Mounted on a silk brocade coated paper frame as a hanging scroll. Depicting a young girl herding six donkeys portrayed in a variety of poses. Inscriptions: To the top-left, ‘Huang Zhou written’, one seal ‘Huang Zhou’. Inscribed to the back, ‘Hold the donkey’. With a handwritten French dedication in the bottom right corner. Provenance: French trade. Condition: Good condition with minor wear. Slight browning of paper, water stains, foxing, smudges, and creasing. Dimensions: Image size 66.5 x 43.5 cm, Size incl. frame 174.5 x 53.5 cm Huang Zhou (1925-1997) was born in Hebei Province, China. He was a representative figure of the Chang’An School of Paintings. Huang is most adept at painting figures and animals of Xinjiang Province. After his schooling, he ventured deep into the border areas of China to paint the ethnic minorities there. His animal paintings look extremely lively, especially donkeys and camels. His paintings were often used as a national gift by Chinese leaders for other countries in the world.
