"Wakasa-nuri" is produced in the vicinity of Obama City, Fukui Prefecture. It is said to have originated in the early Edo period (1603-1868) when a craftsman in the service of the Obama domain (present-day Obama City), which controlled the region near Wakasa Bay, created a design depicting the beautiful depths of the sea. The defining elements of Wakasa lacquerware are the creation of patterns with eggshells, seashells and pine needles and the use of togidashi maki-e, a technique that involves raising the pattern by applying multiple layers of lacquer. It has slight flaws and marks on the base.
