Havana half-maroquin with corners, gilt fillets, ornate ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Yseux sr. de Thierry-Simier). First edition of the first of three novels in the Les Trois villes cycle. It was followed by Rome in 1896 and Paris in 1898. One of 340 numbered copies on Hollande paper (no. 228). A fine copy, with an article from L'Écho de Paris, April 17, 1908, about Zola's "Grivotte". Brown mark on false title. Leaves slightly browned as always.

Binding (unsigned) by Thierry, brown half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine, gilt head, covers preserved (without spine). Spine a little faded. A very fine copy.

Emile Zola, Mysteries of Marseille. Paris, Charpentier, 1884. In-12, VIII-448p. New edition, one of 50 hollande, no. 18, the only edition of this kind. The original 1867 edition was published in 3 volumes and without large paper. First edition with Zola's preface, dated July 1884. This is the second edition under this title, and the third: in 1873, it was republished under the pseudonym Agrippa and the title Un duel social. This edition appears to be almost as rare as the original, and curiously enough, only copies on hollande can be found, leading one to wonder whether the print run of this edition is not limited to these 50 copies on hollande. Binding unsigned, but from a uniform set by Thierry, successor to Petit-Simier, brown half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine, fillets framing the boxes, gilt head, covers preserved. Spine slightly faded, slight yellowing throughout. A good copy.
