Lot 187 - PAZIENZA ANDREA - PATIENCE ANDREA THREE PLATES OF "THE BESTIARY". 1992. MARKER AND INDIA INK ON SQUARED PAPER. Cm 10x10. RAPACE: felt-tip pen on paper 10 x 10 cmMARTIN FISHERMAN : felt-tip pen and India ink on squared paper 18 x 21 cmCUCCIOLO DI CANE LUPO WITH TARTARUGA: felt-tip pen on squared paper 29 x 21 cmAndrea loved animals (but did not like to take care of them, he admitted in a short autobiography) and loved to observe. Flipping through the book we find the plastic tension of felines at rest and before action, the attention to detail of small insects, ducks and more humanized in homage to his beloved Barks. Drawings made for Legambiente's Green Agenda between 1984 and 1987, then exhibited at the Lucca Comics Fair and finally collected in a volume by Editori del Grifo in 1992. Where these plates are documented and published. In the volume the animals are grouped by genre; the earliest works are devoted to felines, for which Pazienza seems to have a predilection.A few strokes are enough and beasts of all kinds appear on the sheet, all very human in characterization and perfect in realization, regardless of whether they were drawn with two lines of a large felt-tip pen or accompanied by the painstaking hatching to which in other cases the author has accustomed us.Silouhette and clear line, plays of shadow and light describe these animals lying limply on branches of gnarled trees or frozen in the shot that impassively marks the fate of the poor prey. Felines then, and quadrupeds, but not only. Monkeys and gorillas, insects, birds and eerie birds of prey complete the picture. These are animals caught in the moment of action or in their natural habitat, but also many pages focused on faces and expressions, tending to anthropomorphize felines and chimpanzees by making human feelings shine through but without distorting their features (except for deliberately humanized images of gorillas in suits or ducks indebted to Carl Barks).
