Franz Hogenberg, World Map Depiction of the earth in the state of knowledge of the time, titled "Typus orbis Terrarum" in the upper part, still inscribed in Latin in the lower part, copper engraving, coloured (probably later), inscribed "Cum privilegio" and "Francifeus Hogenbergus sculpsit" at the lower edge, published by Abraham Ortelius, on the reverse text in Latin and inscribed and dated in lead "Ortelius 1584 Weltkarte", usual centre crease, remains of old mounting on the reverse, dimensions approx. 33.5 x 49.5 cm, sheet dimensions approx. 45.5 x 47.5 cm. Artist's information: painter, engraver and publisher (before 1540 in Mechelen until around 1590 in Cologne), stepfather was the mapmaker Hendrik Terbruggen (Pontanus), refuge in Cologne in 1570 after he was banished due to the religious unrest in the Netherlands.
