'MONKS' BY SOPHANNARITH (BORN 1960) 'MONKS' BY SOPHANNARITH (BORN 1960) Sophannarith Thou, one of Cambodia’s most prestigious artists; born in 1960 and student from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 2000 he was acknowledged as an “Honorable Painter” by the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Gouache on canvas, mounted on a stretcher and framed behind a passepartout. Painted in expressionistic style with three monks dressed in orange-colored monastic robes characteristic for the area, accompanied by a young apprentice, and backed by three large monuments carved as Buddha heads. The lower left signed Sophannarith. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
