Very rare suite of 53 very free, unsigned erotic color engravings whose titles are unknown to Gay, Apollinaire-Fleuret-Perceau and Pia. The title leaf is 2 mm shorter in width, which suggests that the title was added to a suite of 53 free engravings from the late 18th century, and therefore reissued with a new title. This suite includes figures belonging to the 15 free figures engraved after Antoine Borel by Elluin for John Cleland's novel Fanny Hill, the others probably belonging to Thérèse philosophe, Le Portier des Chartreux, Parapilla, l'Arétin français,... works also illustrated by Antoine Borel. The son of a modest officer, Ivan Krylov (1769-1844) began his career in St. Petersburg as a minor civil servant, editing a satirical magazine and attacking the abuses of the time by defending the worsening situation of the serfs. After 1790, political reaction condemned him to silence. He retreated to the provinces, sought protectors and did not reappear in the capital until 1806. From then on, he wrote fables (over two hundred, a third of which were adapted from Aesop, Phèdre and La Fontaine), bringing the genre to classical perfection. They were read in salons and kitchens alike. Written in a popular, flavorful language, they abound in sayings and proverbs created by the author, and denounce hypocrisy, self-importance, prevarication and parasitism.
