Double-cased verge pocket watch by Joseph Wöhrle, Friedberg, with the coat of arms of the Counts of Orlow Friedberg, circa 1760. 14k gold and gilt. The outer case finely and lavishly enameled and with a chased and engraved profile depiction of Count Grigori Grigoryevich Orlov (1734 - 1783), the lover of Catherine the Great, with the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle on his chest and an ermine coat over his shoulders; Inner case with elaborately engraved coat of arms of the Counts of Orlow, framed by the dedication "'Au médecin et ami en reconnaissance immuable" (To the doctor and friend in unchanging gratitude). Gilt Champlevé dial with Roman hours and Arabic minute track, blued arrow hands and inscribed with the city of London in the center and signed "Elrhow". Gilt full plate movement with three-arm steel balance under a vegetal bridge in ajour, keywind, chain and fusee and verge escapement. Plate sign. "Elrhöw London". Total weight approx. 61.28 g. D. approx. 43 mm. It is reasonable to assume that this is a late work by the Augsburg-born clockmaker Joseph Wöhrle, who married in 1721 and moved to Friedberg, where he died in 1761. For marketing reasons, many German clockmakers of this time and region marked their movements with a signature spelled backwards and the place name "London" or "Paris". It contains a pair of percussion dueling pistols. Blued octagonal barrels signed on the upper sides "PRELAT A PARIS" and numbered 1 and 2. Finely chased locks decorated with foliage and scrolls and signed by the harquebusier. Finely squared burr amboyna stocks. Complete with all accessories: red copper powder flask with brass measuring spout, rosewood-handled screwdriver for dismantling chimneys, rosewood mallet and tamping rods, bullet mold.... Louis XVIII period circa 1820 TBE. Length of pistols: 39.5 cm.
