Joan nasceu em Barcelona, em 1893, e fez parte das vanguardas artísticas da Espanha no início do século 20. Após uma grave doença, passou um longo período em Montroig, no qual dedicou-se inteiramente à pintura. Sua viagem a Paris pela primeira vez, em 1920, impactou-o com tanta força que não produziu durante toda a estadia por lá - mas o momento foi decisivo pois se envolveu com vanguardas e conheceu Pablo Picasso.No final dos anos 1920 ele manifestou seu ódio em relação às tradições na pintura de cavalete, produzindo colagens e assemblages com materiais diversos. Nos anos 1930 e 1940, sobressai a produção relacionada à Guerra Civil Espanhola e à Segunda Guerra Mundial, - período no qual ele transfere para as telas a violência da Espanha durante a ditadura de Francisco Franco - e também no qual desenvolve predileção pelo estudo da matéria, aproximação que se desenvolverá também no campo da escultura nas duas próximas décadas. Ele mantém sua postura transgressora nos anos 70 e 90, quando produz uma importante coleção de gravuras que desafia os padrões da técnica.
