Description

Donatien-Alphonse-François, marquis de SADE. Recueil, Autographes du marquis de Sade, de ses proches, de ses familiers et des personnages épisodiques cités dans son histoire. Collection de Gilbert Lely, 1959; 115 letters or pieces mounted on tabs on sheets of Japon paper, all bound in one volume in-fol. black morocco, framing gilt fillet and gilt Sade coat-of-arms on boards, inner frame with triple gilt fillet, slipcase (Ad. Lavaux). Precious compendium of the Sade collection by Gilbert Lely, the great publisher and biographer of the Marquis de Sade, with 15 letters or manuscripts by the Marquis, and numerous documents concerning him. The poet Gilbert Lely (1904-1985) devoted much of his life to the Marquis de Sade, publishing his Œuvres complètes in 15 volumes (Cercle du Livre précieux, 1962-1964), and a monumental biography, Vie du marquis de Sade (Gallimard, 2 vols., 1952-1957; new revised and expanded edition, Pauvert 1985, and Mercure de France 2004). At the head of the volume, the autograph title is followed by an autograph poem by Gilbert Lely, Songe double, evoking the memory of Sade. In his own hand, Lely has drawn up a table of the documents in this collection (with cross-references to the Gallimard edition of his Life), followed by an analysis and index. We have added to this table below. 1. Bond subscribed in 1599 by Gabrielle de Sade, baronne de Semblançay, vicomtesse de Tours (1529-1576), bearing her signature three times, and as collateral, that of her daughter Charlotte de Beaune, marquise de Noirmoutier. [I, 33]. 2. Seal of Jean-Baptiste de Sade, bishop of Cavaillon (1663-1707). 3. Certificate of nobility for the de Sade family, 1715. 4. Manuscript genealogy. 5.
