Two large volumes in-4° (xxxii, 706 pp // 900 pp), full dark green basane, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets (Modern bindings). A fine copy, despite slight rubbing to the binding. A reference catalog from one of the most important private Hispanic libraries. We have here the reprint made in Barcelona in 1963. [Attached]: the important Maggs. Félicien Rops (1833-1898) attributed to - La nouvelle question d'Orient. Crocodilian almanac. 1856. 40.5x50cm. Original poster, lithograph, not canvas-backed. Condition A-, lower right corner missing. In the present state of our research, we assume that this is the promotional poster for the Almanach de Rops, dedicated to Belgian students, published in 1856, by the Bibliothèque de la Jeunesse musulmane. It should be noted that "crocodilian" was the equivalent of "hypocrite". The book featured 71 xylographic vignettes by Rops. On the poster, a Turk and a European argue over the almanac. The question of the Orient remained unanswered until the 1914 war.

[Illuminated manuscripts]. Rare bibliographical work, that of Les livres d'heures manuscrits de la Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris of 1927 edited by Abbé Leroquais with 2 text volumes, one Supplement plus a folder containing plates. The two text volumes contain descriptions of 313 manuscripts, the Supplement includes recent works acquired up to 1927, and works from the Smith-Lesouëf donation with reproductions of 40 plates, while the fourth volume consists of an album containing 130 plates reproduced in heliotype. All within green hardback binding with double title on the spine. Also in the lot are Illumintaed manuscripts in the British Museum - Miniatures, Borders, and Initials reproduced in gold and colors by George F. Warner in the 1901 London edition in 4 volumes, Catalogo Exposicion de codices miniados espanoles by J. Chased gilt bronze clock. Model depicting Telemachus driving his chariot under the protection of Athena. Ring dial signed "Le Roy Horloger". A drawing of this model signed by the bronze-maker Jean André Reiche is in the Bibliothèque Nationale. The model of this clock case was most probably made by the sculptor Jean Baptiste Boyer (1783-1839). Circa 1805/1810 H. 47 cm - L. 51 cm (Missing spearhead on lictor beam, movement not guaranteed) A similar model is reproduced in the Encyclopédie de la pendule française by Pierre Kjellberg, page 417, reference D.

AN UNKNOWN ALMANAC IN HONOR OF DON QUIXOTE [CERVANTES]. LES AVENTURES DE DON QUICHOTTE adorned with fine engravings. Paris, Marcilly / Caillot, [1804-1805]. Small pamphlet in-16 (5 ff, 20 pp, 24 pp, 45-62 pp, 4 ff) dominoté paper. Copy a little handled. Placed in a richly decorated slipcase with a central lozenge and gilt and polychrome spandrels with various decorative irons. (English registered binding Jan. 13. 1815 N°346. rubbed and a little soiled). A very rare little almanac that we have not found mentioned anywhere, neither in French libraries nor in specialized bibliographies. It is illustrated with a title-frontispiece and twelve previously unpublished engraved figures depicting the novel's best-known episodes. This almanac was probably published in 1805 to celebrate the three-hundredth anniversary of the publication of Don Quixote.

Ouvrage licencieux qui est une sorte d'imitation des Ragionamenti de l'Arétin, et qui est attribué à un certain Hélot, ou Millot, ou selon une réimpression, Milliot. La première édition (1655) ayant été déférée à la justice et l'auteur ayant prudemment pris la fuite, il fut condamné à être pendu en effigie, et son livre à être brûlé au pied de la potence. Contemporary binding. Comprehensive transcript of the debates and testimony at the trial of Prince Louis Napoléon for his attempted uprising of the Strasbourg garrison. Co-accused included Claude-Nicolas Vaudrey and Charles-Denis Parquin. The trial ended in a general acquittal. As for the Prince, Louis-Philippe agreed to let him leave for the United States on November 21, 1836. A rare work. Stamp on title: Bibliothèque de Louis Martin-Carré. Pontarlier.

Nancy, Thomas, 1765. In-4 de iv-82 pp. et un petit feuillet d'errata. Beau frontispice gravé par Collin. Maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs richement orné, titre doré, dentelle dorée en encadrement des plats, aux armes de la famille de Ludres (que l'on retrouve imprimées en page de titre), tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). Décolorations au premier plat, qqs petites rousseurs sinon très bel exemplaire avec une intéressante provenance au vu du contenu. En 1720, Bayon fut érigé en marquisat, Isabelle de Ludres ayant reçu le titre de Marquise donné par le roi de France Louis XIV pour avoir été quelque temps sa maîtresse. En 1757 et jusqu'à la révolution, le marquisat de Bayon appartient à la famille de la Galaizière. Cette subsitution du marquisat de Frolois à celui de Bayon permettait à Antoine-Martin Chaumont de La Galaizière (chancelier de Lorraine de 1737 à 1758, pendant le règne de Stanislas Leszczynski) d'obtenir plus de terres autour de Bayon tandis que les Ludre gagnaient les anciennes terres de Guise, plus rentables. [PROVENANCE] Unpublished letters from Mme de Maintenon and Mme la princesse des Ursins From Adolphe Bossange, Paris, 1826 - A very fine copy of the first edition of this highly interesting correspondence which "throws great light on the intrigues of the end of the reign of Louis XIV and on the general history of this period (Quérard T.V, p448). Louis-Philippe's copy in very fine period bindings signed Sale at the tail of volume 1 and bearing Louis-Philippe's monogram in the first and last boxes of each volume. Tan half calf, spine with 4 raised bands, cold decoration to the central boxes and gilt fillet ornamentation, good condition despite some rubbing, no cracks and corners untouched. Marbled edges. Internally fresh, despite scattered brown spots. A handsome series, complete in all its volumes and in uniform bindings with a fine provenance. In-8, 482p, 448p, 486p, 540p. Provenance: Louis-Philippe with his monogram on the spines of the bindings, the stamp "Bibliothèque du roi" in Neuilly and "Bibliothèque du château d'Eu" bearing his monogram on the title pages of each volume.

Jacqueline Levy Morelle (1921-1986) worked at Atelier 17 with S.W. Hayter as her teacher. She exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris (1965, 1966) and at the Salon d'Automne (1967, 1970, 1971). She has exhibited in Greece, Spain, England, France and Belgium. Her works are in the collections of the Cabinet des estampes in Brussels, the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, the Musée d'Ixelles, etc.

Although this is an automobilia poster for tires, the artist is amused by the comparison between the qualities of tires and academics. We mentioned in the previous entry that Diodorus Siculus, a Greek historian and contemporary of Caesar, spent more than thirty years writing his "Bibliothèque historique". Bibliothèque historique, which consisted of forty books, of which less than twenty have survived, and of which only fragments of the others have survived. These are books XVIII to XX, which have been translated into French by Claude de Seyssel on a Latin version by Jean Lascaris. They are devoted to the history of Alexander's successors since his death iusques a la mort de Demetrius filz du grãd Antigonus. This rather rare edition features a fine architectural title frame with portico, putti, medallions, portraits... and beautiful floral lettering on a screened background. A fine copy despite stained vellum and small wormholes in the lower margin. Provenance: Ferdinand Andreas, Count of Wiser (bookplate).

Incarcerated in autumn 1825 at the Madelonnettes prison, Madame de Campestre, "a famous adventurer" according to Tulard, was probably the first woman to write her memoirs while in prison. Sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment for fraud, she died before the end of her sentence. Her memoirs were published by her son Antenor (Tulard, 266).

These two poems, composed around 1918-1920 and long unpublished, were collected by Aragon in Œuvres poétiques in 1975 as part of the "poèmes écartés de Feu de joie" (t. V). A manuscript had been sent to André Gide (preserved at the Bibliothèque littéraire Jacques Doucet); and Aragon had sent Ciel de lit to Paul Valéry. Let's quote the beginning of Ciel de lit: "The stove sings. "How warm it is tonight! Suddenly a tune comes into my head"... On verso, pencil drawing of a head.

One volume in-8 (462 pp, 1 f), full contemporary vellum. Freckling and ink cross overprint in text margins, stains and soiling. A charming edition that retains its antique appearance. It is illustrated with a large woodcut depicting Ariosto on the title page and a large number of slightly worn woodcuts in the text. The Orlando Furioso is considered to be the inspiration for the Romans de Chevalerie. In chapter VI (Enquête dans la bibliothèque), Cervantes scratches Ariosto, "the Christian poet", whose Spanish translation of Roland Furieux had expunged certain passages deemed licentious. Antique bookplate in ink: D. Clos. Neither Brunet nor Palau mention this late edition.

Jean-Paul SARTRE (1905-1980). Autograph manuscripts for La Mort dans l'âme; 5pages and a half in-4 and 17pages in-fol. in sheets, in flapped linen folder and negro head chagrin slipcase. Drafts for the end of the first part of La Mort dans l'âme, third volume of Les Chemins de la Liberté, published in 1949. In midnight-blue ink on squared sheets of paper, the manuscript shows numerous erasures and corrections, and variants with the printed text. These sheets relate to the final episode of Part One, and correspond to pages 1213 to 1342 of the Œuvres romanesques in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade. In a village, Mathieu and his comrades Clapot, Pinette and Dandieu see the Germans arrive; this episode is inspired by an autobiographical event.

Spring clasp. Marked on the reverse "DEPOSE STERLING". Neck size: 40cm. Pendant dimensions: 6x7.1cm. P. Gross weight: 14.1g. (One stone missing, small cracks in the enamel). Our necklace is closely related to the Arts and Crafts of Great Britain or the Jugendstil of Germany, such as those by Theodor Fahrner or Heinrich Levinger. This is a post-1905 edition of the in-8 edition reported by Henrich (no. 376), published undated in 1875. [CERVANTES SAAVEDRA (Miguel de). Histoire de Don Quichotte. Paris, Garnier Frères, [1915]. One volume in-4°, full polychrome percaline decorated with a plate depicting the tandem Don Quixote and Sancho on the paths of the English Channel. Gilt edges (period binding). Translation by Florian; edition illustrated with eight color hors-texte engravings after drawings by Jules David; woodcut vignettes after drawings by G. Staal. An early twentieth-century edition that still resembles nineteenth-century publications. Palau, 52971 reports only one plate.

Rosewood and satinwood veneered doucine bookcase with rich chased and gilded bronze trim. Gusseted legs, the front ones extending from the rounded uprights. The sides are decorated with inlaid crosspieces. The slightly recessed front opens to reveal three latticed leaves and a row of three drawers in a doucine arrangement. Marble top. Beautiful gilt bronze trim, such as falling satyr masks, keyholes and hinges. Stamped I. DUBOIS. First half of the 18th century. Height : 153 cm - Width : 218 cm - Depth : 45 cm Jacques DUBOIS (1693-1763) received the title of Master in Paris on September 5, 1742. The very Regency form of this armoire bibliothèque can be a little confusing, with the stamp of Jacques DUBOIS, undisputed Master of Rocaille. The stamp may indicate that this piece of furniture was restored by Jacques DUBOIS, as was the case for a Boulle marquetry desk sold at CHRISTIE'S in Paris on November 24, 2024 (lot no. 507). This desk, with its mascarons similar to those on our armoire, would have been restored by the Master.

Ses Mémoires sont, en réalité, l'histoire de Saint Louis, qu'il raconte en témoin quelque peu naïf, mais avec un sens aigu de l'observation.

Two parts in two volumes (10 ff, 611 pp, 5 pp // 8 ff, 649 pp, 7 pp uncounted), full tan calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period bindings), bindings restored. The edges of the first volume are wet. First Spanish edition published abroad (since 1708, the Netherlands were no longer under Spanish rule). This edition, copied from the 1697 edition, is illustrated with the same thirty-two plates (plus two frontispieces) by Boutatts. This must be the first collective edition, containing four Spanish plays and Turcaret. Lesage translated "La traicion busca el castigo" by Don Francisco de Rojas; "Guardar y guardarse" by Lope de Vega under the title "Don Felix de Mendoce"; "No ay amigo para amigo" by Rojas under the title "Le point d'honneur" and "Peor esta que estava" by Calderon de la Barca under the title "D. César Ursin". It's worth noting that Cervantes held his theater in high esteem, and sought to rival these playwrights, especially Lope de Vega. Palau, 136569. With frontispiece portrait of Rapp. "These memoirs open with a fairly detailed portrait of Napoleon ....Then there are solid accounts of Austerlitz, Iena and Essling, and interesting details of the Prince d'Hatzfeld affair, the Staps attack and the divorce. Verso: Combat scene with a mameluk rescuing a child in a mountainous landscape Black pencil and brown wash, signed Théod. Géricault on verso and monogrammed HV on recto (small stains, glued on edges, small reinforcement on a 3 cm tear top left). 20.5 x 30.2 cm Provenance : Former collection of General BRO de COMÈRES, then by descent. The figure of an acrobat preparing a pear tree can be compared to a sketch in the upper right-hand corner of a sheet in the Kunsthaus Zurich (BAZIN, Théodore GÉRICAULT, ed. Bibliothèque des Arts, 1990, tome IV IV, n°1291, repr. p.272). This sketch is part of a sheet of studies executed during the trip to Italy, with sketches of prisoners and horses. The acrobats seem to correspond to the academic exercise of the five dots. The subject of the verso can be compared with the Mamelouk of the Imperial Guard defending a wounded trumpeter (BAZIN, opus quoted above, vol. V, n°1510, repr.), which he later lithographed after his return from Italy.

In-8 [2] ff., 248 pp., [1] f., un plan dépliant (Syracuse), basane racinée, dos lisse richement orné, p. de titre en mar. rouge, filet doré encadrant les plats (reliure de l'époque). Rare édition originale de cette relation du voyage effectué par Vivant Denon en compagnie d'autres peintres, dessinateurs et architectes en Italie du Sud chargés de documenter ce voyage entrepris par l'abbé Saint-Non qui s'inspira du manuscrit de Denon pour son Voyage Pittoresque en 1781, en le réécrivant à sa façon. Cette édition du Voyage en Sicile a probablement été retravaillée en 1785 par Denon lui-même à son retour en France et est beaucoup plus fidèle à l'esprit du voyageur-graveur. Rousseurs sinon bon exemplaire en provenance de la bibliothèque personnelle de LOUIS-PHILIPPE avec le cachet au titre de la Bibliothèque du Roi à Neuilly.

Second edition published in Brussels. This is a very rare edition, but contrary to Rius (10) and Palau (51984), it is not an exact reproduction of the 1607 edition, as the text has been recomposed. Rius erroneously points out: Equivocadamente creyo Navarrete que la edicion de 1608 sirvio de texto para la presente, la cual es copia exacta de la de Bruselas, año 1607! This first part, the only one published at the time, is sometimes joined by the second part from Brussels, published in 1616. Bibliothèque Mazarine, 8° 22315. Ornithologie - ALDROVANDI (Ulisse). - Ornithologia. Bologna, Tebaldius, 1637-1645. 3 vol in-folio, veau moucheté, dos à nerfs richement ornés, roulette dorée sur les coupes. L'illustration se compose de 3 titres-frontispices, de très nombreuses lettrines et de presque 700 gravures sur bois dans le texte dont plus de 400 à pleine page, les autres à mi-page ou à quart de page. Grandes marques de l'imprimeur au verso du dernier feuillet de texte de chaque volume. Nouvelle édition comportant quelques variantes et augmentations par rapport à l'originale de 1599-1603. Premier ouvrage d'Ulysses Aldrovandus complet en 3 volumes et se rattachant aux ""œuvres complètes"" publiées entre 1599 et 1668. L'auteur n'a écrit que les 5 premiers volumes de cette collection ; les autres ont été composés depuis sa mort, et en partie d'après ses manuscrits, par divers auteurs. Ce corps d'histoire naturelle constate l'état de la science au commencement du XVIIe siècle, et sous ce rapport mérite de conserver une place dans les grandes bibliothèques. (Brunet I, 155.) Bel exemplaire dans une reliure à décor d'oiseaux et au chiffre du Dauphin en queue des dos. Quelques restaurations anciennes à la reliure, petit manque de papier sur un feuillet de texte du tome 2 avec perte de quelques lettres.

Very fine romantic bindings in 1/2 bottle-green calf; spines with 5 false nerves underlined by a cold-stamped filleted iron; in the entre-nerfs, large cold-stamped iron with palm decoration; gold decoration at head and tail; titles and tomaisons stamped directly on the 2nd and 5th caisson. Speckled edges. (Rust stain marked on pages 243-244 of volume I). A fine copy. Mention of sixth edition, or rather 6th printing: the original 1825 edition, strictly identical, was also printed by Fain's Imprimerie, Place de l'Odeon. Complete with large folding map entitled "Carte pour servir à l'histoire de Napoléon et de la Grande Armée pendant l'année 1812 dressée sous la direction de M. le Général Comte de Ségur par A.M. ANOTHER CERVANTES FOLLOWER FIELDING (Henry). HISTOIRE DE TOM JONES ou l'Enfant Trouvé, translation from the English by M. D. L. P. Enrichies d'Estampes dessinées par M. Gravelot. London, Jean Nourse, 1750. Four volumes in four volumes in-12 (xi, 336 pp // 344 pp // 282 pp // 341 pp), full tan calf, finely decorated ribbed spines, speckled edges (period binding). A fine copy, despite a few light rings, especially at the head of the first two volumes. Some fine restorations to the binding. First edition of the French translation by M. de La Place. It is illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen hors-texte figures by Gravelot, copper-engraved by Aveline, Chedel, Fessard and Pasquier in the first edition. A very rare work, most often missing from libraries of 18th-century illustrations. Tom Jones is akin to the picaresque novels, and in particular to Don Quixote, to which he refers (his novel History of the adventures of Joseph Andrews was written in the manner of Cervantes). Indeed, chap. III of Book VIII is entitled "Arrival of a barber worthy colleague of that of Bagdad & of that of Don Quixote himself". There are also hints of Rousseau in Tom Jones's "natural goodness of heart", on which Fielding bases his morality. But the confrontation of innocence with the vices and hypocrisy of society is reminiscent of "The Sad Knight". Cohen, col. 394. Ignored by Palau and Brunet.

Jean ROYERE (1902-1981) - Rare herbarium-style bar coffee table, circa 1939. Rectangular frame in cream lacquered oak, decorated with panels of dried flowers fixed under glass and framed by coral lacquered strips, opening with two doors and flaps. It stands on a slightly recessed plinth base. Wear, scratches, paint chips, stains, discolorations and alterations to the dried flowers. H.: 25cm. - L.: 100cm. - D.: 40cm. Provenance: Acquired by Mr. L. (architect and friend of Jean Royère), then by descent. This piece of bar furniture was acquired at the 29th Salon des artistes décorateurs et de la lumière in 1939, the boudoir that Jean Royère presented at the show being a kind of manifesto. This piece of furniture shows that Jean Royère lacked neither humor nor fantasy, and that he rehabilitated ornament as a structural element.
