A PAINTING DEPICTING EMPEROR SONG DI PRESIDING OVER THE THIRD COURT OF DI YU, 1900s A PAINTING DEPICTING EMPEROR SONG DI PRESIDING OVER THE THIRD COURT OF DI YU, 1900s China, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) – Republic period (1912-1949). Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold paint on paper. Mounted on a silk frame. Depicting King Song Di presiding over the Third Court of Di Yu where he passes judgement on the souls that are brought to his domain. The souls depicted are being tortured by the Hell of the Cauldrons of Oil where they are repeatedly fired in vats of boiling oil and the Hell of Copper Pillars where they are chained to red-hot pillars of copper. Inscriptions: Inscribed to the top, ‘Emperor Song Di’. Provenance: French trade. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and browning of paper. Some creasing, folds, minor losses and tears, stains, and foxing. The frame with wear, tear, and age. Dimensions: Image size 44.5 x 22.9 cm, Size incl. mounting 53.5 x 34 cm
