A German monk born in Laer (Westphalia) in 1425 and who died in Cologne in 1502, Rolewinck is the author of numerous theological writings. His Fasciculus Temporum is a manual of universal history that enjoyed extreme vogue for half a century; in this edition, historical events extend to 1521. It is illustrated with NUMEROUS CIRCULAR TABLES AND VARIOUS VIEWS, mainly of cities, engraved on wood (Noah's Ark, monsters, mermaids, Venice, Athens, Troy on fire, Jerusalem, Rome...); THESE WOOD ENGRAVINGS ARE THE EARLIEST OF THE GENRE. The last leaf with a little worm work is doubled (lacking the printer's mark?), scattered foxing a small tear without missing (USTC 181884, gives the date 1518).
