Portrait de Jean Baptiste François de Sade (1701-1767), Comte de Sade, père du Marquis Toile 84,5 x 64 cm Une tradition familiale attribue ce tableau à Jean-Marc NATTIER Provenance: Collection Xavier de Sade (selon une étiquette au revers). Jean Baptiste de Sade, homme politique et libertin, était le père du célèbre écrivain, Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, dit le marquis de Sade. Entreprenant seigneur de Saumane et de Lacoste et coseigneur de Mazan, il quitte le Vaucluse pour la cour, devenant le favori et le confident du Prince de Condé. Il est connu pour avoir été un grand séducteur et un libertin prodigue. De grands noms de la cour se sont entichés de ses charmes, les duchesses de la Trémaille ou de Clermont. Son amour pour les femmes ira jusqu'à séduire la soeur de son confident, Mademoiselle de Charolais. Jean-Baptiste de Sade s'illustre également dans une carrière militaire et politique. D'abord Capitaine des dragons puis aide de camps lors des conquêtes de 1734 et 1735, il est nommé en 1739, lieutenant général des provinces de Bresse, Burgey, Valromey et Gex. Il est intermédiaire pour le compte de la couronne française lors d'une réunion secrète à Londres et il est fait ministre plénipotentiaire auprès de l'électeur de Cologne. Son apothéose politique est vite rattrapée par ses déboires et imprudences envers la maîtresse du roi Louis XV. Vers la fin de sa vie, il abandonne toutes occupations politiques et se retire dans l'abbaye Saint Victor de Marseille, à la recherche d'un apaisement spirituel. Jean Baptiste de Sade est un homme lettré. Il laisse derrière lui plusieurs manuscrits dont des recueils religieux et moraux et des recueils d'anecdotes ainsi qu'un ensemble de correspondances durant les guerres de 1741 à 1746. Collection de Gilbert Lely, 1959; 115 letters or pieces mounted on tabs on sheets of Japon paper, all bound in one volume in-fol. black morocco, framing gilt fillet and gilt Sade coat-of-arms on boards, inner frame with triple gilt fillet, slipcase (Ad. Lavaux). Precious compendium of the Sade collection by Gilbert Lely, the great publisher and biographer of the Marquis de Sade, with 15 letters or manuscripts by the Marquis, and numerous documents concerning him. The poet Gilbert Lely (1904-1985) devoted much of his life to the Marquis de Sade, publishing his Œuvres complètes in 15 volumes (Cercle du Livre précieux, 1962-1964), and a monumental biography, Vie du marquis de Sade (Gallimard, 2 vols., 1952-1957; new revised and expanded edition, Pauvert 1985, and Mercure de France 2004). At the head of the volume, the autograph title is followed by an autograph poem by Gilbert Lely, Songe double, evoking the memory of Sade. In his own hand, Lely has drawn up a table of the documents in this collection (with cross-references to the Gallimard edition of his Life), followed by an analysis and index. We have added to this table below. 1.
