descriptions and hygiene recommendations that have more to do with medicine than morality, as well as advice on manners of the time. An attractive copy in contemporary binding. The last three leaves have been repaired in the margins with a few sentences rewritten, and the covers, hinges and corners have been restored. Bouchet supposes that, touched by the sorrows of these lovers, Minerva or Wisdom comes to give them advice that forms the Remèdes contre Folle Amour. Many of these woodcuts are repeated several times. The title, printed in red and black, is set in a frame featuring angels and portraits of saints, one scene depicts the Pope surrounded by cardinals, and another shows Saint Jerome reading and writing with the lion at his feet. Lot 178 - (1537). CORPUS JURIS CANONICI. Lyon, François Fradin for Hugues de La Porte, 1537. 3 parts of 74-[4]-39-[1]-38-[4] leaves, half brown basane (modern binding). Superb edition printed in Gothic type, in red and black in two columns, with the gloss surrounding the text composed in larger type. This collection of canon rights contains the Clementines of Clement V, the Extravagantes of John XXII and the Extravagantes communes, and each part, with separate pagination, begins with a special title bearing Fradin's very fine mark. In the Clementines, a large woodcut shows the author offering his book to Boniface VIII, and on the verso of the title of the second part, the same woodcut is used for the presentation to Clement V. A full-page woodcut for the tree of consanguinity. The first part (Decretals) has not been bound into the copy. The last title is soiled, some leaves restored, rings on the last and first leaves (Baudrier VII, 307-308) (USTC, 200194).

This is the most famous source of Greek geometry, comprising all the fundamentals for the intellectual development of Mankind. Galen's influence on therapeutics was preponderant in pharmacy until the 17th century, and his work on the composition of medicines according to location was widely used as a practical manual by apothecaries. Fine italic printing of the translation by J. Cornarius, German physician and humanist (1500-1558). A good copy. (USTC 147560, 7 copies).

Lot 189 - (1539). JOSEPH (Flavius). DE L'ANTIQUITE JUDAIQUE. Paris, Estienne Caveiller for Jehan Petit, June 4, 1539. In-4° gothic, [10]-250 ill-figured leaves, antique vellum with covers (20th century binding). The 20 books of the Antiquités judaïques are of the utmost importance for archaeology, both for the study of texts and monuments. They are followed in this edition by the Book of the Maccabees, a discourse on the family from which Josephus descended. AFTER THE SACRED CODES, THESE WORKS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT TEXTS OF JUDAISM. The book, by Jehan Petit, with his mark on the title printed in red and black, is illustrated with a large woodcut showing the author in his library. The translation from Greek into Latin by Ruffin d'Aquilée, "nouvellement tournez en vulgaire françoys" is given by Guillaume Michel dit de Tours, who died in 1556. Fine Gothic printing with numerous initials, either pictorial or with a riddled background, red stains on the edges (Bechtel, p. 402) (USTC, 60561).

Lot 190 - (1539). TERENCE. LE GRANT THERENCE EN FRANÇOYS TANT EN RIME QUE EN PROSE NOUVELLEMENT IMPRIME A PARIS. Paris, Guillaume de Bossozel, 1539. Gothic folio of 388 (numbered 389) leaves, brown calf, stamped boards, ribbed spine (period binding). "Livre très plaisant et joyeux contenant diverses sentences des facessies & jeux que jadis est jouez a Romme quon appelloit les comedies". This fine Gothic edition is decorated with a title in a Renaissance porticoed frame, the first illustration depicting an antique theater with seated spectators and those waiting to enter. The other, smaller woodcuts (204 x 137), numbering 307 - FOR 151 DIFFERENT WOODCUTTERS - show figures on stage, in front of an archway with four doors lined with curtains as décor. The woods used for Trechsel's 1493 Lyon edition were re-used. The translations have been attributed to different authors: the prose version, printed in Gothic, is probably by Guillaume Rippe, the rhymed version by Gilles Cybile in round letters. The penultimate leaf (388) is missing. The French translation is printed in gothic type, and the Latin text in round letters. Title page entirely rebound, ff: M8 partially rebound, DD1, DD3, DD4 repaired with little loss of text for the latter 2; ff. DD5 reengraved at bottom without loss of text. Boards and spine rebound. In-folio of [12]-231 leaves, brown basane, ornate ribbed spine (17th century binding). Thomas de Vio, known as Cajetan (1469-1534), was one of the most important theologians of his time. He was appointed cardinal for services rendered to Pope Leo X, and was one of the members of the commission charged with combating the progress of the Lutheran Reformation in the Holy Roman Empire, participating in the drafting of the bull that condemned his writings. Famous framing by Jehan Petit on the title and numerous initials of various sizes in the text. Staining on 2 leaves, binding damaged. Stamp and bookplate. (USTC 147804, 3 copies).

Lyon, Nicolas Petit and Jean Mareschal, 1541. In-folio of [8]-276-[21] leaves, half black basane (20th century binding). Rare edition of Henri Estienne's Bibliorum Opus Sacrosanctum Vulgatis. Its beautiful illustrations include a large woodcut of the creation of the world with Christ standing, drawn by Jean Siber, another of the Annunciation by Hans Sprenkdé and another depicting Solomon by G. Leroy. This is followed by more than 100 woodcuts in text frames, drawn by Guillaume II Le Roy. The title printed in red and black is illustrated with a woodcut of Saint Jerome, set in a large frame. Marginal damage to several leaves with damage to the text, brown stains, marginal repair to leaf 185, wetness on the last few leaves, last leaf missing (USTC, 140121, 9 ex.).

Beautiful book of hours printed in round red and black letters, decorated on each page with various borders featuring flowers, fruit, animals, etc... NINETEEN FULL-PAGE FIGURES adorn the volume; they are particularly remarkable and all, except for one smaller one, come from the workshop of Geoffroy Tory, whose successor Olivier Maillard was. The title of volume one is missing. The title of the second volume has been bound in at the head of the volume. Lot 195 - (1541). FALCON (Aymar). DE EXHILARATIONE ANIMI, quem metus mortis angit et excruciat dialogus cum pius, tum eruditus. Vienne, Macé Bonhomme, 1541. In-8, 292-[4] pages, velin souple (contemporary binding). In 1539, Macé Bonhomme took an active part in the disputes between the masters and journeymen printers, and was one of the fiercest defenders of the rights of master printers. Refusing to abide by certain articles, he closed his workshop in Lyon and moved to Vienne in the Dauphiné. He stayed for 14 months, printing only a few books, before moving back to Lyon. Copy unbound and replaced in antique vellum (USTC, 112014) (Baudrier X, 210).

Lot 196 - (1542). GALIEN. DE LA RAISON DE CURER PAR EVACUATION DE SANG. Oeuvre nouvellement traduict de grec en latin et de latin en françoys. Lyon, Etienne Dolet, 1542. In-12, 63 pages, decorated paper boards, slipcase. (Sun Evrard, 2008). Etienne Dolet, printer, humanist and writer, was condemned to the stake for defending the French language, and in particular the "vulgar language" translation of the Bible. This text was first published by Dolet in 1540, following Paulus d'Egine's Chirurgie. This French translation is by Pierre Tolet (1502-1586), a physician from Lyon and friend of Rabelais. Abundant annotations and passages underlined at the time. Dolet's mark on title and verso of last leaf. Fine condition. (Longeon, Dolet no. 234) (USTC 29569, 11 copies).

First published by Giunta in 1534 with commentaries by Aldobrandini (1500-1558), Florentine jurisconsult and father of Pope Clement VIII. This edition, reprinted several times in the 16th century, was intended for students; it features 22 pictorial bands at the head of the chapters, all visually related to the text, and a large full-page woodcut of the tree of law in the form of a man holding the branches of a tree. Beautifully printed in gothic type in red and black. One leaf stained, a few freckles, slightly unstuck (USTC, 803027, 14 copies) (Not in Renouard).
