'APSARA DANCER' BY SOPHANNARITH (BORN 1960) 'APSARA DANCER' BY SOPHANNARITH (BORN 1960) Sophannarith Thou, one of Cambodia’s most prestigious artists; born in 1960 and student from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 2000 he was acknowledged as an “Honorable Painter” by the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Acryl on canvas, mounted on a stretcher. Painted in an expressive style, depicting a female dancer performing an Apsara dance. Her face with a calm expression, the head surmounted by a tall golden headdress, and wearing a traditional dress including a sampot and adorned in ornate jewelry. The lower left signed Sophannarith. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. Condition: Very good condition. Dimensions: Size 110 x 80 cm Robam Tep Apsara is one of the traditional dances of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia repertoire. Traditionally performed by women who are sewn into tight-fitting dresses and whose graceful, sinuous gestures are codified to narrate classical myths or religious stories. The Apsara dance is one of the national symbols of Cambodia.
