‘CROUCHING TIGER’ BY SOPHANNARITH (BORN 1960) ‘CROUCHING TIGER’ BY SOPHANNARITH (BORN 1960) Sophannarith Thou, one of Cambodia’s most prestigious artists; born in 1960 and student from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 2000 he was acknowledged as an “Honorable Painter” by the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Gilt and ink on canvas, mounted on a stretcher and framed behind a passepartout. Painted with a crouching tiger, its face with a fierce expression, its mouth ajar revealing fangs, and with sharp claws, backed by a golden ground with expressive splashes of black. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
