Lot 3304 - Swimming Pioneers Oversized Photograph (1909) Exceptionally rare vintage pearl-finish 10.75 x 14.5 light-weight photo of over 300 of the most accomplished swimmers of the early 20th century. The photo, which is headed “Records of Swimming, Containing Worlds, Australasian, New South Wales Champions, Other Champions and Faces Well-Known in the Natatorial World, Over 300 Faces in This Group, Complete, December 1909,” boasts an impressive composite of many early swimming pioneers, with the center featuring a large full-length pose of Australian swimmer Bernard Kieran, who tragically died at the age of 19 following an operation to remove his appendix. His caption reads: “Late B. B. Kieran, Present Holder of All World’s Records, From 220 Yards to Mile.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered surface impressions, a horizontal fold to lower portion, edgewear, and creases to upper corners.

Lot 3306 - Stockholm 1912 Olympics Collection of (240) Postcard Photographs, Highlighted by Jim Thorpe and the Debut of Women's Aquatics Rare and impressive collection of 240 vintage postcard photographs offering a comprehensive visual record of the Stockholm 1912 Olympics, all meticulously numbered and arranged in a period leather-bound album, 14.5″ x 15″ x 2.5″, which was presented as a special gift to Swedish diplomat Gerhard Löwen, who served as the Minister Resident in Buenos Aires from 1910 to 1918. Each matte-finish photograph, 5.25 x 3.25 and 3.25 x 5.25, captures a unique image from the historic Stockholm Games, including legendary figures like King Gustaf V and American athlete Jim Thorpe, sundry teams and competitors, moments from the opening ceremony, the medal celebration, and the Swedish Singing Society concert, and many action shots from sporting events like gymnastics, shooting, equestrian, tennis, cycling, football (soccer), aquatics (diving, swimming, water polo), rowing, sailing, and various athletic events like the marathon, shot put, discus, and the pentathlon. As noted, Thorpe appears twice in this collection: at the start of the 1500-meter race in the pentathlon (No. 53) and in a heroic full-length pose as the winner of the pentathlon and the decathlon (No. 90). The album, which is engraved in gilt to the front cover, “Los Juegos Olimpicos De Estocolma 1921,” includes a brad-bound index describing each offered photograph. In very good to fine condition, with wear to the album's spine, and light silvering to the edges of most of the photos.

Lot 3307 - Johnny Weissmuller's Paris 1924 Summer Olympics Trials Certificate from the American Olympic Committee Scarce official ‘first place’ Olympic trials certificate from the American Olympic Committee, one page, 7.75 x 5.75, issued to famed Tarzan actor and Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, which reads: “This certifies that J. Weismuller [sic] was a competitor in the Try-outs at Indianapolis held by the American Olympic Committee to prepare a team to represent the United States of America at the VIII Olympiad - Paris, France, 1924, and won 1st place in 200 M. Free Style Swim.” Signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Robert Means Thompson as president of the AOC and by Frederick Rubien as secretary. In fine condition, with light tape stains to the top corners, and a small area of surface loss below Weissmuller's surname. Eleven swimming events were contested at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, six for men and five for women. The United States team, coached by Bill Bachrach, won 19 of the 33 medals, and nine of the 11 gold medals. Most notably, Johnny Weissmuller won three gold medals, surfing pioneer Duke Kahanamoku won a silver, and the great Warren Kealoha won a gold. Robert Means Thompson was a United States Navy officer, business magnate, and philanthropist (1849-1930) who twice served as president of the American Olympic Association, once for the 1912 Summer Olympics, and again for the 1924 games.

Lot 3308 - Lausanne 1924 Seventh Olympic Congress Bronze Commemorative Medal Scarce commemorative medal issued for the seventh Olympic Congress, which was held in Lausanne in June 1924. Bronze, 51 mm, 56 gm, by Huguenin. The front features a cluster of leaves with wrapped scroll and a central tablet with raised date, “23 Juin 1924,” and the reverse bears an additional branch and leaves with embossed text in French (translated): “The Assembled Nations Celebrate the Thirtieth Anniversary of Renewed Olympism.” Stamped “Bronze” on the edge. The resumption of Olympic Congresses following the First World War took place in Lausanne because, during the war, Pierre de Coubertin had moved the IOC headquarters there for the sake of neutrality. The main objective of the Congress was to complete the work, started in Paris in 1914, on streamlining the expanding Olympic Games program. The Congress decided not to introduce Olympic Winter Games as an independent part of the Olympics but that the host country would be allowed to stage competitions in winter sports under the auspices of the IOC, assuming that the country met adequate landscaping and organizational criteria. France was the first to have the chance to stage an ‘International Winter Sports Week.’ This took place at Chamonix in 1924 and later became officially known as the Ist Olympic Winter Games.

The front features a beautiful raised profile of Marianne, the national symbol of the French Republic, wearing a Phrygian cap, encircled with the text, "Republique Francaise"; the reverse bears laurel branches, a central blank tablet, and raised text, “VIIIe Olympiade, Paris, 1924." Stamped “Bronze” on an edge. The medal bears some slight scuffing. Includes its original maroon paper box, which bears wear to edges and corners.

Lot 3312 - Paavo Nurmi Bronze Commemorative Medal (1925) Scarce circa 1925 ‘Paavo Nurmi’ commemorative medal. Bronze, 54 gm, 51 mm, with the front featuring a profile portrait of Nurmi in relief with raised text, “Suomi, Paavo Nurmi, Finlande,” and his historic one mile record time below, “4 m, 10.4 s”; and the reverse bears a full-length image of the ‘Flying Finn’ in a running pose, with the right side listing several of Nurmi’s world records in raised text. The medal is stamped "Bronze" on the edge.

Lot 3313 - Johnny Weissmuller's 1927 AAU American Record Certificate for '880 Yds. Swim' Rare ‘American Record Certificate’ from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) of the United States, one page, 7.75 x 5.75, issued to famed Tarzan actor and Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Johnny Weissmuller for the following record performance: “880 Yds. Swim (10 m - 22 ⅕ s) Free Style at Honolulu, 8-27-27.” The record certificate was approved and signed by two AAU officials on November 21, 1927. In fine condition. During a swimming career extending from 1920 until he retired at the end of 1928, John Weissmuller broke every world freestyle record from 100 yards to 880 yards. In the days before the fast ‘tumble turn,’ his best 100-yard time of 51 seconds, established in 1927, stood for 16 years (until Alan Ford swam 50.6 seconds in 1943). This certificate represents Weissmuller's world record for the 880 yards, which he made in the 110-yard course at the Honolulu Natatorium in a time of 10 minutes and 22.2 seconds.

Lot 3314 - Amsterdam 1928 Summer Olympics Commemorative Glass Soccer Ball Commemorative glass soccer ball souvenir from the Amsterdam 1928 Summer Olympics, measuring approximately 4.75″ in diameter, imprinted with black text: "Olympiade 1928, Amsterdam." A hole on top allows the piece to be used as a vase. In fine condition, with slight rubbing to the text. The 1928 Olympic soccer tournament represented the last Olympic football tournament before the inception of the FIFA World Cup—a response to the IOC's requirement that players be amateurs—which was held for the first time in 1930.

Lot 3316 - United States and Great Britain 1932 Track and Field Championships Belt Buckle Attractive sterling silver belt buckle produced for the 5th Track and Field Championships between the United States and the British Empire, which was held at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, California, on August 14, 1932, immediately after the conclusion of the Los Angeles 1932 Summer Olympics. The buckle, 2.25″ x 1.5″, features a golden winged foot of Mercury between the American flag and Union Jack in bright red-white-and-blue enamel, with the upper and lower portions bearing a raised globe and text. Includes its original presentation box by Lewis, Inc. In fine condition.

Lot 3317 - Lake Placid 1932-1933 Winter Olympics Bobsled Waiver Button Scarce original waiver button pin issued by the New York State Conservation Department. These buttons were distributed for three winter seasons only: 1930-1931, 1931-1932, and 1932-1933, with this example dating to the final season. They were given to visitors of the Lake Placid Olympic bobsled track, who paid to take rides on the course. The green-and-white pin, 1.75″ in diameter, is numbered as "Bobsled Run, 2687." Bottom edge marked: "Bastian Bros. Rochester, NY." In fine condition, with rust to back. After the close of the Olympic Games in 1932, the ownership of the bobsled run at Mount Van Hoevenberg was transferred from the New York State Olympic Commission to the Conservation Department. Before a passenger could ride, they were required to sign a waiver assuming all responsibility for possible injuries and relinquishing all claims for damages. A waiver button was issued each year from 1933 until the late 1950s, with the number of the button matching the number of the waiver form passengers signed. Admission to the Olympic run started at 10 cents per person, with an additional 50 cents for half-mile rides, and $1 for one-and-a-half-mile rides.

Roosevelt Signed Lake Placid 1932 Winter Olympics Mailing Envelope Rare ‘State of New York, Executive Chamber’ mailing envelope, postmarked at Lake Placid, New York, on January 25, 1932, signed in the upper left in fountain pen by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who, as the governor of New York, opened the 1932 Winter Olympics 10 days later on February 4, 1932. Roosevelt would be elected President of the United States nine months later. Berlin, Germany: Verlag Bernard & Graefe, 1936. Softcover with slipcase, 10.5 x 10.75, 210 pages. Includes three shellac discs with recorded broadcasts of Reichs-Rundfunk, the official Nazi radio station of the Games, covering the main events and competitions. Paul Müller was the head of the Olympic broadcasting station in Berlin, and he was assisted by Friedrich Richter, the editor-in-chief of Olympische Spiele. The discs were made by the well-known company Telefunken. In fine condition, with rubbing and wear to slipcase, which bears sunning to spine.

Lot 3324 - Germany 1936 Summer and Winter Olympics (2) 'Complete' Photo Card Books Uncommon pairing of German-language commemorative photo and card books for the German Olympic Games of 1936: a softcover book entitled ‘Olympic 1936,’ published by Pet Cremer of Dusseldorf-Heerdt, 9.5 x 12.75, approximately 70 pages, featuring detailed full coverage of the Summer and Winter Games held in Berlin and Garmisch, including a complete 144-photo card set of the rarely circulated ‘1936 Pet Cremer Olympia’ issue, which includes rare photos of Jesse Owens and Sonja Henie; and a lace-bound softcover book entitled ‘Die XI. Lot 3326 - Berlin 1936 Summer Olympics (2) Commemorative Medallions Two uncommon commemorative medallions from the Berlin 1936 Summer Olympics: A metal medallion honoring Japan’s victory in the men's marathon event at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games, 302 gm, 102 mm, with the front featuring embossed images of a Kabuki mask, an athlete holding up a wreath in front of the Olympic rings, and a Japanese flag above the letters “NRR,” and the reverse raised text in Japanese. Includes its original presentation case. The marathon was won by Sohn Kee-chung, a Korean athlete competing for Japan. Sohn, who refused to acknowledge the Japanese anthem at the victory ceremony, was the first Korean athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, though the medal remains credited as Japan's first victory in the Olympic marathon. Scarce Böttger porcelain medallion from the Berlin 1936 Summer Games made by Meissen, 114 mm in diameter, with an embossed Olympic Bell on one side and a raised design of the Reichssportfeld on the other, with a crossed swords mark below. Lot 3329 - Berlin 1936 Summer Olympics 'Olympic Village' Plaque - Presented to the Great Britain National Team Impressive metal plaque presented to the Great Britain national team, 3 lbs, 5″ x 7.5″ x 1.5″, with the front bearing engraved German text (translated): “Dedicated to our sports friends from the English Olympic team in memory of the House of Duisburg. Duisburg, October 1936, Mayor.” The upper and bottom sections feature embossed text, “XI Olympic Games, Berlin 1936,” and images of the Olympic rings and Brandenburg Gate. Lot 3334 - London 1948 Summer Olympics Press Identity Card Official ‘Press’ identity card from the London 1948 Summer Olympics, issued to Massachusetts journalist John D. Hanlon by the Organizing Committee for the XIV Olympiad. The ID card, two pages, 3.75 x 5.5, dated July 14, 1948, numbered 12411, features Hanlon’s photo affixed to the front page, and the inner pages filled out in ink with Hanlon’s personal information and affirming his temporary visitor status for the Olympics. In fine condition. Accompanied by a press pass for the Victoria & Albert Museum and an original London transport booklet for the London 1948 Summer Games. Lt. Col. John Douglas Hanlon (1917-1996) was a native of Winchester and a graduate of Winchester High School (class of 1935) who became a member and battalion leader of the 101st Airborne, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, during World War II. He won international recognition in 1947-1948 for redeeming a war-time promise to return sheets sacrificed by the villagers of Hemroulle, Belgium, to camouflage American paratroopers during the Siege of Bastogne. For the town's role in this effort, Winchester received the gift of 10 Stations of the Cross paintings from the mayor of the village of Hemroulle. After the war, Hanlon pursued a career as a newspaperman and columnist, leaving Winchester to take a position with the Providence Journal.

Lot 3351 - Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics Torch Relay Uniform Top and Official Pin Scarce cloth torchbearer uniform top from the torch relay of the Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics. Made by Mizuno, the soft white t-shirt features a patch to center that bears the emblem of the XVIII Olympiad. Includes a stickpin from Tokyo’s 1964 Summer Games, which includes its original paper box. In overall fine condition. The Olympic flame was carried for 51 days by 870 runners for a total of 26,065 kilometers. Designed on the principle of the coal-mine safety lamp, the Tokyo Olympic torch was filled with priming powder and fumigant, a two-component ignition material that needed to be wind and rain-resistant, and which could both easily ignite and extinguish. Its effect was similar to that of a flare, and it proved a safe and reliable instrument over the course of its hemisphere-trotting relay. Although a typhoon and various plane issues caused a one-day delay late in the schedule, the triumphant final relay by Yoshinori Sakai through Tokyo's National Olympic Stadium on October 10, 1964, served as a defining moment for a still-healing postwar Japan.
