Lot 4 - RIQUETTI DE MIRABEAU Victor, marquis, known as "l'Ami des Hommes" (1715- 1789) L.A.S. "Mirabeau" Paris, April 27, 1760, continued May 2. 4 pp. in-4 (creases in 4 and light stain at head, not serious; text incomplete at end). Beautiful and important letter covering many subjects: a critique of the Ferme générale and its farmers, he also discusses the 5th part of his work l'Ami des Hommes and the affair of the Filhol farm... Running out of space, Mirabeau finishes and signs his letter in the top margin of the first page, upside down. He tells his correspondent how pleased he is to see that they have the same way of looking at the duties of lords over their lands "...to consider the very good of the lord in that of the people... I feel very well that the state of the country must be as you depict it to me...". He criticizes the distance of the fermiers généraux from the land; he knows that it is a lot to ask of the fermiers to behave like family fathers, "I very much approve of the general means you conceive"; he evokes his Mirabeau estate and the fermiers généraux' leases... "They are, in a way, entrepreneurs... they only earn money from the sale of foodstuffs". They don't live on site," he says, "and my agent has to pay constant attention both to the upkeep of the furnishings of the fourbaux and to police matters, and the situation has deteriorated over time..." but he continues, "I have not let things get out of hand and have new houses built on the Mirabeau lands, where there is more vacant space..." and he has used most of the income for this. He complains about the Roquelaure farmers and justifies his charitable spending "clothing incurables, some apprenticeships given to orphans... I think, as you do, that it will not be necessary to have a general farm in the future... but to establish large and powerful estates... and to raise the revenue for seigneurial rights in such a way that they are easy to collect. I do not lack the courage to support your views in this respect, but there are two problems to be feared: the first is the devil of exchange which is holding us back... the second is the continual shortage in which we live here, which means that we get all we can from the land...". Then, on the subject of remedies, "I have under press at present part 5 of L'ami des Hommes; this part... will give you new views on cultivation... I am working to found a universal sect and to strike the ears of the government with the noise of the word..." etc. This letter included at least one additional sheet.

Lot 5 - SAINTE-BEUVE Charles-Augustin (1804-1869) 2 L.A.S. (s.l.) October 29, 1858 and July 19, 1866. 2 pp. in-8. A hole in the 1866 letter with missing text. Interesting letter from 1858 "[...] I had read your serious and interesting study. And you have perfectly demonstrated to me the profound differences that separate the two peoples and their political organization, manner and procedure from the outset, - differences [...] that they have spent their lives trying to evade. I remember the country of the former prisoner of Ham, which point in the same direction [...]". Attached is a letter from Villemain to Sainte-Beuve; in July 1866, a very interesting reflection on Marie-Antoinette's letters "[...] These articles form a perfect picture in their contrast. Nothing is forgotten, and you have done well to collect them. On the delicate point you touch upon, I do believe that we have been misled. Why haven't you or I seen the text of these very first letters from the Dauphine, and how can M. d'Hunolstein's text be false from the expert's point of view, if M. Feuillet has a truer and more authentic source, which he is not showing to anyone despite all the exhortations he has received? [...] Underneath it all there is an imposture, and never (despite modern theory) is there an imposture without an impostor. [...] The portrait you painted of Marie-Antoinette survives, and the major parts of it remain completely independent of the petty fraud of a color merchant. [...]" . Sainte-Beuve accused Feuillet de Conches of imposture in connection with the letters and unpublished documents published by Plon in 1865 and the Correspondances inédites de Marie-Antoinette published on the original documents by Vogt d'Hunolstein by Dentu in 1864.

Lot 21 - [Manuscript]. [Persia, Armenia]. ROBIN (Louis). Histoire de l'ambassade faite en Perse par monsieur Fabre et monsieur Michel envoyez extraordinaires pendantans les années 1705, 1706, 1707, 1708 et 1709... [S.l., circa 1720]. Two parts in one volume, in-4, contemporary mottled havana calf, 5-ribbed spine, garnet-red morocco title page, ornate caissons, red edges (defects including faded and rubbed boards, partial splitting of jaws; some browning and rings, not serious). Exceptional unpublished manuscript, most probably autograph, offering a new version of the incredible story of the embassy sent to Persia by Louis XIV. Led by Marseilles merchant and adventurer Jean-Baptiste Fabre, the delegation traveled from 1705 to 1709, encountering an interminable series of setbacks. Fabre's companion, a certain Marie Petit, was blamed for most of these setbacks, whose inappropriate behavior was said to have caused dissension among the embassy members, and difficulties in relations with the rulers of the regions crossed. Fabre died en route, in Yerevan, and the mission was taken over by Pierre Victor Michel, an embassy secretary who had arrived from Constantinople. This manuscript contains the account written by a certain Louis Robin, about whom we know almost nothing, except that he took part in this epic as a surgeon, or doctor. A closer reading of the document may reveal more about him. What is certain is that he is keen to tell his side of the story, and that he is writing against Marie Petit. But that's not the main contribution of this precious text: it describes in great detail the itineraries, the places crossed, and offers first-hand accounts of the populations encountered, "... some particularities concerning the Turks, Arabs, Gezides, Sabis, Maronites and Armenians". The manuscript is entirely in the same hand, which we assume to be that of the author, who signs the introduction. In fine, neat handwriting, it contains a number of erasures and corrections. It consists of [4] leaves (false-title bearing "Anecdotes de lambassade en perse", title, and 3 pages of obverse), then a first part paginated from 1 to 138; [3] blank leaves, [1] leaf bearing the title of the second part, then the text of the second part paginated from 1 to 135, followed by 4 blank leaves. We date it to circa 1720, since in his preface, the author alludes to "Robinson" and adds in a note "c'est un livre imprimé depuis quelques années d'un voyageur anglois", and the first edition of Daniel Defoe's novel appeared in English in 1719 and in French in 1720. A loose leaf, added by a descendant of Louis Robin, stencils the title "Voyage en Perse", accompanied by a note on the author. Also enclosed is an excerpt from a 1715 Amsterdam gazette, in which a paragraph refers to Louis Robin's promised and eagerly-awaited account. Provenance: Édouard Frémy (1843-1904), known as "le comte Frémy", with engraved bookplate and handwritten mention, and by descent. This manuscript was never sold in modern times, and we know of no copies.

Lot 22 - [Manuscript]. HARCOÜET DE LONGEVILLE. Autograph manuscript entitled: "Journal de l'abbé Du Harcoüet, commencé le 1er janvier 1683 terminée le 31 dec. de la même année". 1683. In-12 (h = 15 cm.), contemporary havana calf, 5-ribbed spine with mute, ornate caissons, gilt roulette at edges, marbled edges (defects including uncovered headband, worn corners, 1 f. torn without mq.). Exceptional unpublished autograph diary, documenting aspects of a young abbot's life and activities throughout 1683. [1] f. (with title in another hand), [2] f. (itinerary from Sables d'Olonne to Mont Saint-Michel via Nantes and Vitré), [1] f. blank, [80] f. unencrypted, written on r° and v° (diary proper), [3] f. blank, [9] f. (other itineraries), [8] f. blank. Irregular handwriting with corrections and erasures, but legible. Little is known of this Abbé Harcoüet, apparently known as "De Longeville", who at the time held the Benedictine priory of Longeville, in Talmont, in the diocese of Luçon, near Les Sables d'Olonne. Examination of the text of this precious document should reveal more: for example, on December 3, he notes "this day I was born in Paris rue du Four at 6 a.m. I am 22 years old to this day". We know of two publications by him: the first, published in 1706, "Description des grandes cascades de la maison royale de Saint Cloud", dedicated to the Duc d'Orléans; the second is a curious work published in 1715: "Histoire des personnes qui ont vécu plusieurs siècles et qui ont rajeuni, avec le secret du rajeunissement tiré d'Arnauld de Villeneuve". From January to March, Harcoüet stayed in Paris. The diary contains almost no religious references (with the exception of a few pages about the Jesuits in the Vendée), but reflects the days of what might be considered a "court abbot". He attended mass every day (at the Théâtins, the Jacobins, the Charité, the Cordeliers...), mentioned the notable personalities present, then frequented salons and houses where he lunched, dined and played... the many names mentioned illustrate the breadth of his connections (marquis de Cerfeuil, Mme de Villeneuve, de Bullion, marquise d'Alègre, Ms de Poupilière, comte de Barnage...; on March 2, "went to the fair with Rouillé, the son of the Conseiller d'estat", etc.).). On March 26, he goes to the Louvre and describes the new decor of the King's bedroom. He attends balls, including a masked ball where he meets a charming demoiselle "Denrichemont", "she is of beautiful stature, dances easily, she has infinite spirit [...] I took her back to her carriage assuring her that I would see her again in a short while". He then travels to Jard and Les Sables-d'Olonne, where he stays, sometimes with his mother, until December. Life here was a little less glamorous than in Paris, but he never ceased to move around and socialize with the region's titled people; in particular, he made the acquaintance of a Mlle de Bulière (or Buhière), who was to become his "beautiful mistress"... Seven red wax seals appear on the volume's upper flyleaf, and another at the end, embossed with a handwritten comment: "Sceau de la haute justice du prieuré de Longeville a Mr labbé Du Harcoüet 1680" (Seal of the high justice of the priory of Longeville to Mr labbé Du Harcoüet 1680).

Lot 23 - [Manuscript]. [Gaudriole]. [PIDANSAT DE MAIROBERT]. Factitious collection of light and bantering manuscripts, satires and songs. Fort in-4, contemporary speckled havana calf, 5-rib spine, garnet morocco title page, ornate caissons, gilt coat of arms at tail of spine, triple cold fillet on covers, double gilt fillet at edges, untrimmed (flaws including uncovered headpieces, dull corners). An exceptional collection, most probably composed by Mathieu-François Pidansat de Mairobert (1727-1779), secretary to the Duc de Chartres and Bachaumont, polygraphist, editor of Mémoires secrets, and friend of Rétif de La Bretonne. It comes from his library and is a precious testimony to the literary history of 18th-century France. It comprises 250 items, most of them single-sheet, but many of them multi-page, the earliest dated 1753; written by a variety of hands, some diligently, some in rapid handwriting, some bearing traces of circulation. There are a few "nouvelles à la main", but above all, all kinds of light, satirical, comic and entertaining texts, some with notated music; they are all of the kind that Pidansat de Mairobert liked to circulate in the salons he frequented. Here are a few examples: "Placet à Madame la Marquise de Pompadour"; "L'Hermine, fable", to the same lady; "Chansons sur les avocats"; "Lettre de S.A.R. "etc. The volume bears the arms of Pidansat de Mairobert on the spine - a rare mark unknown to Olivier Hermal and de Roton - and his name in gilded letters on the edge of the upper flyleaf. Following provenances: Alphonse Dubarle (ex-dono by M. Bezout in 1832, handwritten); Robert de Billy (1859-1963), ambassador, close friend of Marcel Proust (bookplate); Daniel Appia (bookplate).

Lot 24 - [Manuscript]. [1st Empire]. [Poland]. Collection of copies of letters from a French soldier in Napoleon's army stationed in Danzig. 1811-1814. In-4 (approx. 17.5 x 15 cm.), 83 unnumbered leaves (+ 1 flyleaf), written in ink on r° and v°, very few erasures or corrections, modest period parchment, smooth muted spine (small snags and a stain on the boards). Precious testimony, almost certainly unpublished, from a French military officer present in Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) at the time of the fall of the Republic of Danzig founded by Napoleon I, and during the siege led by the Russian and Prussian armies against this place. The volume is a collection of copies, almost certainly autographs, of 52 letters addressed by the author to various people between October 17, 1811 and November 11, 1814. He was thus present during the siege, which lasted from January to November 1813, and relates the conditions of his stay and gives many details of the situation. Handwritten note on a flyleaf: "F. Le Baron", possibly the scribe's name, then "Années 1811-1812-1813-1814". The first letter written from Danzig is dated May 19, 1812, and addressed to his parents. On the 21st, he announces his entry "into the quarry", without any illusions: "It's done, the die is cast, Mars is calling me and marching under its stars I shall enter a career whose goal is full of glory, but to which I shall perhaps fail as most of our bravest warriors do". No more apt premonition could be imagined.

Lot 46 - [Savoie]. [Embroidery, sewing]. ÉCRIN DE LA JEUNE FILLE. Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (Savoie), c. 1850, in-folio, large album [37.5 x 38 cm, spine 14 cm] of 2 calligraphied leaves, 44 sample leaves and 6 blank leaves, all mounted on tabs, full black chagrin, decorated with cold and gilt fillets, top cover with title "Écrin de la jeune fille", gilt edges, binding and page restored. A unique and exceptional album featuring numerous miniature models of garments made by young girls, a moving testimony to the needlework that kept them busy during their years at boarding school. It opens with a calligraphic title page: "Hommage de reconnaissance offert à notre digne mère. Les élèves du pensionnat. St-Jean de Maurienne". The second sheet contains a 16-line poem, "À notre digne mère, ses chères enfants" ("To our worthy mother, her dear children"). The models are sewn on fine pink canvas, stretched under strong cardboard mats, most with a calligraphic title. They range from the most basic exercises (darning, stitch, patches) to the most intricate work, including embroidery, lace, tapestry stitch and German stitch. Shirts, aprons, bonnets, stockings and socks, petticoats, dresses, blouses, camisoles and capelines, bed linen, etc. are all produced here in miniature with remarkable skill. Particularly noteworthy are a black dress cinched at the waist with a long blue ribbon, a mantelet of the same fabric, a straw hat with black ribbon; a beautiful complete ensemble in striped satin, sewn with white pearls, comprising a dress, a shirt and a bow; or a "Marie-Antoinette fichu" in red wool. The Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne boarding school, where this album was created, was founded in 1830 by the Congrégation des soeurs de Saint-Joseph. It catered for the town's poor and wealthy girls from the seventh grade upwards. In addition to classical subjects, the program emphasized needlework, as reported by Abbé Truchet, historian of the Congrégation des soeurs de Saint Joseph de Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne: "filet, filet-guipure, crochet, etc.., (S. Truchet, La Congrégation des soeurs de Saint-Joseph de Saint-Jean de Maurienne (Savoie), Currière, 1894).

Lot 54 - [Korea]. [Art and archaeology]. [CHOSEN KOSEKI ZUFU] (in Japanese = Catalogue illustré des vestiges anciens de la Corée = Album of Korean antiquities). Tokyo / Seoul, Palace of the Governor General of Korea, 1915-1935. 14 (of 15) vol. in-folio, numerous plates and explanatory notes, contemporary color illustrated cloth boards, silk cords, gilt edges, embossed and glittered paper lining and endpapers (some bindings with minor defects; volume 6 lacking). First edition in Japanese of this exceptional collection, published by the Japanese authorities during the occupation of Korea. It forms a heritage inventory of Korean antiquities and bears witness to the major excavation and research campaigns launched in the country. Art historian Tadashi Sekino (1868-1935), professor of architecture at Tokyo University, who was sent to Korea at the request of the Japanese authorities to monitor the colonial government's excavations between 1909 and 1914, is sometimes cited as the author of this work, the first volumes of which he edited. The iconography consists of numerous phototype plates - as well as diagrams and topographical maps - sometimes in color, some under captioned serpents, showing sculptures, frescoes, ceramics, relics, silverware and ornamentation present in temples, tombs, tumuli, burial chambers, etc., as well as views of archaeological sites. The first volume opens with a calligraphic title in black and red. The volumes are arranged chronologically according to Korea's major historical periods: the first 5 volumes, published between 1915 and 1917, cover the period preceding the Chinese dynasty, from the Lelang commandery to the Three Kingdoms period, from the 2nd to the 10th century AD. Volumes 6 to 9, published between 1918 and 1929, cover the period of the Koryō kingdom, from the 10th to the 14th century. Finally, volumes 10 to 15, published between 1930 and 1935, cover the Chosōn ou (Yi dynasty) period, from the 14th to the early 20th century. The bindings, each unique, of this deluxe edition reproduce classic Japanese motifs: cherry blossoms, cranes, phoenixes and other animals, clouds and waves, ornamental and vegetal motifs, etc. A very fine set in its original binding. A collector's item found in most major Western, French and Japanese institutions, to which the work was widely distributed free of charge, it is rare to find it on the market. Without the 6th volume (dated 1918, inaugurating the period of the Koryo kingdom). An autograph letter signed in French and Korean, thanking Roger Chambard, French Ambassador to Korea, from Dr. Hee-Bum Park, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce in Seoul, dated March 1, 1968, for his gift of books, is enclosed.

Lot 56 - [Photography]. [Portugal]. EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE de Paris 1878: Portugal. Photographic Album of the Regional Farm-School of Cintra. [Paris, 1878], oblong folio, 30 photographic prints [285 x 205 mm] including 2 panoramic prints, mounted on strong paper and mitered, contemporary red chagrin [Lisboa Company], smooth spine with triple gilt filleting, gilt title with coat of arms of the city of Paris on the front cover, interior lace, gilt edges, binding restored. Album produced for the 1878 Paris World's Fair for the Portugal section: it consists of a set of albumen prints showing the agricultural farm-school of Sintra (formerly Cintra). The "Model Farm" (Quinta exemplar) in Cintra, created in 1862 under the auspices of the Agricultural Institute, was the first school of its kind to be established in Portugal. It was equipped with important and innovative agricultural equipment, such as the adoption of the Fowler steam ploughing system and the centrifugal lifting of water. All livestock species were represented, with wheat and corn the main crops. A theoretical course was taught at the Lisbon Agricultural Institute, followed by a year-long practical course in residence at the farm school, which also boasted a precision instrument workshop and a meteorological observatory. This is most probably the only copy that was presented at the Exhibition (we have found no other for sale or in the library). It is quoted in a study on Portugal published at the time: "The magnificent and voluminous photographic album, exhibited in the Portuguese section, enabled us to study all the views and all the particular details of this model establishment" (J. Lemaire, Le Portugal en 1878, Paris, s.n., 1878, p. 115).

Lot 58 - [Hours on vellum (Châlons-en-Champagne). French and Latin. c. 1512]. In-4, [98] leaves, [sign. a-b 8, c 4, d-i 8, ā 8, ē 8, ī 8, ō 6], goth. car., 30 l. per page, fig.., contemporary brown calf, boards decorated with a lozenge composed of 2 gilt and 3 cold fillets, inscribed in a rectangular frame consisting of a gilt roulette bordered by multiple cold fillets, central medallion and 4 angular gilt full irons, gilt edges, spine with six ribs and fleuronné skilfully renewed in the style of the period, renewed endpapers, corners restored, qq. margins seem washed (superficial rubbing to boards, 2 small holes in margins of first 2 f., small angular spot in margin of f. f3, qq; margins a little browned, qq. few light spots). A very fine copy of this extremely rare edition, of which only three copies are known to exist in public collections: BnF (Paris), Bibl. Ste-Geneviève (Paris), Huntington Library (San Marino, USA). It retains the boards of its unusual period binding. Produced around 1530, and most probably by a Parisian workshop, it features a characteristic 15th-century decoration of a rhombus inscribed within a rectangle, prefiguring the geometric interlacing in vogue in the 1540's. At least one composition of this type is known, produced for the bibliophile Jean Grolier (BnF Rés M 376). The verso of the title page features an almanac running from 1512 to 1530, allowing the edition to be dated; followed by a calendar. The text is mainly in Latin, with some parts in French. The woodcut illustrations include 14 large full-page figures, 8 medium-sized figures and 32 small vignettes throughout the text, as well as the printer's mark on the title. In addition, all the pages of the volume - except those with the 14 figures - are bordered by a frame composed of several woodcuts, sometimes featuring foliage or architectural motifs, but more often figures and scenes. The most remarkable set, covering 34 pages (g6 v° - i 8 r°), is inspired by the iconography of the danse macabre. Collation in accordance with bibliographies. Nevertheless, it is interesting to note some compositional differences with the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève copy described by Lacombe, which should be studied in detail. For example, on our title page, the name "Chalons" appears in print rather than in manuscript, and at the bottom of the same title page is the mark "ch. (in reference to the cahiers destined for this diocese), which Lacombe only mentions on cahiers d to i. Furthermore, on f. ā1, it is clearly written "Sancta trinitas" and not "Sancta irinitas"; also, the table is here on the last leaf (like the Huntington copy, and ends with the same words), and not on f. ē 8 as at Ste-Geneviève. This copy has large margins (approx. 232 x 158 mm.) and has been very carefully restored. All unprinted initials were painted red or blue at the time. (USTC 38074; Renouard/Moreau ICP II, 336; BP16, 101989; Bohatta 78; Lacombe 233).

In-8, (h = approx. 170 mm.) 55-970 p. [i.e. 926], [1] f. (errata) ; 76 p., 4 pl., 19th c. blond calf, spine with 5 raised bands, brown calf title-piece, richly ornamented caissons, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, inner gilt roulette, marbled edges, inside washed (spine detached, upper board detached; tiny wormholes in the head margins of sections C & D; freckles on the first part (p.1-55), and on the large folding map; some ff. a little browned, pale marginal aureole, more extensive on the last part; marginal smudge on corner f. Cc2, without last 2 blank f.). Rare and important third edition, partly original, and the last revised by the author. "This edition differs from all the preceding [...] there are many additions; it may, therefore, be considered the best" (Sabin). It is illustrated with 4 copper-engraved folding maps: - Figure et description de la terre reconnue et habitée par les François en la Floride et audeça". This is one of the very first maps devoted specifically to the present-day regions of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. It illustrates the French Huguenots' attempts to colonize the region between 1562 and 1565. First published in 1612, it appears unaltered in this 1618 edition. - "Figure of the port of Ganabara in Brisil"; I. Millot excudit. Remarkable detailed map of Guanabara Bay, near present-day Rio de Janeiro. Illustrating Villegagnon's expedition, it highlights the strategic importance and defensive features of this natural port during the colonial period, and in the presence of European caravels. - Figure de la Terre Neuve, grande rivière de Canada, et côtes de l'océan en la Nouvelle France", engraved by Ian Swelinc under the direction of I. Millot and after Lescarbot's drawing. This is the first detailed map of Canada, the most accurate of its time, and precedes Champlain's map by three years (it is here in its second corrected state, the first dating from 1609). - Figure du Port Royal en la Nouvelle France", same engraver after the author. Third map of North America in this work, showing the basin of Port Royal, now Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia, with details of its buildings and fortifications. Marc Lescarbot (c. 1570-1641), a lawyer at the Paris Parlement, historian and poet, went to New France, serving with Champlain in 1606 as a member of the founding expedition to Port-Royal. Returning to Europe in 1607, he wrote his Histoire de la Nouvelle-France du Nouveau Monde, first published in 1609. It is the first history of French settlement in Canada. In this, his most complete edition, Lescarbot has added an account of Champlain's voyages from 1608 to 1613 to Québec, the Iroquois river, the Huron country and his expeditions against the Iroquois; to narrate these events, he has used what Champlain told him and what he drew from "Les voyages du sieur de Champlain ..." published in 1613. He has also added an account of Poutrincourt's stay at Port-Royal from 1610 to 1614. The end of the volume contains a collection of odes and poems, "Les muses de la Nouvelle France", preceded by a separate title page with the same address and date, which is not found in all copies. Sign. a-e-i 8, o 4; A-Z 8, Aa-Zz 8, Aaa-Mmm 8; A-D 8, E 6 (of 8; without the last 2 blank f.). Provenance: Vice-Admiral Edmond Jurien de La Gravière (1812-1892), by descent. He is the author of numerous works on the navy, and the son of Pierre Roch Jurien de La Gravière (1772-1849), also a vice-admiral, who took part in the expedition sent in search of La Pérouse under the command of d'Entrecasteaux; in 1794, he took an active part in the battle of Léogâne (Haiti) and Rochambeau, then general-in-chief of the army of Saint-Domingue, praised his services and obtained his appointment as captain. Traces on the title of an old manuscript bookplate from a monastery and an ex-dono dated 1

Lot 75 - [ALCAFORADA (or Alcaforado, Mariana); GUILLERAGUES (Gabriel de)]. Portuguese letters translated into French. A Paris, chez Claude Barbin, 1669. In-12, [3] f. (title, notice to reader), 182 p., 1 f. (privilege), contemporary red morocco, spine with 5 ornate nerves, gilt title, small-iron decorated caissons, triple fillet and small angular fleurons on the boards, all gilt, gilt roulette on the necks and chasses, gilt edges (minor defects including rubbing at the corners and edges of the nerves, worm sting at the tail of one bit; browning, a few stains and traces of dust without seriousness). Very rare first edition of this famous collection, justly appreciated for the literary and emotional quality of the five letters it contains. This moving text is attributed to Mariana Alcaforado, a Franciscan nun from the convent of Beja in Portugal, who is said to have sent these passionate letters to her French lover, the Marquis de Chamilly. The success was prodigious, and numerous editions, counterfeits and other supplements immediately appeared and spread throughout the 18th century. It has also been assumed that these letters were forged by a French writer, Gabriel de Guilleragues, and this opinion seems to have convinced a large number of specialists. Nevertheless, the attribution to the Portuguese nun still finds its defenders today, the latest being the writer Philippe Sollers, who supports this thesis in his preface to one of the most recent editions published. A remarkable copy, ruled in red ink and bound in contemporary red morocco. Height 139 mm. excluding binding. Sign. 3] f. unsigned; A8, B4, etc., N8, O4, P 8. (Gay II, 847-848, "rare"; Barbier, II, 1286. Brunet III, 1030-1031, does not cite any copies sold of this first edition, but only of the second edition).
