Tapis de selle Chabraque - Central Asia, circa 1800 Red velvet embroidered with gold and silver thread on wadding and sequins, accented with green silk thread, fringed border, Ikat lining. The lower part is decorated with a symmetrical motif of pomegranate and tulip flowers amid leafy arabesques. (Small tears). 135 x 190 cm (at widest) This type of blanket was placed under the saddle, with the flared sides covering the horse's back and sides. They were luxury items, a sign of high social status. Felt chabraques were designed for everyday use, while this one, made of rich fabrics and ornamental elements, was intended for ceremonial use. In this way, the horse's silhouette, and consequently the rider who owned it, was highlighted, proclaiming his rank and wealth. Related work : Musée des Beaux Arts de Lyon, Inv. Kilim aux dromadaires de Gafsa - Southwest Tunisia, early 19th century Large, extremely fine weave of polychrome wools decorated with geometric bands and stylized dromedaries. Condition: wear and small chips. Size: 217 x 232 cm. Gasfa kilims are woven using the dovetail technique, which makes them finer and more supple to handle. Their motifs often incorporate rows of figurative figures and camel trains flanked at the top and bottom by rows of panels and geometric bands (Alastair Hull and Jose Luczyc-Wyhowska, Kilim, The Complete Guide, London, 1993, p. 95). A good example is illustrated by Clive Loveless in Hali 89, November 1996, p.119, which features a train of camels above and below a central row of square decorative panels. Tapis Abadeh - Iran In polychrome wool with tapestry decoration of plants enclosed in a triple floral band. 185 x 122 cm Originally, Abadeh carpets featured a vase motif and relatively dull colors. To renew their motifs, the weavers drew inspiration from the ghashghaï nomads who summer pasture in the region. Leharia - Deux étoffes à turban - India, Rajasthan, early 19th century Two long fabrics, one in fine cotton muslin dyed using the laharia technique, which means "wave", the other in orange silk lampas embroidered with silver threads. Condition: slight chips and tears. Size: 280 x 14 cm and approx. 1040 x 10 cm. The paag (turban) is a symbol of identity, pride and courage in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Some of these turbans feature up to seven colors in a complex pattern of narrow zigzags that differ in size. The rhythmic sequence of zigzagging waves gives a fascinating impression of liveliness and a touch of modernity. Colors and patterns are related to seasons, rituals and ceremonies, as well as moods. Yellow, for example, is the color of spring and happiness. "Leheriya", the zig-zag pattern, represents rain and is worn during the rainy season. Very few turbans have survived. Some wear and tear testify to their frequent use and age. Democratic Republic of the Congo c.1970-80 Measurements: 43 cm high The Kongo kingdom influenced the Yombe, who, at some point in their history, was an integral part of this kingdom. Their statues contain the same themes as the Yombe, maternity figures, seated kings, prestige objects and nail and mirror fetishes. The Phemba statues were used as part of a cult dedicated to female fertility and initiated by a midwife. They depict women in sitting, cross-legged or kneeling postures, with round spiky hairstyles, necklaces of glass or coral beads, a cord tied around the breasts, jewelry and polished teeth. Women are an important symbol of the Kongo, as they are considered a source of nutrition, but they are also seers and guardians of the spirit. Ogboni altar statue, c.1970-80 Yoruba - Ogboni altar statue, Yoruba, Nigeria c.1970-80 Carved wood Height 85 cm The Ogboni society wields considerable religious and political power among the Yoruba. This statue symbolizes the enigma of the maternal principle in the Yoruba universe. The vertical thrust of the figure echoes the songs of praise (Oriki) of the earth goddess hailing her as succulent and upright as the Dundun medicinal bush, it also recalls the righteousness and firmness expected of an Ogboni adept. Mask of the Ntomo Bambara cult, Mali c.1990-2000 - Mask of the Ntomo cult Bambara, Mali c.1990-2000 Measurements: 79cm high Initially, the Ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. The other type has a fluted nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing figure or animal. Ntomo masks with thin mouths emphasize the virtue of silence and the importance of controlling speech. This mask is crowned by four horns that symbolize different human characteristics. They never represent ancestors and are always used by men. The Gba was used at women's funerals during the harvest season. It celebrates beauty and age, they have very refined characteristics. In some Kalabari communities, rectangular plates are transformed by carpentry into a low-relief frontal group in which a commemorated ancestor is flanked by supporting figures.
