Ɏ A FINE IVORY NETSUKE DEPICTING A BOY ON HOTEI’S SACK, EDO PERIOD Ɏ A FINE IVORY NETSUKE DEPICTING A BOY ON HOTEI’S SACK, EDO PERIOD Unsigned Japan, 18 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Depicting a boy dressed in chinese robes, holding a fan, and reclining atop a very large, tied sack – an allusion to the lucky deity Hotei (in Chinese Budai), the boy with finely crafted facial features. Large, generously excavated himotoshi through the bag. The ivory bearing a honey-yellow patina to the back. LENGTH 3.4 cm Condition: Good condition, appealingly worn, fine age cracks. The top of the hat with a tiny nick. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Ferdinand and Dr. Gudrun Thaler-Szulyovsky, acquired from the above, and thence by descent in the same family. The couple, who had both been practicing law, met in 1967 through their mutual passion for art. Together they built a substantial and diverse art collection over many decades. Trade Certificate: In accordance with new EU regulations that went into effect in January 2022, we have applied for a certificate to sell this item within the EU. We expect the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology to issue the certificate in 4-8 weeks. The item can only be shipped / handed over once the certificate has been issued. This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. It is typically not possible to export such items outside of the EU, including to the UK. Therefore, after this item has the necessary trade certificate, it can only be shipped within the EU or picked up in our gallery in person.
