Precious and rare inventory drawn up by Jérôme Cardan of his own books, in which he details their contents and draws up several unpublished tables of contents relating to them. Cardan lists all the books that have been published or are ready to be published (not at USTC, nor Baudrier) (Adams C-686). 2 (Bound at head). Collection of short prose biographies by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) on some 180 famous men (Dante, Erasmus, Petrarch), with neo-Latin verse by Italian poets and, in this second edition, a poem for each person by the humanist J. Latomus. (USTC, 401003). Some foxing, a very good copy in its original vellum.

Lyon edition adorned with Giovio's portrait and 138 LARGE EMBLEMATIC FIGURES woodcut by Le Maître à la Capeline, oval-shaped with mottoes embedded in the images, in a floating ribbon. 102 for Giovio and 36 for Symeoni, including the title. One spine split, angular rings. (Brunet III, 583) (Baudrier XI, 348) (USTC, 833256) (Landwher, Romanic, 345).

(1575). GIOVIO (Paolo). ELOGIA VIRORUM BELLICA VIRTUTE ILLUSTRIUM... Basel, Pierre Perna, 1575. In-folio of [8]-391-[14]-2bl. pages, brown calf, ornate ribbed spine (18th century binding). It was this first illustrated edition that really brought to light the treasures gathered in the palace built by the author on the shores of Lake Como. Publisher Pierre Perna had the idea of engraving the most important portraits of the men of war gathered in this museum. The work is illustrated with 128 woodcut PORTRAITS in a variety of large-scale Baroque frames. (10 frames are empty). This edition served as an iconographic source for a very long time, and some of the portraits have remained famous, such as that of Christophe Collomb, which was the most authentic! Other notable portraits include Cortez Barbarossa, Attila... Giovio's portrait is placed at the beginning (USTC, 683306). Bound after the same: - ELOGIA VIRORUM LITERIS ILLUSTRIUM... Basel, Pierre Perna, 1577. [12]-232-[4] poorly numbered pages. Edition illustrated with 62 wood-engraved PORTRAITS, all (except 3) in large, highly varied baroque frames. This edition, showing the greatest men of letters, was to serve as an iconographic source for a very long time. It can be considered," says Baron Pichon, "as a catalog of paintings". Giovio's portrait is placed at the beginning, followed by those of Petrarch, Dante, the Aretinian, Agricola, Savonarola, Macchiavel, Thomas More, Budé...
