[NOUVEAU (Germain, under the pseudonym of G.-N. HUMILIS)]. Savoir Aimer. Paris, published by the Amis de l'Auteur under the auspices of the Société des Poètes français, 1904. In-12, 101-[7] pp. red cloth bradel, title page on spine, gilt date on tail, cover and spine preserved (Louis Christy rel.). Covers and spine preserved (Louis Christy binding). Covers slightly rubbed, some small rubs to title page. Missing cut (from the "achevé d'imprimer") at the bottom of the last table leaf. Small handwritten correction to a letter in brown ink on p. 57. Very rare first edition of this important collection by the vagabond poet Germain Nouveau (1851-1920), who was close to Mallarmé, Richepin, the Zutists, Charles Cros, Verlaine and, of course, Rimbaud, whom he accompanied to London and helped to publish Illuminations. Returning to France after a stay in Belgium and travels that took him to Lebanon, among other places, his mental health deteriorated, with several mystical crises. He died in 1920 after years of wandering, including two pilgrimages to Rome and Santiago de Compostela. Germain Nouveau had always opposed the publication of his poems during his lifetime, and it is to the Rosicrucian writer Léonce de Larmandie that we owe the publication of two editions of poems under the pseudonym Humilis: Savoir aimer in 1904 and, in 1910, Les Poèmes d'Humilis (with reproductions of drawings by Auguste Rodin). This edition of Savoir aimer was printed in a limited edition of 200 copies. Germain Nouveau took Léonce de Larmandie to court over the publication, and is said to have destroyed every copy he came across. The Surrealists found in him a precursor, and André Breton devoted a notice to him in the Anthologie de l'humour noir: "The most flexible thought can hardly make one of the twenty-one year old with the sunny voice and mirage eyes who immediately conquers Rimbaud's friendship [....] and the thirty-year-old beggar bent over in the porch of Saint-Sauveur d'Aix, to whom Paul Cézanne, on his way to mass, will beg an ecu every Sunday. Yet absolute non-conformism rules this life from one end to the other."

Lama; South Vietnam, XVIII- XIX centuries. Red lacquered and gilded wood. Attached certificate issued by the specialist Le My Hao. Work exhibited at Highlights Maastricht 2007. Slight wear and tear. Measurements: 55 x 43,5 x 36 cm. Red lacquered wood sculpture representing a seated lama. He also adopts the posture of the lotus flower and performs a mudra that symbolizes that he takes the earth as a witness. It is called Bhumisparsa mudra, or gesture of touching the earth. It alludes to the moment in which Buddha solved the problem of ending suffering when he was under the tree in Bodhi-Gaya. In addition, we can identify numerous lakshana, iconographic symbols that identify Buddha, such as the half-closed eyes, the elongated lobes of the ears allude to the large earrings worn by members of the upper classes in India contemporary to Sakyamuni, and represent the concepts of greatness, nobility and wisdom. The protagonist wears a monastic robe with long folds that fall in a naturalistic way. The facial and body features are very human and, at the same time, individualized, and the attention to detail is extremely high. The ribs are extremely emphasized. He is seated cross-legged, in a meditation posture, his tremendous thinness could be due to a period of fasting, following the vital steps of Buddha. The piece is made from a single block of wood with the technique of lacquering and gilding, very common in the Vietnamese artistic tradition. First, a fairly thick layer of black lacquer was applied, which could then be followed by a thinner layer of red or brown lacquer, over which the gilding was applied. The habit lacquered in brown Attached certificate issued by the specialist Le My Hao. Work exhibited at Highlights Maastricht 2007. Slight wear and tear.
