Pair of chairs. Indochina, ca.1920. Teak wood. Mother-of-pearl and bone inlay. Grille seats and back. Measurements: 96 x 44 x 75 cm. A pair of unique teakwood folding chairs with slender, slightly reclining, openwork backs. Mother-of-pearl and bone inlay decorates the uprights and crest, front and back: birds, chrysanthemums, lotuses and elephants, along with a depiction of Shiva on a lotus flower, recall symbolism associated with Hindu mysticism. The seats and the central part of the backrest are made of lattice. Hinduism spread throughout Southeast Asia, permeating the culture of countries such as Indochina, where this furniture originated.
