ICON of the Virgin of the Sign (or Platytera). Moscow, first third of the 18th century. Two saints on the border. Oklad in silver with a crowned nimbus also in silver. Missing Christ's nimbus, which was probably attached to the two rings at the bottom of the Virgin's nimbus. Tempera on wood. Marks: Moscow (?), 1732 and assayer's initials ? [incomplete strike]. On the back, an inscription in black ink giving the weight of the oklad with its crowned nimbus: 14 Z[olotniki] or 60 g. Dimensions: 16 x 13 cm.

On his right stand Saint Flora and Saint Modestus (Patriarch of Jerusalem), and on his left Saint Blaise (Bishop of Sebaste) and Saint Lavra. Tempera on wood. The board is hollowed out with a kovcheg and has two stiffeners on the back. On the back, inscriptions traced with the point include the number 76, "[to] Martin Ignanov" (recipient of the icon?), the mention of a riza (visible traces of nails) and a basma (frame) as well as other unidentified inscriptions. Stephan Reusse has been developing the "Collaborations" series since the mid-1980s: portraits of prominent personalities from the art scene such as John Baldessari, Joseph Beuys, Jimmie Durham, Rosemarie Trockel, Lawrence Weiner, Nancy Spero and Jeff Koons. Together with the artists portrayed, Reusse conceived the portraits in such a way that they reflect the artistic signature of the respective artist.
