Sevillian school; circa 1850. "Saint Elizabeth of Hungary". Oil on canvas. It conserves its period frame. Measurements: 112 x 90 cm; 124 x 103 cm (frame). Saint Elisabeth was the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary. She married Ludwig IV of Thuringia and when her husband died in 1227 she decided to lead an ascetic life, dedicating herself to charitable works. She built a hospital for the poor and lepers in Marburg and personally cared for the sick. In 1228 she took the habit of a Franciscan tertiary and became its patron saint. In 1235 she was canonised by Gregory IX. Murillo often depicted the saint surrounded by lepers whom she cured with her own hands.
