Lot 81 - LÉONARD LIMOUSIN (Limoges 1505 - 1577) NOLI ME TANGERE Polychrome enamel, 16.5 x 12.8 cm. Signed 'L.L.' at the end of the inscribed cartouche, upper left PROVENANCE Roman family This splendid and rare masterfully executed copper is among the best production of the Limoges master Léonard Limousin. Probably executed in the 1640s at the time of the production of eighteen plaques concerning 'The Passion of Christ,' influenced on the one hand by the works of Albrecht Dürer and on the other by the great Italian masters of the time such as Primaticcio, Rosso, Giulio Romano, and Andrea Solari. From these he drew his taste for arabesque ornaments and mythological subjects. Limousin was, among the roster of French enamellers active in Limoges, the only one to paint enamels on his own models. Very prolific was the production of this great master during his lifetime, there is talk of about a thousand pieces including decorative objects, calamai enamels, mirrors etc. His works are preserved in the Musée des Beaux-arts in Limoges and the Louvre Museum in Paris CONDITION REPORT No noticeable glaze falls on the surface. Substrate felting evident at the back. The glaze is in good condition.
