In-4, 20.5 x 26 cm, 1 f., 126 pp. modern Bradel paper boards, untrimmed, covers. Uncommon first edition of the first Instruction... illustrated with woodcuts in the text. The first part, on Gallic and ancient architecture, is written by the architect A. Lenoir (1801-1891), the two short chapters on ancient roads, camps and enclosures are by Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) and those on Gallic and ancient objects, as well as the second part, on Paleo-Christian architecture, by the historian and archaeologist Ch. Lenormant (1802-1859), curator of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal and later director of the cabinet des médailles at the Bibliothèque nationale. A good copy. Some leaves uniformly browned, a few freckles.

Identical to the previous issue except for 13 hors-texte plates, including 3 double plates (out of 4), and 7 woodcuts in the text. The city view is missing. Handwritten bookplate at the bottom of the title "Sum Georgii a Werdenstein". (1542-1608), canon of Augsburg, bibliophile and musicologist with one of the largest libraries of his time.
